On The Electric Field Of Moving Magnets, Ronald Harvey Wilson Feb 1958

On The Electric Field Of Moving Magnets, Ronald Harvey Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following study arose from the discussion of a problem in a course in theoretical physics at South Dakota State College during the Winter quarter 1956-1957. The problem is stated as follows: “A symmetrically magnetized cylindrical magnet is rotating with constant angular velocity about its axis of symmetry. A straight wire at right angles to and in the plane of the axis of the magnet is arranged so that it can be rotated about the same axis. Is there an e.m.f. along the wire (a) when it is at rest, (b) when it is rotating with the magnet? Explain why.” …

Locker And Shower Room Facilities Used For Physical Education At South Dakota State College, Peter Dominic Torino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of the existing locker and shower room facilities for physical education at South Dakota State College. At present, there is little or no information covering this topic, and at the same time there is a possibility that such information could be most useful and important. South Dakota State College at present requires at least one year of physical education for all students. With the present load and the predicted increased enrollment, will the facilities be able to handle the increase, and are they now adequate to handle their present load? It is the purpose of this …

The Feasibility Of Organizing A Federation Of Egg Marketing Cooperatives In Eastern South Dakota, Walter R. Swanson Feb 1958

The Feasibility Of Organizing A Federation Of Egg Marketing Cooperatives In Eastern South Dakota, Walter R. Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several egg marketing groups in the Midwest have become increasingly aware of the need for greater efficiency. These marketing agencies have attempted to eliminate the several middlemen in the channel between local levels and the distant markets. Basically this development is an attempt to reduce the marketing costs and quality loss resulting from excessive handling. It has not been possible for every marketing agency to capitalize on this development. Only those agencies capable of providing large volumes of eggs and diversified marketing services have succeeded. This development has been of interest to the larger marketing agencies in South Dakota. Recently, …

Pondermotive Forces Of Electrical Origin In Liquid Dielectrics, Norma Allan Peppers Feb 1958

Pondermotive Forces Of Electrical Origin In Liquid Dielectrics, Norma Allan Peppers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For years the expression for the force per unit volume which arises in a liquid dielectric as a result of an electric field has been a source of discussion and controversy. Several different expressions for this volume force occur in the literature and, of these, two seem to be most prominent. Each of the expressions has many supporters. Consequently, there has been much theoretical and some experimental work concerning volume forces in a liquid dielectric. Although the most recent writers apparently have dispelled much of the mystery which has long shrouded this topic, some questions remain unanswered. Moreover, since history …

The Relationships Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of A South Dakota Rural-Nonfarm Community's Older Population, Denton E. Morrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Declining health, loss of physical vigor and the increased probability of death are conditions to which the aged of all societies must adjust. In addition, many older citizens in American society must face unique problems including the termination of gainful employment; reduced income; isolation through death or removal of family, friends, peers; increased periods of indolence; and a decreasing standard of living. Moreover, later life with its attendant complex of problems now faces more people in this country than ever before. The problems of older citizens in American society have therefore become the focus of considerable public attention in recent …

Acreage Response Of South Dakota Wheat Producers To Expected Price Changes, 1955, Richard Hoyt Kruse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prices have long been considered to be an important factor influencing agricultural production. The diversity of views as to the effectiveness of prices in allocating resources in agriculture has served to emphasize the need for further research on this problem. South Dakota is primarily an agricultural state and is vitally concerned with the problem of adjustment. Geographic and economic conditions in South Dakota are widely different from other parts of the nation. This study was undertaken in order that legislators and other policy makers might have access to more research results in formulating future agricultural policies. The purpose of this …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In light of the accepted benefits derived from participation in the intramural sports program, educators and physical educators are quite concerned about the present status of intramural sports and are seeking means for the improvement of intramural sports. This can be done by scrutinizing the intramural sports program in two intercollegiate athletic conferences and discovering ways and means of improvement. They are also aware of the great contribution, which the intramural sports program presents, if properly organized and administered. There is always a constant alertness to the various trends and forces which contribute to the intramural sports program. It is …

The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser Jan 1958

The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the conclusions of anthropologists is that of cultural variability and the relativity of value systems. This means that the designs for living with its system of moral values which one society has evolved may differ considerably from those of another. Each society has their unique value system (moral code). The Dakota Indians have (or had) theirs and the people of Western civilization have theirs. As a result of the culture contact of these two groups over the past seventy-five years, the Dakota Indian has been exposed to, even coerced to follow, a value system different than his own. …

An Electronic Fluid Flow Analyzer For Pipeline Networks, Harold Charles Falk Jan 1958

An Electronic Fluid Flow Analyzer For Pipeline Networks, Harold Charles Falk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To the engineer dealing with fluid flow in distribution networks such as urban water distribution systems, the study of flow and pressure throughout the system is a complex problem involving tedious calculations unless some sort of analogue aid is given him. The McIlroy Fluid Network Analyzer, devised in 1948 by the late Malcolm S. McIlroy, Professor of Electrical Engineering at Cornell University, has been an invaluable aid to the person investigating this problem of fluid network analysis. This analyzer, however, is quite expensive, and it seems quite likely that a more inexpensive analyzer can be developed using a somewhat different …

The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen Jan 1958

The Effects Of Relaxin On The Composition Of Bovine Milk, Chris H. Nissen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protoplasm is a fragile substance keeping its homeostatic properties by many physiochemical phenomena. Much is known about the properties of protoplasm; but it is, perhaps, only meager when compared to what is yet to be learned. Such physical changes as electrical impulses, diffusion, and oxidation – to mention a few – are necessary for protoplasm to retain its integrity. In higher animals, particularity, for our purpose, mammals, protoplasm is sustained by different body system working harmoniously together to supply raw materials that remove waste, and govern all endeavors. One should not infer that single called animals have a more simple …

Raw Sewage Stabilization Ponds As A Means Of Sewage Treatment, John Robert Anderson Jan 1958

Raw Sewage Stabilization Ponds As A Means Of Sewage Treatment, John Robert Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The successful operation of sewage stabilization ponds by a number of North and South Dakota communities during the past few years has shown this method of disposal to be adequate in taking care of the needs of small communities. Since land is relatively cheap compared to construction work involved in the building of a sewage treatment plant, and since the actual construction cost of a stabilization pond I s a comparatively small figure, this type of treatment has been readily accepted by the smaller communities. Because stabilization ponds are primarily successful due to solar radiation and vary according to climatic …

A Comparison Of The Achievement Records Of A United States History Class Taught By Socialized Methods And A United States History Class Taught By The Lecture-Question Method, Kenneth S. Hauge Jan 1958

A Comparison Of The Achievement Records Of A United States History Class Taught By Socialized Methods And A United States History Class Taught By The Lecture-Question Method, Kenneth S. Hauge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The basic problem confronting all teachers is how to help each student develop himself to full capacity, mentally and socially. Lack of student interest is often an important factor in the consideration of poor school records. This lack of interest is especially apparent in such courses as government and history. Various educators have suggested improved methods of instruction as one answer to this problem. Proponents of socialized recitation claim that the emphasis must be taken from the teacher and placed on the pupils. They believe that attitudes developed through study and classroom procedures are more important than the acquisition of …

The Moral Order Of William Faulkner, Shirley Lease Kay Jan 1958

The Moral Order Of William Faulkner, Shirley Lease Kay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to indicate William Faulkner’s belief in a moral order and then to show how this may be taught in the novel Light in August. I believe that there is more to Faulkner that “the agony and the rhetoric” and that his works are not merely” [tales] told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, and signifying nothing.” By considering our questions, I hope to establish the type of moral order in which Faulkner believes. These questions are (1) What is Faulkner’s attitude toward nature? (2) What is evil to him? (3) How does …

Age And Growth Determination Of The Black Bullhead From Soft Fin Rays, James W. Sprague Jan 1958

Age And Growth Determination Of The Black Bullhead From Soft Fin Rays, James W. Sprague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Knowledge of the age of individuals comprising populations of fish is essential to the fishery biologist. From such information he is able to calculate the rate of growth, determine the age at which sexual maturity is attained and the longevity of the species. These calculations and determinations can be applied in the management of populations and in setting fishery regulations. There are numerous methods being used to determine the age of an individual fish. Of these, the scale method is the most important means of age determination being utilized with species of fish possessing scales (Cooper, 1951). This method …

Student Automobiles On The College Campus, Lois Elaine Qualben Jan 1958

Student Automobiles On The College Campus, Lois Elaine Qualben

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two slightly related developments in recent years have greatly affected the general character of American college and university life: the great increase in enrollments, and the widespread student possession of luxuries while in college. Since much attention has been given to the effect of increased enrollments, the writer feels that the influence of the extensive possession of luxuries on the scholastic achievement merits examination. In this study, the writer intends to look at an increasingly common factor in college life—the possession of automobiles by college students and to see what, if any, significance it bears as a deterrent from study. …
