Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and the lack of effective treatment options is an unmet clinical need for stroke survivors. Ischemic stroke-induced oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) in the affected brain tissue leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) depletion in the brain endothelial cells (BECs) lining the blood-brain barrier (BBB). ATP deprivation in the BECs dysregulates actin cytoskeleton dynamics, resulting in BBB breakdown. Restoration of blood flow (i.e., reperfusion) upon the first-line stroke treatment further leads to BBB breakdown and widens the paracellular spaces between BECs. …

Macromolecules occupy up to 30% of a cell's volume, yet the in vitro study of biological processes is almost exclusively performed in dilute solutions that fail to approximate the crowded interior of a cell. A growing body of literature has identified that macromolecular crowding has significant effects on a number of biochemical processes, including enzymatic activity. However, changes in kinetic parameters with increased macromolecule concentrations have only been determined for enzymes that follow hyperbolic Michaelis-Menten kinetics, despite the fact that over 25% of enzymes deviate from this model. This dissertation argues that access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of environmental justice. It critiques existing communication and rhetorical scholarship for overlooking the environmental dimensions of water access and justice. This gap hinders progress toward equity for marginalized communities disproportionately burdened by water insecurity.

This project proposes a communication approach that prioritizes culturally relevant strategies to empower these communities in advocating for their environmental rights and health needs. The present study aimed to investigate the place of the sibling in narratives of developmental trauma as well as the sibling relationship’s impact on the formation of sense of self. Another area of interest was the impact of congruence versus incongruence in the narrative between siblings. Ascidians can be classified as either solitary or colonial organisms. Species delimitation using morphological characters alone has had varied results. Well known, widely distributed, morphological species have turned out to be catch all species comprised of several cryptic species. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a double stranded DNA virus that replicates within the nucleus of host cells. Using accelerated native isolation of proteins on nascent DNA (aniPOND), cellular proteins were found to associate with HSV-1 replication forks. One host factor of interest is proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), the DNA sliding clamp that tethers DNA polymerases and DNA damage response proteins to replicating cellular DNA. Although HSV-1 encodes its own DNA polymerase processivity factor (UL42), PCNA plays a key role in HSV-1 infection. In tropical wet forests where fire is rare, lightning and branchfalls are common disturbances that create canopy gaps with associated large amounts of localized dead wood. Background. Shame and self-criticism are mechanisms shown to influence eating disorders (EDs). Self-compassion has been theorized to target shame and self-criticism and is a protective factor against EDs. One intervention shown to increase self-compassion and reduce shame and self-criticism is the Mindful Self-Compassion program (MSC). However, MSC has yet to be tested among individuals with an ED diagnosis. The current study investigated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of MSC delivered in a live, online format among individuals with an ED. Methods.
