A Microchemical Modification Of The Mccarthy And Sullivan Method For The Determination Of Methionine, Emilia Rodelas Joson
A Microchemical Modification Of The Mccarthy And Sullivan Method For The Determination Of Methionine, Emilia Rodelas Joson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Methionine was discovered in 1922 by Mueller (33) and was first known as Mueller’s acid. In 1928 Barger and Coyne (6) found that it was a methylated sulfur compound known as alpha-amino-gamma-methyl thio-butryic acid and later gave it the present shorter name of methionine. Rose and his associates (34) have shown that it is the essential sulfur amino acid and not cysteine as was formerly thought. Methionine plays an important role in the growth of plants and animals: first, as a methylating agent; second, as an amino acid essential for the building of tissue proteins; third, as a source of …

The Effectiveness Of College Home Economics For Family Living, Imogene Van Overschelde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Education in general purposes to widen one’s horizon and to give a deeper understanding and enrichment of what has already been experienced and to provide new experiences. College education should be so organized that it can be used later. Curriculum planning and evaluation has been an important part of the education program. Many colleges and universities have launched self-evaluation studies in an effort to appraise and improve their home economics program, that it may be a very real preparation for home and family living. Spafford states: The achieving of a satisfying and functioning philosophy of life with emphasis of personal …

Temperature Conditions Existing In A Diffusion Type Cloud Chamber, Vance D. Vandervelde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are many types of detectors of radioactive rays, such as Geiger Counters, ionization chambers, photographic emulsions, electroscopes, and cloud chambers. Many of these give only information such as the amount of radiation or the minimum energy of the rays because the information is registered as a change in voltage or a “count”. Outstanding among the different kinds of detectors is the type commonly called “cloud chambers”. In a cloud chamber the path of the ray* can actually be seen and photographed, its radius of curvature in an electric or magnetic field can be measured, the amount of ionization can …

The less talented pupils are being eliminated from the schools and caused to meet adult problems without adequate preparation due to the unflexible definition entertained of what constitutes an education. Efforts to achieve a high level of scholarship have been causing schools to be more selective than they should according to the spirit of the public school laws. The discouraged low-ability pupil tends to drop out of school at a lower grade level than would have been necessary providing the school programs were more adaptable to the individual differences of pupils. Schools have had a tendency to attempt to prepare …

A Study Of The Practices And Procedures Prevailing In The Legion Government Day's Programs In Five South Dakota Schools During 1953, Philip R. Haskett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The project was adopted by the national American Legion in 1951; however, similar programs were in existence in a number of schools prior to that time. The approach to the problem has been unique in South Dakota. · Because it is sponsored by a state-wide organization, the American Legion, projects are round in the smaller as well as in the larger schools. The purpose of this study, then, is to determine the practices and procedures used in Legion Government Days' programs in five schools in this area of South Dakota. The programs which are the subject of this investigation originated …
Scheduling Of Extracurricular Activities In The Consolidated Schools Of South Dakota, Charles Webbenhurst
Scheduling Of Extracurricular Activities In The Consolidated Schools Of South Dakota, Charles Webbenhurst
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the State of South Dakota we have had well over fifty Consolidated Schools operating for the past several decades. There are many problems in connection with the operating of a Consolidated School. It is rather obvious that these schools must do comparatively well in most phases of activity to avoid undesirable criticism from outsiders as well as from the patrons of the local district. These consolidated schools should strive to do at least as good a job of educating the individual student as the neighboring non-consolidated schools do. This would include the extracurricular program of the consolidated school just …

A Survey Of The Status Of Conservation Education In Junior High Schools Of Eight Selected Counties In Northwest Iowa, John E. Voss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years the subject of conservation has acquired considerable importance throughout this country. The very nature of the problem has become so broad as to include nearly every facet of our daily lives. It has come to include human lives, consumer education, and production along with the more traditional areas of our natural resources such as forests, minerals, soil, and water. As with other contemporary topics, this subject has many implications for American education. It has becorr1e increasingly evident that if we are to maintain our present high standards of living, some effort in education has to be put …
A Comparative Study Of The Scholastic Ability Of South Dakota High School Seniors In Their Self-Selected Occupational Groups As Evidenced By The State-Wide Ace Test Results In 1952, Guy O. Karnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The major study was to discover the general character of fourteen selected groups from the high-school seniors of South Dakota who took the ACE tests and filled in the personal data in the Fall of 1952. Eleven of these groups were occupations; one group was those who indicated college academic majors; one group was made up of those boys and girls who put in some form of military service as their "tentative occupational choice," and the final one was composed of those boys and girls who gave no vocational choice. The median was used as the measure of central tendency …
Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson
Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem stated as a broad social question is : Has the Farm Ownership loan program been achieving its objectives of reducing farm tenancy and promoting security of tenure through family farm ownership? Available evidence indicates that the program may not have been very effective in reducing farm tenancy either nationally or in a high-tenancy area such as South Dakota where 53 percent of the farmers were tenants in 1940 . From its inception in 1937 through June 30, 1950, the Farm Ownership loan program made 58, 395 direct and insured loans in the United States. This figure compared with …
