The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser

One of the conclusions of anthropologists is that of cultural variability and the relativity of value systems. This means that the designs for living with its system of moral values which one society has evolved may differ considerably from those of another. Each society has their unique value system (moral code). The Dakota Indians have (or had) theirs and the people of Western civilization have theirs. As a result of the culture contact of these two groups over the past seventy-five years, the Dakota Indian has been exposed to, even coerced to follow, a value system different than his own. …

Peering into the tomes of history in an attempt to better comprehend the American mind during this critical period of our history, the author has encountered many conflicting and ambiguous statements. But by comparing these opinions and by a detailed study of original sources the author has endeavored to reach logical grounds for his reasoning. The opinions here offered agree with those of others used, but only because the author through diligent study has arrived at like conclusions. That his own historical integrity has not been jeopardized by his faith in others is the author's sincere hope.

The artist, whether he was novelist, poet, painter or essayist, was caught in the maelstrom of violence and destruction that was World War I. Conscription was employed in most nations participating in the War and the artist, with his accurate, discerning eye and his sensitivity, was destined to report the War as he actually saw it unfold before him. A great part of the creative activity these artists engaged in was an analysis and reportage of the years from 1914, to 1918. Before the Armistice had been signed on November 11, 1918, Henri Barbusse had published his indictment of war, …

While the writer was an undergraduate he spent two Summers in the Panamint mountains above Death Valley, California. Hiking with one of the few old-timers remaining in that region he noticed that "the old desert rat" would stoop occasionally to pick up certain rocks which he would examine closely. Some went into a pouch he carried. They were later crushed and "panned." If they made a "showing" in the gold-pan, the prospector would retrace his steps and arduously search for the parent vein.
