Effects Of Orally Administered Allopurinol (Hyroxyprazolo 3,4-D Pyrimidine) On Uric Acid, Selected Blood Lipid And Hemogram Parameters In Rabbits, Gary A. Thibodeau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gout is one of the earliest disease entities to be described in medical writings. Hippocrates noted familial distribution patterns and described its classic symptomatology in the 5th century B.C. Empirical treatment employing colchicine was advocated by Alexander of Tralles in the 5th century A.D. A better understanding of the complex association between clinical manifestations of gout and uric acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism has made rational treatment possible only very recently. Ample experimental and clinical data now available show a definite association between disorders of purine metabolism resulting in hyperuricemia and frequent concomitant hyperlipidemia. A high incidence of both …

Ochratoxin In Poultry Feeds : Toxic Effects On Hens, Harlal Choudhury Jan 1970

Ochratoxin In Poultry Feeds : Toxic Effects On Hens, Harlal Choudhury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ochratoxin is a toxin produced by fungus Aspergillus ochraceus Wilh. This is one of the poisonous metabolites, like aflatoxin, which when ingested by livestock, poultry, and human beings could produce toxigenic effects—so-called mycotoxicoses. The fungus A. ochraceus is widely distributed in nature and often found in soil and vegetation. Scientists, while searching for causative agents of certain diseases not of bacterial, viral, or nutritional origin, conducted a series of experiments a few decades ago using different species of fungi grown on food and feedstuffs. Toxic effects concurrent with antimicrobial activity of certain species of molds created problems in separating one …

Infiltration Lagoons As A Tertiary Treatment Device, Terry L. Druyvestein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the United States continues to grow and expand industrially, increased mechanization and shorter work weeks will result in a populace which will expect to enjoy increasing amounts of leisure time. Part of this leisure time will be used to participate in outdoor recreation activities, the result being an increased demand on lakes and streams. Maintaining these waters in a suitable condition for recreation and other beneficial uses has become the concern of most Americans. The Water Quality Act of 1965 and the subsequent state water quality standards are ample proof of the concern given to the control of water …

Darlington and Wiley, 1955). Although the chromosome number of Chlorophytum elatum has ·been reported to be 2N = 28 (Sato, 1942; Baldwin and Speese, 1951) information …

Flannery O'Connor And The Development Of The Grotesque In American Literature, Joan Rae Griffin Jan 1970

Flannery O'Connor And The Development Of The Grotesque In American Literature, Joan Rae Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When man's view of himself as a being in his universe changes with the tide of events, literary conventions change as well. There is very little in contemporary life that would contradict the assumption that man's view of himself and of his world is no longer governed by the assurance of reason or the confidence of prediction. When certainty of man's place in the universe was commonly accepted, for instance in the eighteenth-century, this assurance was reflected in a literature which was essentially rational and ordered. In the last two centuries, drastic upheavals in the course of human events have …

Automatic Irrigation : Sensors And System, Herman G. Hamre Jan 1970

Automatic Irrigation : Sensors And System, Herman G. Hamre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the world in which we live becomes more crowded, the specter of food shortage looms larger. As long as the world population is increasing, the food supply must also be increased to offset predicted shortages. One area under development is the ocean, and federal money is being invested in research on ocean farming techniques. More immediate gain, however, may be obtained by bolstering the already immense capability of the agricultural community. This may be accomplished by increasing the yield of the land under cultivation, or by enabling more land to be cultivated. Irrigation has been used successfully in aiding …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are few vocations that utilize speaking skills as frequently as those of the teacher and the minister. Because of his belief in the importance of -his message, Professor Frederick Manthey, instructor at Martin Luther Academy, said, "A Christian - will do his utmost to further the message of the Gospel in order that this saving message may not be hindered." As a result it would seem appropriate that young men and young women preparing for. the preaching, teaching, or lay ministry or the church would certainly have need for speech training. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the need for vitamin A and vitamin D supplements with rations composed of various levels or corn silage and corn grain when fed to cattle. Early investigations with vitamin D demonstrated that the reduced intensity or sunlight during the winter months resulted in decreased cutaneous formation of vitamin D and that dark- skinned animals synthesized less vitamin D than light skinned animals under given conditions of light intensity. Thus this experiment was conducted with Angus and Angus x Hereford crossbred steers and, to the extent possible under seasonal conditions considered to be …

The Effect Of 2,4-D And Atrazine On The Growth Rate Of A Mixed Algae Culture, John P. King Jan 1970

The Effect Of 2,4-D And Atrazine On The Growth Rate Of A Mixed Algae Culture, John P. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The application of herbicides to both aquatic and terrestrial environments is increasing at a very rapid rate. In the Weed Control Handbook (Blackwell 1960), 71 herbicides are named. Yet today, approximately 3/4 of all weed control is accomplished by 2,4-D, simazine (similar in action to atrazine) and diuron. This application is even more pronounced in predominately agricultural areas such as eastern South Dakota. Both 2,4-D and atrazine are used extensively for weed control in agriculture, and it is not being presumptuous to assume that they are finding their way into our lakes and streams. It is the purpose of this …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The neonatal-anemia syndrome, an anemia of newborn animals, in a commonly observed physiological phenomenon in swine, humans and rats. The severity of the anemia is subject to unpredictable individual variation, but may be modified by the nutrition of the dam. Alterations in swine neonatal hemogram values begin 3-5 days postpartum and include decreases in packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentration. Vigorous and healthy appearing newborn become weak and particularly subject to infective agents and stresses, which may terminate in death. A slow return to postpartum hemogram values is observed if the newborn animal survives. The economic considerations of newborn mortality …

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu Jan 1970

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The name "epizootic hemorrhagic disease" (EHD) of deer was first given by Shope et al. in 1955 because of the occurrence of the hemorrhagic disease in large epizootic_ proportions and because of its pathological features. It was also determined by them that the causative agent for the disease is a virus. Difficulties in studying the causative agent have been encountered because no host system other than the deer itself was available to support replication or detect the virus. However, isolation of the New Jersey strain of EHD virus was accomplished by Mettler et al. in 1962 using newborn mice and …

The Effects Of Selected Training Intensities And Durations On Blood Cholesterol And Selected Anthropometric Measurements, Alan Ingmar Molde Jan 1970

The Effects Of Selected Training Intensities And Durations On Blood Cholesterol And Selected Anthropometric Measurements, Alan Ingmar Molde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical inactivity, due to automation and our busy mode of living, has contributed to a health problem in modern society. When obesity, high-fat diets, cigarette smoking, and stress are added, the end-product is an alarming increase in incidence of diseases of the heart and lungs. Admittedly, such diseases are multifactorial in cause, but inactivity appears to assume an increasingly important role. Exercise in relation to preventative and rehabilitative medicine, however, is a new and rapid changing field of research. Consequently, the knowledge concerning physical conditioning and training programs is limited and inadequate. Therefore, educators in health and physical education are …

The Origin And Development Of Sunday Competition Between The Hartford Courant And The Hartford Times, James M. Neal Jr. Jan 1970

The Origin And Development Of Sunday Competition Between The Hartford Courant And The Hartford Times, James M. Neal Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that the Times was an afternoon paper and the Courant a morning paper, the two were more alike than they were different throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Each newspaper was increasingly influenced by persons not native to New England, but both retained executives with New England roots. They were closely balanced in manpower, they competed vigorously for the same kinds of news, and (after September, 1968) they presented similar Sunday packages. Carl Lindstrom's charge that newspapers were increasingly dominated by the business offices could hardly be applied fairly to either newspaper in Hartford by 1970. The publishers …

The Effects Of 2-Chloroethylphosphonic Acid On Bud The Effects Of 2-Chloroethylphosphonic Acid On Bud Vascularization In Sorghum Halapense, L.Ascularization In Sorghum Halapense, L., Robert Allen Peterson Jan 1970

The Effects Of 2-Chloroethylphosphonic Acid On Bud The Effects Of 2-Chloroethylphosphonic Acid On Bud Vascularization In Sorghum Halapense, L.Ascularization In Sorghum Halapense, L., Robert Allen Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An assumption can be postulated that the auxin produced in the stem apex may inhibit bud development by preventing differentiation of vascular connections between the cauline bundle and the bud primordia. This would deprive the primordia of nutrients and growth substances being translocated in the mainstream vascular elements. The assumption is that prior to decapitation, vascularization is incomplete to the laterals in johnsongrass and that after decapitation, vascularization becomes complete. Dr. C. A. Beasley has found that plants treated with ethrel will react the same as decapitated plants. This study was designed to examine ethrel treated plants and examine anatomically …

Bridge Girder Webs Subjected To Horizontal Loads, Randall Felix Preheim Jan 1970

Bridge Girder Webs Subjected To Horizontal Loads, Randall Felix Preheim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Common bridge construction practice in South Dakota involves suspending the deck finishing machine and the freshly poured deck overhang from temporary metal brackets. These brackets are attached to the webs of the exterior plate girders. When loaded during construction, the brackets transmit to the web a vertical shearing force plus a couple. Since the webs are not designed for carrying horizontal loads, this type of loading could overstress the webs and appreciably lower their ultimate resistance to buckling. With specifications now permitting large depth to thickness ratios, deflections as well as stresses may be excessive. Rotation of the brackets, caused …

An Investigation Of Eye-Movements When X-Height And Line Length Are Held Constant And Alphabet Length Is Prismatically Varied, Harold D. Perry Jan 1970

An Investigation Of Eye-Movements When X-Height And Line Length Are Held Constant And Alphabet Length Is Prismatically Varied, Harold D. Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growing percentage· of type set by the "cold type" process combined with the growth of lithographic printing has increased the use of filmed typefaces. Machines now exist that can greatly reduce or enlarge a filmed typeface from its original size. A prism attachment on a process camera allows type to be altered in one dimension while holding the other constant. The effects on readability of such alterations are of importance to the printer. In a master's degree thesis study, Joseph W. Truex used a prism camera to simultaneously and direct! vary line length and alphabet length. He found no …

A historical thesis on the development of speech education at Watertown Senior High School, Watertown, South Dakota, is proposed. The specific purpose is to present, in an orderly fashion, a chronology of the development of curricular and cocurricular speech education from the opening of Watertown Senior High School in 1879 through the 1968-1969 academic school year. A study of the past is often valuable as a guide to the future. Historians from the field of speech recognized this fact when, in 1941, they authorized the compilation of A History of Speech Education in America. Chapters 20 and 21 of that …

Flexural Analysis Of Two-Way Slabs By Yield-Line Theory, D. Bapu Rao Jan 1970

Flexural Analysis Of Two-Way Slabs By Yield-Line Theory, D. Bapu Rao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The yield-line theory provides a powerful tool for studying the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete slabs at ultimate load. The ductility of steel reinforcement and the plastic properties of concrete material constitute the basis for this theory. Therefore, the application of yield-line theory depends on full plastic behavior in the slab at failure; thus, the slab is assumed to be under reinforced. Yield lines initiate at locations of maximum stress and with increasing load they propagate to a full yield-line pattern; at this stage the slab is divided into-segments and is subjected to its maximum useful load. However, due to …
