One of the most significant and challenging problems now facing many state school systems is that of reorganizing the school districts into larger and more efficient local school administrative units. Leading educators have recognized the need for reorganization of school districts into larger administrative units. Although some school district reorganization plans have been passed by state legislatures during the past few years, reorganization has made relatively slow progress. In this study of disturbed and maladjusted Indian children, the author hoped to show that there is a need for more knowledge in this field, that there is an increase in the number of emotionally upset Indian children, and that the socio-economic structure of the home area is a contributing factor in the problem. The results of a questionnaire showed that other workers with Indian youth did indeed feel that there are a large number of disturbed and maladjusted Indian children in many areas where Indian citizens comprise a high percentage of the general population such as many areas in …

A Study Of Whiteness Retention Of Selected White Fabrics Using Hard And Softened Water With Various Laundry Products, Marion Leach Kamstra

Four nearly white fabrics were chosen for a laundering study of the retention of original whiteness by certain fibers using methods simulating hand laundry. A cotton fabric was selected as the control and the experimental fabrics were made of Dacron, nylon, and a 65-35 percent blend of Dacron and cotton. Methods were planned so as to assure a uniform treatment of each sample. White washing products, recommended as appropriate for this type of work, were chosen for this study. Nine samples were cut from each fabric. One was retained as the original sample and the remaining eight were washed. Four …

The first objective of this study was to determine the degree of acceptance of the phototypesetting process among commercial publishers by comparing this process to the hot-metal and cold-type processes. Two immediate factors that would seemingly affect this acceptance would be the size of the publisher and whether or not the publisher operated his own composing room. The second objective was to determine to what degree acceptance of phototypesetting was influenced by the size of the publisher. A three-part study of the background and preparation in English of selected students at South Dakota State College was conducted. The purpose was to discover and analyze significant differences in the home environment of top-ranking students and bottom-ranking students in English. The home environments of 42 top-tanking and 42 bottom-ranking students of English were studied by means of home interviews to determine variables which might contribute to the student’s success or failure in college English. The Effect Of A Prescribed Pre-Season Weight-Training Program Upon A Select Group Of Varsity Baseball Candidates, Philip Elliot Trooien

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of six-week weight-training program on the running, hitting, and throwing skills of baseball. Six exercises were sued in the program, and a plan of ten executions of each exercise was utilized. An experimental group of fifteen varsity baseball candidates at South Dakota State College participated in the weight-training program during the winter quarter of 1961. Training sessions for this weight-training program were held three times per week, for six weeks. An attempt was made to maintain a training schedule in which training periods were not held two days in succession. …

The purpose of this study is to attempt to determine in what degree 10 of the nation’s “best” newspapers met their responsibility to spread knowledge deeply in their coverage of a leading story in Newburgh, NY. Newburgh’s city manager and council attempted to implement a 13-point welfare program that would require welfare recipients to collect their checks at a police station amongst other mandates. Critics argued that this unfairly targeted the black minority. One must question how responsible was press coverage of the Newburgh welfare story? An interest in devising a rating scale for determining the attitudes of printers toward the printing industry, and a conviction that such a scale would be of great value to the industry for rating employee attitudes and to schools of printing for rating student attitudes have led to the undertaking of this thesis. Soils are the product of the interaction of five main factors – climate, parent material, relief, time, and the biosphere. One of the ways fundamental differences between soils may be recognized is by the nature of the suite of clay minerals that characterize soils. The basic purposes of this study were to characterize the clay mineral composition of two selected soils of eastern South Dakota and thereby to reveal whether difference exist between clay mineral complexes in soils which are similar in all respects except the age of the parent material. Although much of the work concerning anion uptake by yeast has been done with cake yeast, the majority of the studies reported in this thesis were performed using a pure culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Two media are described which produce a sufficient number of yeast cells possessing good phosphate and selenite uptake properties. A study of the relative rates of the uptake of phosphate, selenite, selenate, and sulfate shows phosphate anions to be absorbed at a much faster rate than others. Thirty minutes after its addition, selenite appeared to be inhibitory to the cells. Selenate was also inhibitory to the …

This study should be helpful in suggesting various ways in which commercial printers in the general area of the plants studied might review their businesses by comparing cost figures, ratios, and profit margins wit firms in other states. From a thorough study of the material gathered from each plant, and by comparing costs and dollar volume, areas hitherto vaguely noticed as “leaks” in profit margin may be studied, and corrective measures taken. The main purpose of this thesis is to try to give prospective weekly publishers some insight into the skills needed for one form of journalism, the weekly newspaper publishing business. The author will provide information about the educational backgrounds and practical experiences of 107 South Dakota weekly publishers. An attempt will be made to learn what has helped these publishers become successful journalists. The backgrounds of the state’s current weekly publishers will be analyzed to determine the extent of their formal educations and practical journalistic experiences.
