Morphological, Biochemical And Fluorescent Antibody Studies Of Haemophilus Somnus, Danny W. Chladek Jan 1976

Morphological, Biochemical And Fluorescent Antibody Studies Of Haemophilus Somnus, Danny W. Chladek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Haemophilus somnus was the tentative name given in 1969 to a fastidious gram negative pleomorphic coccobacillus which was consistently isolated from cattle affected with a clinical syndrome called thrombo embolic meningoencephalitis (TEME)(1). The organism was initially classidied as an Actinobacillus actinoides- like organism, but because of its demand for a blood base for primary isolationit was reclassified as Haemophilus-like. Bailie then designated the species name somnus, referring to the sleepiness commonly exhibited by TEME affected cattle(1). In this study, the biochemical reactions of 50 H. somnus isolants recovered from bovine specimens submitter to the South Dakota …

The Composition And Dynamics Of The Soil Algal Flora In A Western South Dakota Grassland, Judith Ann Freeman Jan 1976

The Composition And Dynamics Of The Soil Algal Flora In A Western South Dakota Grassland, Judith Ann Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forest, Miller and Raizen (1963) and Hutcheson and Olson (1967) have conducted two of the only investigations on soil algae in a prairie ecosystem. The present investigation dealt first with identification of genera of algae present in the soil and an evaluation of their numbers. Secondarily a relationship was established between the numbers of algae in the soil (by species) and their environment, by the correlation coefficients. The variation in the environment was then used to predict the occurrence of algae in the soil using stepwise additive multiple regression analysis. Finally several environmental factors were evaluated under controlled conditions to …

Incidence Of Alfalfa Mosaic Virus Infected Plants In Fourteen Alfalfa Cultivars, Venkatrao Korapaty Jan 1976

Incidence Of Alfalfa Mosaic Virus Infected Plants In Fourteen Alfalfa Cultivars, Venkatrao Korapaty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) is of particular concern because of its widespread occurrences in most alfalfa fields. It is known to adversely affect yield but the percentages of reduction in alfalfa forage yield due to AMV infection found by many researchers have been quite varied. With 30 million acres devoted to alfalfa production in the United States, even conservative estimates of yield decreases due to AMV infection will result in economic losses that run into millions of dollars. No adequate method has been developed to control AMV in alfalfa. The development of resistant alfalfa varieties would be a desirable means …

The Effect Of An In-Season Weight Training Program On The Muscular Strength Of Intercollegiate Football Players, James E. Willet Jan 1976

The Effect Of An In-Season Weight Training Program On The Muscular Strength Of Intercollegiate Football Players, James E. Willet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intercollegiate football has become highly competitive over the past decade. As new records are set each year, offensively as well as defensively, it is imperative that players maintain a high level of strength throughout the competitive season. Ample investigations have been conducted in off-season weight training; however, there are few investigations pertaining to the use of a weight training program during the competitive season. McKay believes that while a weight training program must develop strength and endurance in the muscles used in playing the game, the program must not reduce the players’ reflexes or speed. At one time, in-season weight …

An Evaluation Of The Fluctuations In New Car Sales For Rapid City, Denver, And The U.S. From October 1973 Through March 1975, Stephen Philip Boyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the past three years the American economy in general and the automobile industry in particular was plagued with inflation, recession, and unemployment. With sales declining during those years, profits vanished and layoffs increased within the automobile industry. One of the factors that contributed to this problem was the Arab oil Embargo of November, 1973. In the last quarter of 1973, when the automobile industry started its prolonged decline in sales, most of the Oil Producing and Export Countries (OPEC) were redirecting the world economy for their own benefit through embargoes and price fixing on their oil. Because of the …

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington Jan 1976

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For more than thirty years, Mary McCarthy has served as the conscience of the liberal American intellectual. McCarthy’s method of writing is satire, and she treats both her sympathetic and unsympathetic characters satirically. The characters in her fiction are generally liberal intellectuals who follow one of two patterns. The sympathetic characters are those who, despite their flaws, endeavor to be conscientious, objective and truth seeking. They are plagued by self-doubt and constant awareness o their own limitations. In contrast, her unsympathetic characters are egotistical and self-deluding. Their intellectual capabilities are bent not toward fulfillment of their liberal and humanitarian ideals, …

The Influence Of Corn Removal Date On Corn Rootworm Oviposition, Resultant Larval Populations And Damage, Michael F. Holm Jan 1976

The Influence Of Corn Removal Date On Corn Rootworm Oviposition, Resultant Larval Populations And Damage, Michael F. Holm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of corn removal for silage on rootworm oviposition and on the resulting populations and damage the following years. If the corn is removed before oviposition occurs, and if the beetles go elsewhere to lay their eggs, damage to the corn roots the following spring should be prevented. This would save farmers insecticide costs the following year. To determine how adult populations present in the corn field in late summer and fall affect damage to the corn the following spring, corn vegetation was removed on different dates encompassing the time oviposition …

Hypophosphite Photographic Emulsions, Randal A. Johnson Jan 1976

Hypophosphite Photographic Emulsions, Randal A. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to study the sensitivity of emulsions of various hypophosphite salts to irradiation by photons in the x-ray region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This hypophosphate system bears little resemblance to the more common silver halide currently used in emulsions. Consequently, little is known about the reaction conditions necessary to make fast, sensitive emulsions or how to develop resultant latent images. The projects involves the synthesis and characterization of several compounds which have not been extensively characterized in previous work. Characterization of these salts involved the following techniques: Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, and …
