An Adaptive Redundancy Reduction Technique, Seon J. Chung Jan 1970

An Adaptive Redundancy Reduction Technique, Seon J. Chung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In telemetry systems, the limited power available from the RF transmitter imposes a constraint on the data transmission rate. For example, a spacecraft’s ability to communicate with a ground receiving station decreases with the square of the distance, and electrical power to operate the system increases with the data transmission rate. To solve this problem, considerable attention has been devoted toward improving the efficiency of telemetry systems by selecting advantageous coding, modulation and reconstruction techniques. One technique which is used to achieve this goal is to design a telemetry system which transmits only the significant information contained in the source …

The Military Image In The Poetry Of A. E. Housman, Richard Alan Hudson Jan 1970

The Military Image In The Poetry Of A. E. Housman, Richard Alan Hudson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the military image in the poems of A. E. Housman. The first section is a brief biographical sketch which stresses those incidents of Housman's life that most influenced his personality and poetry. Section two is an introduction to Housman's association and contact with the military and points out influences on his military poems. Section three analyzes those military poems which have autobiographical significance for the author. The fourth section is an explanation of Housman's belief that the military life is the best possible life; it also analyzes the virtues and value system of the soldier. The final …

Studies Of High Level Copper Supplementation To Rations For Growing-Finishing Swine, Larry Wayne De Goey Jan 1970

Studies Of High Level Copper Supplementation To Rations For Growing-Finishing Swine, Larry Wayne De Goey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scientists are continually searching for new compounds, as well as optimum levels and combinations of existing compounds, in order to improve gain and feed efficiency of pigs fed common swine rations without adversely affecting the quality of the pork produced. Feed efficiency is of particular importance to a profitable swine enterprise since feed costs make up approximately 65% of total production costs. During the last two decades there has been considerable interest in the ability of copper to increase gains and feed efficiency when fed at high levels in swine rations. Several reports have indicated that copper is an effective …

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Overt And Covert Responses On The Retention Of Programed Material, Gary Merriam Jan 1970

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Overt And Covert Responses On The Retention Of Programed Material, Gary Merriam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to help in the resolution of some of these questions by determining if the type of response made to programed material has any effect on the retention of the material. If, as was mentioned earlier, learning is the result of stimuli transmitted through the senses to the brain, it seems logical that the more senses involved in transmitting the stimuli to the brain the more effective and efficient the learning process will be. It is the hypothesis of this study that a person responding to programed material by having to think what the …

Light And Color Responses Of Apterous Cereal Aphids, Eugene Leslie Miller Jan 1970

Light And Color Responses Of Apterous Cereal Aphids, Eugene Leslie Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The four species of cereal aphids used in this study were the English grain aphid, Macrosiphum avenae (Fab.), the oat bird-cherry aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and the corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch). Aphid colonies were maintained on barley CI 666 in the greenhouse. Only active adult apterae from the stock colonies were counted into the cages. All tests were run in Percival or Sherer controlled environment chambers operating from 2O°C to 27°C, and with a photoperiod of 16 hours of light (3,000 Ft-c supplied by fluorescent and incandescent bulbs). The complex synthetic diet used in …

The "Republic Of The Spirit" : Marital Love In Edith Wharton's The House Of Mirth, The Custom Of The Country, And The Age Of Innocence, Nancy Lee Preszler Jan 1970

The "Republic Of The Spirit" : Marital Love In Edith Wharton's The House Of Mirth, The Custom Of The Country, And The Age Of Innocence, Nancy Lee Preszler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Edith Wharton's concern with the institution of marriage was both a personal and an artistic one. Her own marriage ended in divorce after many years of trying to nurse her husband through repeated attacks or mental illness. This marriage, not the ideal as far as Mrs. Wharton was concerned, was one of companionship but one lacking spiritual and intellectual satisfaction. The attitude which Mrs.Wharton gradually developed toward her own marriage and its failure is apparent in her fiction. This thesis has analyzed Edith Wharton's three major society novels, The House Mirth, The Custom of the Country, and The Age of …

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Sdsu River Basin Model, Kunjipalu Thoppil Jan 1970

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Sdsu River Basin Model, Kunjipalu Thoppil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The demand for water has increased continually in all parts of the world while the quantity available is essentially unchanged. Further, the projected increase in demand for different categories of use, particularly municipal consumption, manufacturing, mining and power generation will lead o a water shortage in the future. For example, by the year 2000 the effluent of municipal swage plants is expected in industrial wastes. The average annual streamflow that discharges into the ocean from the continental United States is essentially fixed and amounts to 1100 billion gallons of water per day. It is estimated that by the year 2000 …

Changes In The Physical Status Of High School Wrestlers : Brought About By Deconditioning, Lloyd D. Wilson Jan 1970

Changes In The Physical Status Of High School Wrestlers : Brought About By Deconditioning, Lloyd D. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wrestling coaches and participants are in agreement that good physical conditioning is a prerequisite for success in the sport of wrestling. Each wrestler must work many long hours, during the season, to reach the high level of physical efficiency demand by state tournament competition. There is a tendency on the part of most wrestlers, upon completion of the state tournament competition, not to engage in spring sports. Therefore, the training to maintain the high level of physical efficiency abruptly causes and onset of deconditioning follows. Since many wrestlers do not compete in spring sports, and since their physical condition deteriorates …
