High-quality forage is essential in feeding dairy cattle if dairymen intend to increase milk production or to maintain a high level of production. Problems of preserving high-quality forage for the winter feeding of livestock occur each year. The preservation of legumes and grasses as hay is governed by a number of factors: (1) curing weather, (2) state of maturity of the crops, and (3) other factors such as equipment available and methods of handling the crop. The inability of dairymen to control these factors results in heavy nutrient loses in the hays during the curing process due primarily to leaching …

Fishery waters overpopulated with desirable species generally produce few harvestable fish because of slow growth rates. In 1962 Bennett stated that no fish of harvestable were found in some waters thus affected. Eschmeyer (1936) made a similar observation concerning overcrowded populations of yellow perch (Perca flavescens). For lack of more efficient remedial measures the use of piscicides has been recommended to reduce the numbers the numbers of the problem species. Relatively low toxaphene concentrations in two North Dakota lakes substantially reduced the density of the yellow perch population the effect on other fish species was less obvious. An improvement in the quality of beef and in production methods will raise the living standards of both the rancher and consumer. Raising quality can be best accomplished by selecting breeding stock which foster desirable qualities in their offspring in proportion to the economic value of that particular characteristic. Excessive amounts of time and space required for water requirement measurements on individual genotypes indicate the need for a more practical method than that of direct selection for efficient water use by crop plants. The feasibility of using an indirect method of selection for this trait was examined in this study. Relative water requirements of eight oat verities, representing a wide range of adaptation, were determined. The relationship between water requirement and several commonly selected plant characters was also studied, to determine if changes in these characters could be expected to produce changes in water-use efficiency. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a rebound tumbling program on body weight, body measurements, adipose tissue, leg strength, explosive power of the legs, and the endurance of college women. During a 12 week period, 39 girls participated in the rebound tumbling unit. Each girl spent a total of three hours on the trampoline during this 12 week period. Results of the initial and final tests should that there was significant gain in body weight. There was a significant loss in the girth of the right arm, waist, right thigh, left thigh, and hips. In the North Central Region, Phoma herbarum var. medicaginis Rab. And Cercospora zebrine Pass. Cause more damage to alfalfa than other components of the blackstem complex. The objectives of this investigation were: (1) to determine the ecological relationship between the two pathogens, and (2) to obtain some information regarding the genetic systems in alfalfa which condition the reaction to the two fungi. A diallel set was established from eight diploid, heterozygous clones of alfalfa. One P. herbarum and two C. zebrine isolates were used. The purpose of this study was to compare the physical fitness of the Cerro Gordo, Illinois, Public School students with national norms and with that of students in other areas. The study was limited to students grades five through twelve in Cerro Gordo Public Schools. The Kraus-Weber Test was administered to 434 children and the AAHPER Test to 378 children. The results were analyzed by standard statistical procedures. The following conclusions are based upon data obtained from this study. Only 19.3 percent of students taking the Kraus-Weber Test failed one or more test items, which is a lower percentage compared …

This thesis concerns the investigation of an actual steel folded plate roof and the resulting analysis. At the present stage of development, it appears that the folded plate could be used to form the roof system of many buildings at a savings of about 30% in weight of the steel when compared with standard bar joist construction. Speed of erection appears to favor the folded plate also, since the only welds required in the field are at the ends and along the lower fold line. This study, following a Social Psychological approach to the study of human behavior, as attempted to (1) develop an objective instrument for identifying “significant others” and (2) present some evidence concerning the validity and reliability of this measuring instrument. Attention is focused especially on the adolescent pattern of “significant others” relations emphasizing the role of parents as “significant others.” A sociometric technique, being both objective and flexible has been used in this study. This study was conducted to investigate the use of college students’ self-estimates of scholastic ability in the prediction of academic success. The objectives of the research involved the analysis of grade achievement and drop-out percentage of students who estimated their abilities accurately as compared with those who made inaccurate estimates of their abilities. This research indicates that students cannot or do not wish to register accurate estimations of their scholastic ability on a rating scale. The more able student tends to underestimate his potential, the lesser able student to consistently overestimate his ability. The majority of the group estimated their …

A mathematical model based on the diffusion theory of gases was developed to account for the oxygen status of a moist soil. The theoretical development has its basis in the differential equation for diffusion which has been modified in include the oxygen consumption factor or activity of the soil. Solutions of the modified equation were obtained for the case where (1) the activity factor was a constant over a given time interval, and (2) the activity factor varied with time. A means for expressing the activity factor mathematically when it occurs as a complicated function of time has been proposed. …
