Effects Of Listeria Hemolysin On Mouse Embryos, Bruce A. Beck
Effects Of Listeria Hemolysin On Mouse Embryos, Bruce A. Beck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Listeriosis, an infectious disease of animals and man, is characterized by localized encephalitis, meningoencephalitis or abortion. In 1933 Listeria was first isolated from a human infant and in the late 1930’s, listeric abortion was first recorded in cattle and sheep. Not until 1950 was much attention given to perinatal listeric infection. Since then, uterine infection and abortion, stillbirth or neonatal death have been reported in virtually all species of animals. Statistics from the South Dakota Animal Research and Diagnostic Laboratory show that abortion cause by Listeria monocytogenes accounted for 48 per cent of the 164 reported cases of listeriosis over …
The Effects Of Varying Intensities Of Physical Activity On Performance Of A Gross Motor Task, Jan E. Flynn
The Effects Of Varying Intensities Of Physical Activity On Performance Of A Gross Motor Task, Jan E. Flynn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effects of varying intensities of warm-up in the performance of a gross motor task were tested among women who were members of a basic instruction individual fitness class. The bicycle ergometer was used as the warm-up device, while the heart rate was monitored through the use of a Corbin-Farnsworth Cardiotachometer. A modified jump test served as the gross motor task. The data collection occurred over a four day period. An analysis of variance procedure was used to determine whether significant differences occurred in test performance between subjects, and between the four treatments for each subject. At the .05 level, …
Bacterial Methylation Of Selenium, Wen-Ing Hwang
Bacterial Methylation Of Selenium, Wen-Ing Hwang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For several decades, excessive levels of selenium in feeds have been known to cause various toxic symptoms in livestock. Excessive selenium levels in feeds are the result of plants growing on soils which contain significant levels of selenium. The natural cycling process by which selenium becomes available appears to involve various chemical weathering processes. In addition, microbial action may play a direct or indirect role in rendering selenium soluble. (1). The extent to which microoganisms are involved in the natural cycling processes has been subject to considerable discussion. It has been demonstrated that mold can convert selenate or selenite to …

The study by Spector was based on a comparison of the count of favorable, unfavorable and neutral editorial items with vote on a municipal referendum. Spector found a high correlation between editorial position and the election outcome. The editorial policy of the Bridgeport daily newspaper was decidedly against the municipal referendum. Spector coded 23 unfavorable editorials (against the referendum), one neutral in content, and none favorable. Bridgeport voters voted 73 percent against the referendum. Voters in the 15 1/2 – county Oahe Conservancy Sub-District in 1960 voted overwhelmingly (85.5%) to establish the sub-district board to monitor and promote the Oahe …
Cover Use And Activity Time Budget Of Blue-Winged Teal, Mallard, And Pintail Broods, James K. Ringelman
Cover Use And Activity Time Budget Of Blue-Winged Teal, Mallard, And Pintail Broods, James K. Ringelman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Blue-winged teal (Anas discors), mallard (A. platyrhynchos), and pintail (A. acuta) broods were observed on 17 days between 25 June and 30 July, 1976. Brood activities and cover uses were recorded continuously from first light until dark. Observations of 269 broods from three wetlands were evaluated by species and brood age-class. Activity time budgets revealed significant (p<.01) age specific differences in total feeding time and visibility among age-classes of all species combined and age-classes of blue-winged teal broods. Feeding modes also varied among age-classes. Daily patterns of cover use varied among brood age-classes and species. Morning and evening feeding peaks became more pronounced, and overall visibility increased, with brood age. Interspecific differences in daily activity patterns were observed among broods of the same age-class. Duration of active periods increased with age in blue-winged teal broods. Active periods recurred at regular intervals in all broods throughout the day, suggestive of polycyclic behavior patterns similar to those of adult ducks. A progressive increase in brood visibility was attributed primarily to seasonal changes in brood age structure and to wetland water loss. Temperature and wind speed influenced brood visibility during most observation days. Climatic conditions favorable to nighttime brood activity influenced brood behavior during the following day. Accuracy of present brood inventory techniques could be improved if considerations were made for brood behavior patterns and environmental factors which alter brood cover use.
Aspects Of Some Compacted Campground Ameliorating Practices, Keith Foster
Aspects Of Some Compacted Campground Ameliorating Practices, Keith Foster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if the direct mechanical manipulation of compacted campground soils, with and without the addition of organic materials and the planting of grasses, had any long lasting effect on the amelioration of these deteriorated campsites. An attempt was also made to determine the natural recovery time for East Texas sandy loam soils using the campground closure method. Closure or partial (seasonal) closure of campsites reduced compaction to an acceptable level in three years. Roto-tilling alone was the least effective treatment. Roto-tilling and the addition of bark or chips to maintain the loose soil …
One Blake : The Principles And Method Of Visionary Awakening In The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, Milton, And Jerusalem., Richard Lee Record
One Blake : The Principles And Method Of Visionary Awakening In The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, Milton, And Jerusalem., Richard Lee Record
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Essential to an understanding of William Blake is the knowledge of his intense identification with the messianic "perfect prophet," described by the Old Testament prophets, St. John, and Milton, and of the thematic unity which this identification produces in his work. The principles which lead to the attainment of this prophetic role--visionary awakening--and the moment of vision itself are the raw materials for his canon and provide the framework for his three key engraved works. The principles of visionary awakening and the epiphanic moment are outlined in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, elaborated in Milton, and extended to all …
