The Effect Of Heat On The Resistance Of Varnish., Leonard C. Brecher 1900- May 1922

The Effect Of Heat On The Resistance Of Varnish., Leonard C. Brecher 1900-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Varnish and its use has been known since ancient times. Altho the knowledge of varnish has been attributed to the Japanese as early as 500-600 B.C., Tschirsch and A.D. Stevens say that the Japs did not possess this art originally, but that they probably acquired it from the continent during the third century. Nevertheless, varnish did not come into general use until the middle ages. In the 12th century, a monk by the name of Theophilus published the first directions for making an oil varnish, but it was not until 1790 in England, and between 1820 and 1830 in France …

A Study In Professional Ethics., Lewis William Dockery May 1922

A Study In Professional Ethics., Lewis William Dockery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Professional ethics does not differ in its essential nature from general ethics; both are concerned with problems of human conduct. The difference between the two is a difference of scope but not of nature. The scope of general ethics is as broad as the purposive acts of rational persons, while the scope of professional ethics is limited to the purposive acts of lawyers, physicians, teachers, clergymen, and other professional persons. The former includes all normal persons irrespective of their vocations; the latter includes only persons who are in professional life. Professional ethics takes the field of general ethics for granted; …

A History Of Ohio River Trade At Louisville From Its Beginning Until 1840., John Edward Heller May 1922

A History Of Ohio River Trade At Louisville From Its Beginning Until 1840., John Edward Heller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dominant theme in the study of any phase of Ohio River history is found in the great extent of the river system and the vast area of the drainage basin of the Mississippi to which this stream forms so important a part. The basin of the Mississippi, as has been aptly said, is the "Body of the Nation," all other parts of the nation being but members, important in themselves, yet more important in their relation to this.(1) In extent it is the second great valley of the world, being exceeded only by that of the Amazon.(2) In a …

Courtly Love In Shakespeare's Sonnets And Plays., Rebbie Doty May 1921

Courtly Love In Shakespeare's Sonnets And Plays., Rebbie Doty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"It is in the south of France and at a very early period that we must look for the origin of the system of Courtly Love. Gathered about several small courts, there existed, as early as the eleventh century, a brilliant society, in which woman held the supreme place, and in which, under her influence, vast importance was attached to social etiquette and decorum. Definite rules governed the sexes in all their relations, and especially in matters of love. It was to this society that the troubadours belonged, and it was love, chiefly that was the inspiration of their songs. …

History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden May 1921

History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the one hundred and forty years of Louisville's existence, it has grown from a log cabin settlement with no churches to a city with 269 churches and church property valued at over $30,000,000. It is impossible to measure the moral and religious force that they have exerted on the city. It can best be appreciated when one thinks of what the city would be without them. Few of us would care to live in such a city. In the field of education, Louisville churches have contributed much. Some of the first schools in the city were conducted by ministers, …

The Relation Between Man And Nature In Wordsworth's Poetry., Elizabeth Hoskins May 1921

The Relation Between Man And Nature In Wordsworth's Poetry., Elizabeth Hoskins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While democracy was developing, while men were seeking to reform national politics and to find some means by which the people might be represented justly in the government, a new movement entered into literature to give it a broadened scope and a deepened meaning. This was the philosophical movement, at times strongly influenced by a metaphysical spirit, which often "not only prescribed the form of poetry, but furnished it with its elements". (Taine, History of English Literature, p.87). The questions, What is the meaning of life? What is man, and what is his purpose in the world? turned the thoughts …

Early Kentucky Intrigues Regarding The Mississippi River., Henri Reubelt Pearcy 1894-1987 Apr 1920

Early Kentucky Intrigues Regarding The Mississippi River., Henri Reubelt Pearcy 1894-1987

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper is involved in a study of the intrigues of Kentuckians for the securing of the Mississippi River as a free waterway for the marketing of their produce and the consequent improvement of the condition of Kentuckians in every way. The conspiracies of such men as Blount and Burr have not been included because there was no real and vital connection of Kentuckians with their schemes. The intrigues of Wilkinson after the Spanish treating of 1795 were not involving Kentucky peculiarly but rather the Southwest, and they would not be properly included here. Evidence of complicity in intrigues on …

The Organic Phosphorus Compounds Of Wheat Bran., J. Howard Mueller May 1914

The Organic Phosphorus Compounds Of Wheat Bran., J. Howard Mueller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A growing interest has manifested itself within the past two or three years in "phytin" and "phytic acid", and in some of the compounds of the latter. Posternak first isolated this substance from the seeds of the red fir, pumpkin, pea, bean, white and yellow lupine and potato. Patten and Hart obtained the substance from wheat bran, and Hart and Tottingham found it in corn meal, oats and barley. The organic phosphorus materials obtained by alcoholic precipitations of aqueous or dilute acid extracts from these various sources are not identical, but ultimate analyses show a fair degree of similarity. Thus …

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft May 1913

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first effective impulse to a systematic investigation of the chemistry of food was given by Liebig some fifty years ago. The earliest quantitative analyses of food materials which we have found are those of potatoes reported by George Pearson in England, 1795. In 1805, Einhoff made similar analyses of potatoes. He also determined several of the constituents of the ash. Liebig and his associates Playfair, Boeckman and others, in the latter half of the last century, made analyses of foods using methods similar to those now in use. It is interesting to observe how accurate many of their results …

Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee May 1912

Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Having been born and brought up in China, an empire, where the people are utterly ignorant of the vital importance of a good system of public water supply, and having decided to take chemistry as my profession, I feel intensely interested in the examination of water for the purpose of convincing our people in the far east to pay proper attention to sanitation on a chemical basis. The average life period there has been roughly estimated to be thirty years, and we have now in the Middle Kingdom a population of 450,000,000. It means in each century we have approximately …

This experiment was performed by the use of a Spectrometer using the customary methods of measurements usually adopted for this work. Method "A" The telescope having a Gaussian eyepiece attachment, the telescope's cross-hairs are illuminated and reflected upon the two plane faces of a prism in succession. The angle through which the telescope is turned between the first and second face equals 180 degrees – A, where A is the angle of the prism. Method "B" The Collimator so placed that the slit is illuminated by a flame it falls upon both faces, being divided by the edge of the …

The School Garden From An Educational View Point., Emilie Yunker May 1911

The School Garden From An Educational View Point., Emilie Yunker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"School gardens are not intended to create gardeners or farmers but to afford the growing boy or girl an opportunity for many aided developments." In the school garden the children are taught by one who can inspire them with a love not only for plants, but for everything else that has life and grows to take care of trees, lawns, flowers, vegetables and such things planted with their own hands. It is a place where the plants together with their friends and enemies have an intimate relation to the child personally; where the lessons are far more vital than anything …

The Early Missionary Work Of The French Jesuits In North America., Edward Thomas Poulson May 1909

The Early Missionary Work Of The French Jesuits In North America., Edward Thomas Poulson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are perhaps but few passages in history that are more striking than those which tell of heroic efforts of the early French Jesuits to convert the Indians of North America. Many of these efforts are full of dramatic and philosophic interest, and they also bear strongly upon the political destinies of America. While the small young colonies of England still clung feebly to the shores of the Atlantic, events, almost wholly unknown to them, that would eventually have great bearing upon their future, were in progress in the very heart of the continent, the main participants being the French …

The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown Jan 1896

The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: It is an undeniable fact that civilized nations are drifting towards socialism. Whether we reach the goal of ideal and theoretic socialists at last, or stop short of socialism in its modern accepted meaning it is not the purpose of this work to investigate. Socialism is of recent origin. It was started less than seventy years ago in France. The progress that it has made is worthy of some attention. It has spread to all civilized nations and has won many earnest supporters in England, France Germany and the United States. A great deal of confusion results from the …
