Factors Contributing To And Affecting The Cellulose Digestibility Of Pelleted Roughage, John Russell Jahn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transition to the pelleting of natural feeding materials has produced many problems. Various opinions have been expressed by the investigators regarding possible solutions to these problems. The proper mechanical formation of the pellet or wafer has been studied by several investigators. Several necessary factors have been determined. The temperature ranges that will produce the best possible product, from a feeding standpoint, have been tested against various pressures. The fineness of grinding or chopping have also been considered, as they relate to the digestibility and economy of the finished product. Moisture and adhesive agents have been considered in determining what …
Derivation Of The Equation For The Instantaneous Diffusion Current At The Cylindrical Drop Mercury Electrode, Prodromos Xenides
Derivation Of The Equation For The Instantaneous Diffusion Current At The Cylindrical Drop Mercury Electrode, Prodromos Xenides
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The photographic method of analysis, introduced in 1922 by Professor J. Heyrovsky, is dependent upon electrolysis at the dropping electrode of the solution being analyzed. The method is based on interpreting current voltage curves that are obtained when solutions of electro reducible or electro oxidisable substances are electrolyzed in a cell in which one electrode consists of mercury falling drop-wise from a very fine capillary glass tube and the4 other electrodes is a pool of mercury. The circuit shown in Fig 1, is one used in the polarographic method of analysis. It consists of an accurate slide wire in which …
Variations In Motor Fitness Resulting From Calisthenic Exercises, Donald R. Hilsendager
Variations In Motor Fitness Resulting From Calisthenic Exercises, Donald R. Hilsendager
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Motor fitness development of high school students by the use of various physical activities has been of major interest to physical educators for many years and has received national interest in recent years. Ray Weiss reported 13 Unites States army officers present at the Third Annual Physical Fitness Institute expressed grave concern regarding our schools’ responsibilities in fitness. Carl A. Troeater Jr. had this to say about the present day felt need for fitness: “Few educators need to be convinced of the importance of fitness in our youth. For the past ten years, a deluge of newspaper and magazine articles …
Follow-Up Study Of High School Graduates From The West Lyon Community School District, George Alton Hillberg
Follow-Up Study Of High School Graduates From The West Lyon Community School District, George Alton Hillberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
School reorganization was a point of intense interest in and about the communities of Alvord, Inwood, Larchwood, and Lester, Iowa during the year of 1956, 1957, and 1958. In the summer of 1958, an election was held and the communities and surrounding farm areas mentioned above voted to become one school district. The school administration and the school board of education decided to add, along with other new services, a guidance and counseling program in an effort to provide a more rounded education for the more than one thousand students residing within the reorganized territory. The writer of this study …
Strength And Physical Fitness Of Rural Versus Urban Boys As Determined By The Rogers Physical Fitness Index, James L. Welton
Strength And Physical Fitness Of Rural Versus Urban Boys As Determined By The Rogers Physical Fitness Index, James L. Welton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The farm family has been recognized by many as a hardy lot who could endure a hard life and strenuou8s labor. On the other hand, city people have thought of as being weaker because of a life less demanding. In the past it has been accepted generally that the rural boy was superior to the urban boy in over-all physical strength. The rural boy has been stereotyped as a big, muscular individual with a strong back and weak mind. The town boy, on the other hand, has seldom been considered as an exceptionally strong individual. Throughout the years the farm …
A Study Of Seventh Grade Problems Compiled Into A Check List, Catherine Thurston
A Study Of Seventh Grade Problems Compiled Into A Check List, Catherine Thurston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transaction from the sixth to the seventh grade for the early adolescent has been a long recognized problem. Various schools have tried different methods to make it smooth and more pleasant since this is a critical period physically, emotionally, and socially because of the changes taking place within the individual. The curriculum has been changed and shaped around the needs of the early adolescent. Recent courses in guidance and years of experience in teaching have pointed out the fact clearly that the early adolescence has many concealed problems with which they are wrestling, and from which they seek relief. …
Changes In Cardiovascular Condition Resulting From An Eight Week Training Program As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Merle L. Foss
Changes In Cardiovascular Condition Resulting From An Eight Week Training Program As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Merle L. Foss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effect of different activities and conditioning exercises on the cardiovascular system has been the basis for many recent studies by physical educators and physiologists. No doubt much of this research has been prompted by statements such as that by Reidman, “An athlete is only as good as his heart.” Reidman reasoned that the ability of the athlete to perform work was dependent in large measure on the ability of the heart to supply oxygen to the muscles. This, in turn, was dependent upon two factors: (1) the capacity of exertion, and (2) the ability of the heart to return …
Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla
Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct water through its macro-pores is known as its permeability. Permeability should not be confused with infiltration, which is the term for expressing the absorption of water into the soil. The infiltration rate is the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. The rate at which water moves through soil is called the hydraulic conductivity; whereas a measurement of this same rate is used to calculate the permeability. Hydraulic conductivity is most commonly expressed in the units of velocity, whereas permeability is expressed as the square of …
Comparison And Relationship Between Reaction Time, Performance Time, And Balance Among Wrestlers And Physical Education Students In College, Glen R. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wrestling is a sport which involves the use of one’s strength, as well as the use of the body in many different positions. Previous research has shown that wrestling has been found to aid in the improvement of body balance. The question is often asked,” Does a good wrestler have quick reaction and performance time?” The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between reaction time, performance time, and balance among wrestlers and physical education students at South Dakota State College. Sub-problems: to administer the bass stepping stone fest for dynamic balance and the bass lengthwise and crosswise …
The Chemical Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Blood Sugar, Linda Kay Rames
The Chemical Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Blood Sugar, Linda Kay Rames
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The passage of nuclear radiations through materials may cause chemical and physical changes in these materials. Particles of ionizing radiation pass some or all of their energy to the electrons of the material and thus cause ionization or excitations. Because of the significance of water in biological and chemical systems, its decomposition by nuclear radiation has been studied. Processes of ionization and excitation cause the formation of the free radicals (H) and (OH) from pure water. These may react to form H2O2. In a biological system the effects of ionizing radiation on H2O may ultimately result in cellular disturbances. For …

A Comparative Analysis Of Performance By The Madelia Public School Students On The Kraus-Weber Test And The Aahper Fitness Test, Donald Ray Nehowig
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Physical fitness has always been an important part of an athletic program, and it has always been highly regarded for our servicemen during war years. But people who were concerned with our overall fitness brought out the fact that this fitness decreases markedly after an athletic season and after a war. This report by Dr. Kraus attired our nation’s leaders to such an extent that President Eisenhower created a council on Youth Fitness and had numerous meetings to discuss the fitness problem and how it could be improved. The American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation joined in the …
A Free-Field Pure-Tone Hearing Screening Test, Robert E. Litke
A Free-Field Pure-Tone Hearing Screening Test, Robert E. Litke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
South Dakota state college requires hearing test as part of a physical examination for all entering freshmen. The purpose of the test is to discover students with a significant hearing loss. The test, administered by the college’s speech department, has been part of the examination program since 1952. A word intelligibility test was administered from a tape recording which was played to all entering freshmen through loudspeakers. There was evidence that this test, though it could be efficiently administered, did not discover students with highly significant hearing losses. Problems with earlier tests spurred the search for a more efficient instrument. …
Mathematical Analysis And Evaluation Of The Law Of Corresponding States For Real Gases, Simion C.Y. Kuo
Mathematical Analysis And Evaluation Of The Law Of Corresponding States For Real Gases, Simion C.Y. Kuo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The science of thermodynamics deals mainly with the eight thermodynamical properties of substances (usually in gas or vapor state). The relation of P-V-T of a substance is usually represented by the equation of state which, in general, can be expressed in the form f(P,V,T)= 0. The practical application of the law of corresponding states is generally accomplished in two different ways, namely, the generalized compressibility charts and the generalized equations of state. The mathematical analysis of the law of corresponding states is to be treated in this study. The law of corresponding states was first proposed by Van Der Waals …
The Relationship And Comparison Of Reaction Time Resulting From Visual, Tactile, And Auditory Stimuli, Systolic Pressure, Diastolic Pressure, And Pulse Rate Among Members Of A Track Squad And Members Of Physical Education Classes, Douglas E. Berg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Considerable research has been conducted on reaction time, blood pressure, and pulse rate in an attempt to determine their relationship to athletic performance. Slightly above average blood pressure and low pulse rate within normal limits are considered by present-day coaches to be desirable characteristics of an athlete. In sports and games in which movements of a participant are conditioned by signals, by movements of opponents, or by motion of the ball, reaction time is also of great importance. Studies which closely represent the findings of many other investigators concerning pulse rate are those by Cotton and White. Each observed unusually …
The Relationship Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of Residents Of Homes For Aged In Eastern South Dakota, Darlien G. Klug
The Relationship Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of Residents Of Homes For Aged In Eastern South Dakota, Darlien G. Klug
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To say that the problems of aging are universal, touching all of all culture at one time or another, appears to be something of a truism. Yet, short of birth and death, scarcely any part of the pattern of living affects all mankind to so great degree. With added years come decrease in physical vigor, declining health, and increased imminence of death- all conditions to which the aging must adjust. In American society these problems are particularly acute, largely because of the predominantly urban and industrial character of our culture. In South Dakota, particularly, growing numbers of elder citizens give …
The Production And Ingestion Of Antibodies In Milk, George Donald Marx
The Production And Ingestion Of Antibodies In Milk, George Donald Marx
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since biblical times man has depended upon the cow for nourishment. The cow’s contribution to human and animal welfare has been tremendous. These contributions may be increased by artificially producing antibodies in milk. In view of recent experiments the established theory that antibodies cannot pass the intestinal wall after the animal is a few days of age may not be true. Much information has been gathered to support this theory. Since the mammary gland is capable of producing a considerable quantity of antibodies and since antibodies inhibit disease, the milk should be an excellent source of antibodies for disease protection …

A Study Of Selected Factors Related To Level Of Living On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Joseph F. Powers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The eager spread of Western society with its insatiable desire for new lands and raw materials has brought with it an exposure to cultures often diametrically opposed to western concepts and attitudes. As contact with alien cultures was made, resistance to plans for “progress” was often experienced and the “primitive” peoples were judged to be irrational savages. The westward advance of our fore-father is written across the pages of history in the bold of the American Indians. “When our ancestors landed on this continent they first fell upon their knees and then upon the aborigines.” Needless to say, the Indian …

Study Of Dietaries And Nutritional Status Of Adolescent Indian Girls In Boarding Schools Of The Dakotas, Margaret I. Talcott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The adolescent period is recognized as a crucial one in the development of individuals. This study is centered on the nutritional status of girls who are in this stage of development. Cooperative regional studies by experiment stations and school lunch studies in several states have covered many phases of nutritional status for various population groups in recent years. Investigators agrees that there is need for further information in regard to the dietary practices and nutritional status of adolescents, and there appears to be the greatest concern with respect to adolescent girls. The average annual birth rate for Indians in the …
The Attitudes Of South Dakota State College Women Students Toward Physical Education, Peggy Meister Foss
The Attitudes Of South Dakota State College Women Students Toward Physical Education, Peggy Meister Foss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Physical educators are concerned not only with the teaching of specific skills but also with the development of democratic values, character and favorable attitudes toward one’s problems, work, competitors and co-workers. These values and attitudes underline behavior and personality development and are acquired through interaction with others. This involves the learning process as well as the subject matter taught. Sometimes instructors place too much emphasis upon subject matter and too little upon the learning process. The learning process may be characterized, in part, by Thorndike’s laws of learning. He has stated that students learn best when they are physically and …

Some Limnological Conditions Relative To Winter Kill Of Fish In Ice-Covered Representative Farm Ponds In Eastern South Dakota, Jerome L. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An aquatic environment involves many complex relationships biologically, physically, and chemically. Many of these relationships are difficult to measure or are little understood. In nature, aquatic environments accommodate many types of aquatic life. Ecological disturbances may cause the environment to become unfit for economically important forms of life. Human interferences often causes polluted waters and naturally occurring disturbances are common. A disturbance of this kind is one of the major problems of fisheries management in the northern Great Plains area – seasonal anaerobosis of fish or other aquatic animals and plants, commonly known as winter kill. Winter kill is usually …

Economic And Organizational Aspects Of Cooperative Feedyards, Harlan J. Dirks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the past few years the cattle feeding industry in the United States has undergone many physical, technological changes. One of the most noticeable changes has been the growth of commercial and large-scale cattle feeding operations. Practically all of these beef factories are located on the west coast and other states in the southwest. States where most of the commercial and large-scale feeding is done include: California, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, and Nebraska. In California, for example, 68 per cent of the cattle on feed are fed in lots of over 10,000 head. There are a number of reasons …
