Corixidae (Water Boatmen) Abundance And Contribution To Littoral Zone Fish Forage In Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, Richard Lee Applegate

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corixids were sampled each week in littoral zone areas of Lake Poinsett during the open water seasons, April-October, in 1970, 1971, and 1972. Fish were sampled each week in littoral zone areas in 1970 and food habits studies were conducted to determine if fish predation would influence corixid population dynamics. Seven genera and 15 species of the family Corixidae were collected. Major indigenous species were Palmarcorixa buenoi Abbott, Trichocorixa borealis Sailer, Cenocorixa dakotensis (Hungerford), and Sigara conocephala (Hungerford). Species migrating to Lake Poinsett in the fall to overwinter were Sigara alternata (Say), S. solensis (Hungerford), S. bicoloripennis (Walley), Hesperocorixa vulgaris …

Permeability And Consolidation Characteristics Of Soils Producing Irregular-Shaped Compaction Curves, Terry L. Forest Jan 1974

Permeability And Consolidation Characteristics Of Soils Producing Irregular-Shaped Compaction Curves, Terry L. Forest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through many years of study, it has been found that one of the best methods of classifying soils is by strength, and the best and most economical method of obtaining strength is by compaction. By compacting a soil, the shear strength is increased permeability decreased, and future settlement or consolidation decreased. These properties. of' permeability and consolidation are important in the design of any structure whether it is a dam, single or multi-story building, bridge, highway, or lagoon. The engineer must be sure that the consolidation and permeability of the soil are such that the structure will be able to …

Factors Associated With Population Changes In Rural South Dakota Communities, Sidney G. Goss Jan 1974

Factors Associated With Population Changes In Rural South Dakota Communities, Sidney G. Goss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students of demography have long been aware that populations change over time: they are dynamic. The determination and explanation of population change forms the central focus of population analysis, and the question arises as to what factors best explain observed variations in population changes occurring in South Dakota rural towns. Consequently, this study investigates the following problem. What is the association between selected demographic, geographic, economic, and social factors and the population changes that transpired from 1960 to 1970 in South Dakota incorporated places classified as rural in both 1960 and 1970? Specifically, the study attempts to determine: 1. What …

The Decompostion Of Organic Matter In Two Midgrass Prairies In Western South Dakota, Venance H. Lengkeek Jan 1974

The Decompostion Of Organic Matter In Two Midgrass Prairies In Western South Dakota, Venance H. Lengkeek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

All ecosystems have two basic biological components. One component is the autotrophic organisms which fix energy from the sun and use inorganic substances to create food. The other is the heterotrophic organisms which utilize the stored food of the autotrophs, rearrange it, and finally decompose the complex materials into simple inorganic compounds. The autotrophs, which are predominantly green plants, grow wherever the most sunlight is available, heterotrophs predominate wherever organic matter accumulates, primarily in the upper layer of the soil. Heterotrophs consist of consumers which feed on green plants and other organisms. Decomposers, chiefly bacteria and fungi that break down …

Together the activities played an important role in the history of the area. Both activities have passed, but their importance remains. The purpose of this study has been to compile a selective history of the Communicative and educational efforts of the Big Stone Lake Chautauqua and the Summer School …

Experimental Study Of Noise Propagation In A High Velocity Flow Field, Ismail Tag Jan 1974

Experimental Study Of Noise Propagation In A High Velocity Flow Field, Ismail Tag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A great deal of effort has been devoted to the study of noise suppression in the jet engine air intake. Noise suppression by sonic choking is well known, but noise suppression by subsonic choking is less understood. Sound waves generated by the compressor fan are attenuated while travelling upstream in high Mach number flow. The limiting case is when a sonic plane is generated in the inlet. In this case, theoretically speaking, no sound waves can travel through the sonic plane. There are many factors which influence subsonic choking. The nonlinear behavior of the spinning waves generated by the compressor …

Attitudes Of Brookings High School Students Toward Variant Media And Use Of Library Resources, Joan D. Tabor Jan 1974

Attitudes Of Brookings High School Students Toward Variant Media And Use Of Library Resources, Joan D. Tabor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study such as this is important in that a student with the desire to keep abreast of current events should have an equal opportunity to read the current periodicals. If the home is unable financially to provide this material, the schools should assume the role of provider. If all students have access to current materials and do not depend upon library periodicals; perhaps the amount of money being budgeted cannot be justified. The objectives of this study were to determine: 1. What media did the students of Brookings High School use for information gathering and/or opinion formulation concerning current …

A Dynamic Impact Model Of Regional Income : A Reduced Form Approach, Cameron S. Thraen Jan 1974

A Dynamic Impact Model Of Regional Income : A Reduced Form Approach, Cameron S. Thraen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a time of increased awareness of regional and community repercussions of socio-economic and political decisions which often originate outside of the region or community, there is a strong need for the development of a theoretically acceptable, and statistically applicable method, by which the impact of these various decisions upon the regional economy can be delineated. A priori knowledge, based upon an abstract theoretical model is not sufficient. The ramifications of decisions which affect the income producing sectors of a regional economy are not contained within a vacuum. It is paramount that the regional impacts of such decisions be estimated …

Synthesis Of Some Organic Conductive Materials, Margaret Hsien-Chun Wang Jan 1974

Synthesis Of Some Organic Conductive Materials, Margaret Hsien-Chun Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal in conducting the experimental work involved in the formulating of this thesis was to synthesize some organic conducting compounds by utilizing the highly electronegative 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethan complexed with some completely conjugated benzologs of the quinolizinium ion. The history is divided into three parts, the first part describing the electronic properties of organic conducting polymers, the second part dealing with anion-radical derivatives and complexes of 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethan, the third part describing some benzologs of the quinolizinium ion. 1. Electronic Properties of Organic Conducting Polymers One of the most important problems of present-day chemistry is the creation of new substances and …

An Analysis Of The Earnings-Price Index As An Investment Tool, Raymond J. Wood Jan 1974

An Analysis Of The Earnings-Price Index As An Investment Tool, Raymond J. Wood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An investor maintains a portfolio containing various quantities of such items as money, bonds, securities, or other physical goods which comprise his wealth. Assuming that the investor attempts to maximize his wealth subject to his preferences toward risk, then the investor must make a change in his portfolio to maintain equilibrium if there is a change in the condition affecting either risk, appreciation, rate of return or any of the assets in his portfolio. As a result, the rates of return of the various forms of wealth become very important, i.e., the expected rate of return on bonds vis-a-vis the …
