Comparative Analyses Of Teacher Verbal And Nonverbal Behavior In A Traditional And An Open-Space Setting, Betty L. Hankins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to observe, analyze, and compare teacher verbal and non verbal behaviors as they were exhibited toward students in both traditional class rooms and open-space class rooms. Particular emphasis was placed on determining the degree, if any, to which teachers in open-space class rooms were more indirect and encouraging than direct and restricting in their behaviors than teachers in traditional class rooms. Reclamation Of Orphan Strip Mined Land In Southern Illinois And Western Kentucky : A Field Study Of The Palzo Project Of Williamson County, Illinois And The Clear Creek Swamp Of Webster And Hopkins Counties, Kentucky., Clara Ann Leuthart 1946-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The areas studied exhibit different aspects of the problem of orphan strip mines. The Palzo tract is a 192 acre parcel of orphan land in southern Illinois that is being reclaimed by incorporating sewage sludge into the spoil and seeding. Seven sampling stations were established along Sugar Creek which drains the Palzo area. Six of these stations were well above the area to be reclaimed. The seventh was located below the area receiving acid mine drainage. A study of Cairn's, Simpson's, Patten's, Margalef's, Menhinick's, and Wilhm and Dorris' diversity indices at the stations showed that such indices are misleading and …

A Comparison Of Two Smoking Reduction Treatments Under Conditions Designed To Be Interfering Or Not Interfering With The Smoking Habit., Gary Clive Salk 1944- May 1975

A Comparison Of Two Smoking Reduction Treatments Under Conditions Designed To Be Interfering Or Not Interfering With The Smoking Habit., Gary Clive Salk 1944-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thirty smokers were solicited from the Wichita, Kansas community via the newspaper and broadcast media for a stop-smoking project. The volunteers were assigned to one of two treatments: double smoking or a modification of Von Dedenroth's (1964) treatment. Each of these treatments was further divided into two groups. These groups were designed to provide high and low interference with the smoker's habit. No effect was observed for interference and it was observed that the experimental conditions probably did not permit the possibility of more than a small interference effect in either group. However, a significant effect for time and time …

The Effects Of Selected Pesticides On Ten Isolates Of Terrestrial Algae., Martha Scheer Salk 1945- May 1975

The Effects Of Selected Pesticides On Ten Isolates Of Terrestrial Algae., Martha Scheer Salk 1945-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ten algal isolates were obtained from soil into axenic culture and placed into defined media containing from 0 to 50 ppm of DDT, 2, 4-D,2,4,5-T, rotenone, or malathion (in two purities, 95 and 99%). For nine of the isolates, growth was measured photometrically every two weeks for a period of two months. Because of the twisted growth form, of the tenth isolate, a visual estimation was used to measure its growth over the same period of time. The results of the experiments in the light were as follows: 1) 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T were generally neutral in their growth effects. However, …

A Comparative Study Of Ribonuclease From Two Winter Barley Cultivars Based Upon Separation, Purification And Partial Characterization Of Rna-Degrading Enzymes, Raymond Sze-Chung Wong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The differences in the response to KCl of the RNA-degrading enzymes of two barley cultivars, “Dicktoo” (a hardy type) and "Tennessee Winter” (a non-hardy type), were investigated. Two types of enzymes, ribonuclease (RNase) and nuclease, were separated from crude extracts by disc electrophoresis. The electrophoretic gels were assayed for RNA-degrading activity in the presence and absence of EDTA (EDTA is a nuclease inhibitor). By means of density gradient isoelectric focusing, the nuclease preparation from Tennessee Winter was shown to have an isoelectric point between 5.3 and 5.5, while the nuclease preparation from Dicktoo has three isoelectric points of 4.9, 5.5 …

Effects Of Atrazine On Penned Pheasants And The Occurrence Of Stress Marks On Feathers, Thomas Orin Melius

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Doses of 4 g of atrazine (AAtrex) were not lethal to penned hen pheasants (Phasispus colchicus), but levels of 6, 8, 10 and 12 g induced mortality. Pen studies to determine the effects of atrazine on reproduction of hen pheasants were conducted with two replicates of the basic test. Birds were administered treatment levels of 0, 100, 200, or 400 mg of atrazine per hen per week. Egg production and gain in weight of hens were unaffected by the treatments. Replicate A eggs were unaffected by the treatments. Replicate A eggs were unaffected in shell thickness and pipping rates, while …

Nesting of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) was studied in 1973 and 1974 and 90 randomly chosen 4.05 – ha plots in the Lake Sinai Township of south-western Brookings County. Nest initiation and hatching peaks over the 2-year period occurred from 1-15 may and 16-30 June, respectively. Average density of nests was 0.3 per hectare in 1973 and 0.2 in 1974. Average clutch size for combined years was 8.6 for all nests and 10.8 for nests where clutches hatched. Clutch sizes declines as the nesting season progressed. Fertility of eggs in nests where clutches hatched was 96 percent. Hatching success …

Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant Jan 1975

Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), yellow bullhead (Ictalurus natalis), and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were studied during 1973 and 1974 in Abbey Pond, South Dakota. Organisms found in young-of-the-year fish stomachs and in plankton samples were identified and counted in the laboratory. Zooplankton, aquatic insects and fish were the most important food organisms consumed by young fishes. Using Ivlev’s electivity index food electivity by the fishes for zooplankton was calculated. The size-specific food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass progressed from entomostracans to aquatic insects to fish. In most cases zooplanktons …
