Two experiments were conducted using corn-soybean diets to study the effect of protein levels and methionine, lysine, and furazolidone supplementations on the performance of SCWL laying hens. In the first experiment hens in floor pens and in cages were fed 12, 13.4, and 16 percent protein diets with and without 25 grams of furazolidone per ton. The results of this experiment indicated that 13.4 percent protein was required for maximum egg production by hens in cages whereas 12 percent protein was adequate under floor pen management conditions. Furazolidone appeared to be most effective in increasing egg production when it was …

This paper presents a study of the helminth endoparasite of the Chinese or ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). The digestive and respiratory tracts of 262 pheasants, all of which were collected in Brown County, South Dakota, were examined. Collections were ,made from January, 1961, through November of the same year. The problem was divided as follows: (1) locating and Identifying the helminth parasites, (2) relating parasitism to the age of the birds, (3) ascertaining the seasonal distribution of the parasites, and (4) determining what gross pathological changes were due to parasitism. The research problem presented herein involved the structural determination of several a,~-unsaturated acids and esters. The solution to this problem was sought in the nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectra of these compounds. The n.m.r. approach to structural problems in organic chemistry has been investigated extensively in the past ten years and it has proven to be an extremely powerful tool for this type of analysis. The data used in the structural determinations are presented in tabulated fo~, and in. the appendix tracings of the original spectra may be found. Plant breeders interested in hybrid sorghum in the past few years have initiated intensive improvement programs whereby two or three generations of breeding stock may be grown each year. To accomplish this, seed must be harvested as early as is possible, dried immediately, and planted within a few weeks after harvest. During routine testing of these freshly harvested and dried seeds, many samples were found which did not give satisfactory germination results. The low germinating samples were checked with a triphenyl tetrazolium chloride solution to determine their potential viability. The tetrazolium test indicated the seed was 100 percent viable. This …

Studies with reserpine thus far have shown its possible beneficial effects for poultry to be due to its hypotensive and tranquilizing properties. In growing turkeys, a decreased mortality rate due to aortic rupture has been reported following the feeding of reserpine. Laying hens under social stress showed little or no improvement in egg production with reserpine, but showed less decline in production during thermal stress. A reduction in mortality has been observed during thermal stress. Broilers have indicated a possible improvement in feed conversion and body weight with reserpine under normal and stress conditions. Heptacovalent bonding, in which seven atoms are bonded to a central atom, is known for substances whose structures conform to three different symmetry types. The IF_7 molecule has pentagonal bypyramidal symmetry; the ZrF_7^(--) ion has the structure of a distorted octahedron; NbF_7^(--) and TaF_7^(--) both have distorted trigonal prism symmetry. An investigation of NbF_7^(--) is reported here; the theory of direct-valence bonding is used to determine the approximate bond strengths and bond angles for the ion. The direct valence method is one of two widely used methods of studying chemical structures, the other being the molecular orbital method. These methods …

The textbooks of soil science, discussing the effect of degree of slope on surface run-off and erosion, mention that the lowest amount of run-off occurs at (0) slope. As the degree of slope increases, the amount of surface run-off and erosion also increases. Different experiments report that an increase in the degree of slope is accompanied by an increase in surface run-off and erosion. However, in one experiment, Duley and Kelly (2) report that the degree of slope has only a slight effect on infiltration of water. Many methods and devices have been utilized in the automatic control of temperature. However, the accuracy requirement of a temperature controlling device depends upon its use. The purpose of this work was to design a device to obtain accuracy of control to the extent of better than one tenth of a degree centigrade of deviation of the specified temperature. In this study, an attempt was made to understand the type and amounts of metastable intermediates formed when perfluoropropane was placed under electrical stress by adding small amoutns of organic compounds such as thiophene, isopropyl mercaptan, ethyl methyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, carbon disulfide, and nitrobenzene. The sulfur compounds were chose because fluorine was reported to react with thiophene to form sulfur hexafluoride. It was thought that if fluorine were formed from perfluorocarbons in the corona, it might be advantageous to remove this metastable species. In recent years, electronic instrumentation has been employed as a means of measuring physiological phenomena. One use of this instrumentation is the location of small radio transmitters within animals. The most common method of transmitting temperature data is by varying the carrier frequency of a small temperature sensitive oscillator located within the animal and recording the change of this frequency at the receiver; however, this system has some disadvantages. College instructors of freshman English commonly acknowledge the existence of problems in teaching composition, many of which stem from two causes: the inadequate preparation in composition of entering freshmen, and the increasing size of college English classes. A four-credit basic speech course as a required part of the core curriculum at South Dakota State College became effective at the May 25, 1960, faculty meeting. Those members of the Ad Hoc committee studying communication had received from the Speech Department a recommendation that the department be allowed to explore the adoption of a procedure by which “students of exceptional ability in speech be excused from the basic speech course if suitable measuring instruments and a feasible plan can be developed by the speech department.” The committee verbally approved and encouraged that recommendation. It has been repeatedly verified that selenium, when fed as sodium selenite or sodium selenite, or injected intravenously or intraperitoneally, is chemically bound to the protein in various tissues. Further, it has been shown that selenium can be incorporated into protein in such organisms as yeast and bacteria, or even more complex organisms such as rats, dogs, and mice. Special attention is given to tracing objectives of the newspapers, the available advertiser ship, journalistic offerings in high schools, staff selection, trends in production, and finance of the publication. The original range of the eastern wild turkey included part of South Dakota. However, they disappeared from the state by 1920 and were not reintroduced until 1948. Up until this point, little work has been done concerning the macroscopic endoparasites of wild turkeys in any region, and no work of this nature has been undertaken in South Dakota. Therefore, the South Dakota Department of Game, fish, and parks entered into a cooperative arrangement with South Dakota State College to determine the incidence and distribution of helminths in wild turkeys of western South Dakota.
