Analysis Of The Flow Variation Of The Big Sioux River, Kerwin Luther Rakness
Analysis Of The Flow Variation Of The Big Sioux River, Kerwin Luther Rakness
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main objectives of this study were to determine the flow variation of the Big Sioux River throughout the year, and to estimate the probable effects of increased water resources development on this flow. Flow-duration tables were prepared for six different flow-gaging stations located on the Big Sioux River and one station located on the Skunk Creek tributary. These tables were prepared for periods of one third of a month throughout the year. The mean or average flows for these time periods were also determined. It should be emphasized that the conclusions drawn from this investigation are based on the …

Factors Influencing Asexual Spore Formation By Ceratocystis Ulmi, Richard J. Roster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stock cultures of a pure strain of C. ulmi were obtained from the Plant Science Department at South Dakota State University. The inoculum was maintained on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) in petri dishes. On this medium, the fungus produced a grayish white rather sparse and appressed mycelium. Conidia were produced in heads on branched conidiophores. Quite often some sectoring was observed on PDA. Cultures producing coremia, obtained on 2% American elm shavings (on dry weight basis) plus bacteriological agar (8 g/1), were also used as an inoculum source. As is shown, this medium produced coremia and very little vegetative mycelium. …

Voltage (60 Hz) Breakdown Strength Vs. Temperature Of Octafluoropropane (C₃F₈) Gas Exposed To Uniform And Non-Uniform Electric Fields, Edward J. Roman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gaseous insulation is at least as old as air itself. In the early days of the electrical industry air was depended upon extensively as an insulating medium. Air, in fact, is not too bad as an insulator and today it is still used for this purpose. Air is noninflammable, nonexplosive, plentiful and it has good dielectric characteristics. Over the years, however, there was a need for insulating mediums which had higher dielectric strength than air. Solid and liquid insulating mediums gained wide use because of the higher dielectric strengths. However, solid and liquid insulating mediums possessed some undesirable characteristics. Solids …
Demonstration Of Glutamate Dehydrogenase In Azotobacter Vinelandii, Jack A. Turner
Demonstration Of Glutamate Dehydrogenase In Azotobacter Vinelandii, Jack A. Turner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the early part of this century it was observed that certain microorganisms could grow in the absence of fixed nitrogen. Since those early observations there has been an intensive effort to unravel the mystery behind the physiology of nitrogen fixation. It was not until development of the use of heavy isotopes that we begin to learn the mechanism of biological nitrogen fixation. It was the object of this study to determine if glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) was present in A. vinelandii when it was fixing nitrogen. If it is assumed that GDH is the principal means of assimilation of NH+4 …
Optimum Design Of Transversely Loaded Concrete Beam, Sheng Lung Tsai
Optimum Design Of Transversely Loaded Concrete Beam, Sheng Lung Tsai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
American agriculure has advanced considerably in recent years. These unprecedented advances result primarily from recent developments which have occurred in agriculture science and technology. Recent trends have been toward the feeding of more animals on fewer feedlots. The concentrating of large numbers of animals has undoubtedly increased the efficiency of animal producion in certain parts of the country. But the confinement of large numbers of animals has undoubtedly increased the efficiency of animal production in certain parts of the country. Because waste management has become a major operational problem, improved methods of handling, treatment, and disposal of animal wastes must …

Student Instruction Manual For Black And White Film Processing And Printing, Stephen Michael Delay
Student Instruction Manual For Black And White Film Processing And Printing, Stephen Michael Delay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For most subject matter the ideal classroom situation would allow a one-to-one relationship between instructor and student. In teaching basic photography this is especially true because of the great number of steps involved in producing a finished photograph and because each step must be done correctly to achieve good results. Time won't permit the instructor to effectively follow each student through all the steps involved, and, ideally the student should be allowed to work at his or her own speed. The one-to-one relationship therefore, isn't possible in most photography classes and, for that reason, something is needed to take the …
The Effect Of Harvesting And Storage Methods On Chemical Composition And In Vitro Digestibility Of First Cutting Alfalfa Hay, Perry A. Fales
The Effect Of Harvesting And Storage Methods On Chemical Composition And In Vitro Digestibility Of First Cutting Alfalfa Hay, Perry A. Fales
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The importance of alfalfa hay in dairy cattle feeding is generally acknowledged. The reasons why alfalfa is used so extensively in dairy cattle rations are due to its high protein content, high acceptability by cattle, its wide ·area of adaptation, and high yields. A popular way of handling the forage is to put it up as hay. South Dakota produced 3,261,000 tons of alfalfa hay in 1968. There were 73 million tons of alfalfa hay produced in the United States during 1968 (10) making it a crop of major importance. Farming practices have changed considerably the last ten years. Among …
A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind
A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Generally sheep production relates to a grassland type of agriculture. But in many areas increasing acreages are used for cultivated crops, and less land is available for pasture due to new or improved cultural practices, increased fertilization, new or improved plant species and, in some areas, irrigation. Since the availability of land for use as pasture will most likely decrease in the future due to the increasing population and food demands of the world, confinement rearing of sheep may become a necessity. Mechanization in the sheep industry has been slow, while the use of confinement or semi-confinement management systems, laborsaving …

A Comparative Analysis Of Selected Characteristics Of Male And Female Felony Offenders In Washington State Adult Correctional Institutions, 1964-1969, Vincent A. Van Der Hyde Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The female offender as an object for sociological study is of interest for several reasons. Among them are, first, the fact that little empirical evidence has been gathered about female offenders: second, the possible impact such knowledge may have on criminological theory building: and third, the necessity of having such knowledge for predictive, control, and rehabilitative functions. The lack of information and research has been noted by many researchers. This thesis is a part of a collateral effort of the Division of Research, Department of Institutions, in Washington State, which is in the process of gathering data on convicted female …
The Effect Of Group Counseling On The Self Concept, Richard Noel Manley
The Effect Of Group Counseling On The Self Concept, Richard Noel Manley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to provide some basic understanding of the value of group counseling as it affects the self concept of individual participants. In many theoretical constructs of humanistic psychology there are numerous references emphasizing that the most important goal for group counseling is individual members’ attainment of a better understanding of themselves. A corollary to this assumption is that by understanding themselves, group members will be able to deal with their own frustrations and conflicts in a more meaningful way. The theoretical construct produced by this philosophical concept of self has been extensive, but the evaluation …
Methods For Rapid Identification And Enumeration Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Lawrence Robert Koupal
Methods For Rapid Identification And Enumeration Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Lawrence Robert Koupal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because water can be a carrier of enteric pathogenic microorganisms, water pollution from a fecal source is a serious problem to a community obtaining water from streams and rivers. Adequate methods for detection of the enteric pathogens are lacking, consequently, much attention has been given to the detection of other microorganisms as indicators of fecal pollution. The microorganisms called the fecal streptococci are those streptococci which are commonly found in the intestinal tract of man and animals. The fecal streptococci have been divided into two basic groups within the Lancefield Group D streptococci. These two groups are the enterococcus group …
A Proposed Model For The Implementation Of Play Therapy In Elementary Schools, Nancy King

Root Pulls And Root Ratings As An Analysis Of Insecticide Performance In The Control Of Corn Rootworms (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), James I. Jessen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera Leconte, the northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica longicornis (Say), and the southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber, are major pests of corn in the corn belt region. In South Dakota, the western and northern corn rootworms are the two predominant species that produce economic damage. The damage produced by this insect complex has elevated them to the position of the number one corn insect pest. In South Dakota the corn rootworm was estimated to produce 5o% of all damage that occurs to corn (Jones, 1968). The corn rootworm is an important factor in the …
The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones
The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Family life education includes the total education for living in families. The main emphasis of all home economics or homemaking education is life as it is lived within the home and family. Some aspects of home economics are usually included in the curriculum at all age levels from early childhood through secondary education. Family life in America has changed over the years. Such factors as family mobility, a greater amount of leisure time, an increase in early marriages, and more mothers employed outside the home indicate the need for education in family living. Moreover, currently fewer youngsters learn about homemaking …
A Novel Fm/Am Telemetry Transmitter, Robert L. Lounsbery
A Novel Fm/Am Telemetry Transmitter, Robert L. Lounsbery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transmission of information is in many cases vital to modern research. An example is the transmission of information which concerns the physiological phenomena taking place inside the body of an unrestrained animal. The transmission of the information has to be accomplished with a minimum amount of-discomfort to the animal. A physical connection to the sensor would cause much discomfort to the animal and would not indicate a normal situation. Therefore, in recent years the information gained from a sensor (inside of an animal's body) has been used as the intelligence to modulate a small telemetry unit. This information is …
A Differential Ph Requirement For Extraction Of Stable Polyribosomes From Winter Barley In Relation To Rnase Activity Of The Tissue, Clay G. Johnson
A Differential Ph Requirement For Extraction Of Stable Polyribosomes From Winter Barley In Relation To Rnase Activity Of The Tissue, Clay G. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The development of a systematic procedure to fractionate cells into functional components is important to many current problems in biological research. Polyribosomes are of considerable interest since it is this cell fraction which is the site of protein synthesis. They are unique structures in that they are reported to contain the transcribed genetic information in the form of messenger RNA (mRNA) which functions as the binding site for ribosomes in the decoding process. A satisfactory isolation of polyribosomes provides an opportunity to analyze the nature of this transcribed genetic message and also determine the extent to which protein synthesis is …
The Influence Of An Unusually High Water Table On Ground Water Quality At A Refuse Disposal Site, Charles Strock Johnson
The Influence Of An Unusually High Water Table On Ground Water Quality At A Refuse Disposal Site, Charles Strock Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At a 1961 symposium on ground water contamination and later in 1963 at a national conference on solid wastes, concern was shown for the protection of one of our most valuable resources - ground water. It was felt at both conferences that a definite need existed for more research in areas pertaining to the nature and mobility of chemical and biological contaminants leached from refuse disposal areas. Finally, in 1965, because of the interest shown in these problems, Congress passed the Solid Waste Disposal Act which created the Office of Solid Wastes within the Public Health Service. Included in on …
Physical And Chemical Properties Of Unconjugated Thiones, Patrick Nicols
Physical And Chemical Properties Of Unconjugated Thiones, Patrick Nicols
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As analyzed by mass spectrometry, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and gas liquid chromatography, the unconjugated thiones prepared were composed of mainly monomer in the presence of some dimer. Certain literature reports on the ultraviolet absorption spectra of unconjugated thiones are erroneous. The monomeric thiones have two electronic transitions at 500nm and at 2J0nm. A transition observed at 210nm was assigned to the transition of the thione dimers (l,J-dithietanes). Nuclear magnetic resonance studies showed that the hydrogens cl to the thione chromophore resonate at lower field than do hydrogens of the corresponding ketones. The chemical shift of the methyl group next to the …
Spread Of Plasticity From The Tip Of A Penny-Shaped Crack, Zong Shyong Luo
Spread Of Plasticity From The Tip Of A Penny-Shaped Crack, Zong Shyong Luo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing attention to failure problems over the last half century went a growing interest in the fracture process in materials. Many previous investigators have studied the elastic distributions around the cracks basing on the idea of Inglis who in 1913 was the first to study an internal crack by use of the elliptical bounding surfaces. Probably the most important concept put forth in this field was Griffith's hypothesis of a brittle fracture which was published in 1921. Employing the idea of Inglis and the principle of conservation of energy, Griffith derived a theoretical formula for the critical stress …
A Comparison Of A Low Protein Diet Plus Added Methionine With A Normal Diet For Three Strains Of Laying Hens In Various Environments, Roger Dale Muller
A Comparison Of A Low Protein Diet Plus Added Methionine With A Normal Diet For Three Strains Of Laying Hens In Various Environments, Roger Dale Muller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The protein requirement of the laying hen encompasses a problem of great importance to the nutritionist. With the discovery of amino acids, which are commonly referred to as "the building blocks of protein," it was soon evident that the fowl had a requirement primarily for amino acids, not protein. It has been difficult to establish the exact amino acid requirements of each species and age group. To overcome this difficulty, feed formulae for laying hens as well as other groups of fowl have been designed to provide a surplus of protein and thus amino acids from a wide variety of …
Effects Of Off-Season Weight Training Programs On Development Of Strength And Explosive Power Of Football Players, Anthony Bartley Mitchell
Effects Of Off-Season Weight Training Programs On Development Of Strength And Explosive Power Of Football Players, Anthony Bartley Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Training to improve athletic performance is as old as the history of man. The ancient Persians began training their boys at the age of six, toughening them psychologically as well as physically by arduous activity under difficult and uncomfortable conditions. The ancient Greeks were fond of the training technique of running in sand with weights around the wrists and ankles. Some of these training techniques were remarkably scientific while others were based on tradition, ritual, or myth. From this colorful past have evolved our present day training programs which are based upon research results and tradition. With our present day …

The Symbiotic Nitrogen-Fixing Endophyte Of Shepherdia Argentea, Ronald J. Stangeland
The Symbiotic Nitrogen-Fixing Endophyte Of Shepherdia Argentea, Ronald J. Stangeland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to isolate the symbiotic endophyte from S. argentea nodules in pure culture and to study the endophyte morphology in situ. In addition to permitting identification of the endophyte, it could be more closely studied for its role in and benefit from the symbiosis. The morphological study in situ would aid in selecting nodule isolates to test for nodule forming ability. The morphological study, therefore, would also aid in identifying the endophyte.
