A Comparative Perspective On The Status Attainment Process Of White And Native American Youth, Leonard R. Decker Jan 1980

A Comparative Perspective On The Status Attainment Process Of White And Native American Youth, Leonard R. Decker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Status attainment, as commonly indicated by levels of educational and occupational achievement, is a complicated process. A variety of variables have been found to be quite influential in the determination of one's eventual position in the social hierarchy of American society. Research done jointly by William H. Sewell and Robert M. Hauser (1972, 1975) regarding the status attainment process has resulted in a Wisconsin model of Adolescent Achievement in which the authors have identified a number of experiences that have significant import for young people's post-high school educational and occupational attainments. The Sewell and Hauser model links socioeconomic origins and …

Soil Microfungal Relationships Associated With Grassland Reestablishment, Dennis C. Clarke Jan 1980

Soil Microfungal Relationships Associated With Grassland Reestablishment, Dennis C. Clarke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mixed prairie association has a characteristic soil microfungal flora associated with the cover vegetation (Clarke and Christensen, 1980). Rhizosphere organisms are correlated with the cover vegetation (Christensen, 1969) and a change in the cover vegetation should be accompanied by a change in the organisms in the rhizosphere. Some disturbances that may lead to change in the cover vegetation are tillage, grazing, interseeding, mowing and fires. Christensen's (1980) review of species diversity and dominance in fungal communities indicates that in general these disturbances tend to reduce soil microfungal diversity while increasing the frequency of the remaining species. Other studies have …

Bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) made up 68.3% of these species; tadpole madtoms (Noturus gyrinus), 25.8%; orangespotted sunfish (L.humilis), 3.6%; and black bullheads (Ictalurus melas), 2.3%. The estimated total standing crop of the 4 forage …

Nesting And Brood Rearing Ecology Of The Vancouver Canada Goose On Admiralty Island Southeast Of Alaska, Charles S. Lebeda Jan 1980

Nesting And Brood Rearing Ecology Of The Vancouver Canada Goose On Admiralty Island Southeast Of Alaska, Charles S. Lebeda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nesting and brood rearing biology of Vancouver Canada geese (Branta canadensis fulva) was studied in 1978 (preliminary) and from April-August 1979 in Seymour Canal, Admiralty Island, Alaska. Geese used trees for perching during the incubation period (24 April-7 June) and use was significant (P < .0001) for early morning hours. This behavior is considered unique among all Canada goose subspecies. An average of 86.3 search hours were conducted for each of 19 active nests located in 1979. Seven additional nests from previous years were also located. Twenty-two nests were located in forest habitat •. All forest nests were in association with vegetation similar to vegetation described for U.S. Forest Service classification of F4 and F5 (poorly drained) soil types. Mean clutch size was 4.4 ± 1.3 eggs. Mean egg length and width were 86.1 mm± 3.14 and 56.4 mm± 2.76, respectively. Success of all nests hatching at least one egg was 55.6%. Egg hatching success of successful nests was 95.7%. Total hatching success of all eggs was 62.0%. Forest habitat was used extensively for brood rearing. Broods generally avoided large bodies of water. Single family broods were found most often in forest habitat while creches were more common in meadows and intertidal zones. Breeding adults and goslings were comparatively less vocal in the forest. Goslings less than 2 weeks of age used forest habitat extensively and shifted to forest edge and intertidal zones with age. Forest habitats, rather than open water, were used as escape cover by breeding adults and broods. Nesting and brood rearing habitat was similar, thus, nest site selection may be closely tied to requirements for brood rearing habitat. Molting, non-breeding or unsuccessful breeding geese also used forest habitat freely and avoided observers by fleeing into the forest. Use of habitat compared to tide stage was significant (P < .0001) and may be a function of availability. Habitat use compared to daily time periods appeared to reflect feeding activity peaks in early morning and late afternoon. Adult geese primarily used the intertidal zone during pre-incubation; the grassy intertidal zone was used more during incubation and post-incubation. Skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanum) comprised 23.8% aggregate of foods utilized and appeared to be the most important food during brood rearing. Goslings and molting geese also utilized sea lettuce (Ulva spp.) and blueberry (Yaccinium spp.) berries. Plant matter comprised the bulk of food items.

Twenty-six null hypotheses were formulated, covering different sourse [sic]-message variation as applied …

Partitioning Energy Requirements Of Angus, Charolais And Reciprocal Cross Cows, Vernon L. Anderson Jan 1980

Partitioning Energy Requirements Of Angus, Charolais And Reciprocal Cross Cows, Vernon L. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing energy costs have stimulated more interest in efficient use of our natural resources. Utilization of energy in agricultural enterprises needs to be critically evaluated for economic survival of the enterprise. Feed energy required for beef production comes largely from harvested and unharvested forage and grasses constitute a high proportion of the costs of maintaining a cow. These costs have increased along with other production inputs. Beef cattle producers need to know how total feed energy is utilized in order to increase their efficiency. Cow herd efficiency is extremely important, especially the energetic efficiency of various size groups. Knowing the …

Groundwater Quality In The Vicinity Of Seeping Stablilization Ponds, Gary Lee Bleeker Jan 1980

Groundwater Quality In The Vicinity Of Seeping Stablilization Ponds, Gary Lee Bleeker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protection on our nation’s streams and lakes has received high priority during the last 20 years. Modernization has provided people with more leisure time. With more free time people have begun to utilize lakes and rivers as recreational facilities, requiring that pollution of such facilities be prevented. To control pollution and restore waterways, laws such as the Water Quality Act of 1965, Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972 and the Clean Water Act of 1977 have been implemented. Such laws have forced polluters to establish treatment for their wastewaters. No longer is the open discharge of wastes into streams …

Isolation And Identification Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria From Bovine Lung Abscesses, Steven Lee Daniel Jan 1980

Isolation And Identification Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria From Bovine Lung Abscesses, Steven Lee Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years, the role of anerobic bacteria in human disease was considered important only in such clostridial diseases as gas gangrene, botulism and tetanus. In the last 10 years, however, the development of new methods to isolate and identify anaerobic bacteria has established the pathogenic role of non-sporeforming anerobic bacteria in a wide variety of clinical infections in humans. Bacteroides fragilis is now known to account for approximately one fourth of all anerobic bacteria isolated from human clinical specimens. Recent advances in anaerobic bacteriology likewise have established that anaerobic bacteria are found as normal flora on the skin and …

Comparison Of Theoretical And Experimental Infiltration Heat-Loss Results In Two Residential Houses In Brookings, South Dakota, Fereidoon Delfanian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Up to 40% of the heating/cooling energy requirement of a typical home can be attributed to unnecessary air infiltration. To reduce the energy costs of heating/cooling a home, it is therefore essential that every possible measure be taken to reduce the loss of conditioned air through the many leakage paths in a house. In order to accomplish this, it is first necessary to locate these leaks, and to determine their relative importance. Both theoretical and experimental techniques have been developed to accomplish this. This effort compares existing theoretical techniques to new experimental results on two houses of different window construction, …

The Effects Of Acute Ammonia Toxicity On Certain Blood Chemistries In Sheep, Gayleen Riedemann Jan 1980

The Effects Of Acute Ammonia Toxicity On Certain Blood Chemistries In Sheep, Gayleen Riedemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein has always been in short supply in the world. This will be even more evident when the world’s population reaches the projected 5.8 billion by the year 2000. Rosenfeld noted that not only will there be more mouths to feed, but there is also a decrease in cropland due to increased housing and industry. For these reasons, along with the monetary benefits, urea has been added to feeds for ruminants to prevent the waste of valuable protein. The Board on Agriculture and Renewable Resources cited several factors which may cause urea toxicity to develop: (1) lack of an adequate …

Public Housing For The Elderly : The Relationship Of Selected Physical Standards To Resident Satisfaction, Kathleen L. Zoellner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major area of recent interest to the elderly is housing. One of the reasons housing has become a major concern is because housing represents much more than a physical structure in our society. Housing is a subject of highly charged emotional content with many strong feelings attached. The housing environment seems to have considerable control over they way in which individuals perceive themselves and over others perception of them. The design of buildings can have an important effect on the persons who live and move around in them. In the United States there has been experimentation with a variety …

Martha Ostenso : Romance Versus Realism, Laura Bosch Jan 1980

Martha Ostenso : Romance Versus Realism, Laura Bosch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Martha Ostenso’s career as a novelist can be summarized as one of overnight success, loss of reputation, and finally obscurity. Still, her life, coupled with her fiction, provides a paradoxical and fascinating story. It might even be viewed as representative of the emerging consciousness of the American woman during the early part of the twentieth century. In 1924, at the age of twenty-four, she was awarded the highest sum ever granted a North American author for a first novel; by the time of her death in 1963, she was virtually an unknown and unreputed as a serious author. The following …

Penance And Confession In Medieval Literature For The Laity, Mary J. Daniel Jan 1980

Penance And Confession In Medieval Literature For The Laity, Mary J. Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The world of the Middle Ages was one which constantly reminded man of his temporary nature and uncertain future. All around him, the medieval man witnessed disease, disaster and death. The bubonic plague mysteriously appeared in the fourteenth century to claim, according to some estimates, as much as one third of the population of the unknown world. Earthquakes, storms and droughts were considered by many as the signs of God’s displeasure with man, and he natural explanations of these phenomena were left to the later generations. Poor hygiene and inadequate knowledge of how to deal with the problems of overpopulation …

The Influence Of Frame Size On Growth And Carcass Characteristics In Swine Taken To Heavy Weights, Wayne Vanderwert Jan 1980

The Influence Of Frame Size On Growth And Carcass Characteristics In Swine Taken To Heavy Weights, Wayne Vanderwert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current and somewhat controversial trend in swine selection is in the direction of a larger framed, later maturing animal. One goal of producers in changing to this type of animal is to produce a hog with more marketing flexibility, that is, a hog that may be carried to heavier weights without becoming over fat or that could be marketed at lighter weights and produce a very lean, muscular carcass. Excess fat is an unnecessary product in the meat animal industry that is expensive to produce from a feed efficiency standpoint. Research discussed later clearly indicated that changes in feed …
