The Effect Of Prescibed Weight Training On A Selected Group Of Varsity Basketball Players, Bernard Eugene Duffy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

n the field of physical education weight lifting has been regarded by many as not having a place in the program because of its hindrance to speed, reaction time, and flexibility in those training for athletics. In recent years it has been receiving more and more attention and experimentation as a supplement to the regular training program of those preparing for physical activities. In this study an effort has been made to observe any influence a program of weight lifting might have upon basketball players in training for the ensuing season. This effect was measured through the use of the …

Locker And Shower Room Facilities Used For Physical Education In Class "A" High Schools In South Dakota, Arthur T. Jansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a survey of the existing locker and shower room facilities for physical education in the larger high schools in South Dakota. The state of South Dakota does not require physical education in its public elementary or secondary schools, but leaders in the field are working toward a goal whereby physical education for all pupils from the first through the twelfth would be required. If such a requirement is made of the present school systems in South Dakota, will the schools be able to handle the increased load, and are they now adequately constructed to handle their present load? …

Time And Tide : A Study Of The Conflicting Concepts Of Time Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, R. Clyde Mccone Jan 1956

Time And Tide : A Study Of The Conflicting Concepts Of Time Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, R. Clyde Mccone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Indian peoples of the Americas, as well as non-literate peoples around the world, have been swept or are being swept from their cultural moorings by their contacts with ‘white’ civilization. These cultures, whose values center around permanence and patience, have been engulfed in an expanding social order which exalts change. Impelled by its time oriented concepts of progress, opportunity, profit, speed, and efficiency, civilization’s contacts with familizational cultures have been uprooting, breaking, and crushing. The problem of this study shall be to define the Dakota concept of time, to distinguish it from that of Western civilization, and to discover …

Present Practices In Grading Boys' Physical Education In Secondary Schools Of Minnesota, North Dakota, And South Dakota, Wayne E. Sinning Jan 1956

Present Practices In Grading Boys' Physical Education In Secondary Schools Of Minnesota, North Dakota, And South Dakota, Wayne E. Sinning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very little research has been done on grading in physical education. Most of the work on the subject is composed of methods and suggestions which authors have developed through their own experience. Very little has been done to determine the needs of the instructor in the classroom situation and to adopt procedures to these needs. These needs arise from many different forces at work affecting the methods the instructor uses. Some of these forces are present procedures, the status and credit given to physical education in the individual schools and the present philosophy of the instructors and school administrators. This …

Research On A Portable Floor Plate Brooder With Electric Heating Elements For Use In South Dakota, Virgil H. Flesher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A reduced profit margin in the poultry business has brought about the demand for more efficient methods of poultry farming. A savings of a few cents per bird on the cost of raising poultry may mean the difference between profit or loss. With this is mind an efficiency study was made of three types of electric brooders. Two of these types of brooders, the infra-red lamp and the conventional electric resistance type heating element and hover, are available commercially. The portable floor plate brooder with electric heating elements was constructed for research purposes in this study. These three brooders units …

The Effect Of Body Temperature Upon Accuracy In Performing Specific Motor Skills, Roger William Denker Jan 1956

The Effect Of Body Temperature Upon Accuracy In Performing Specific Motor Skills, Roger William Denker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was made to determine the effect of the body’s diurnal temperature variation upon accuracy in performing specific motor skills. The study involved the establishment of a basic temperature curve after which the subject was tested through a series of accuracy tests devised by the author. The subject for this study, for reasons of convenience, was the author. Use of such a small sample, however, is a limitation of the study. The subject was in good health and reasonably sound physical condition.

Consumption And Preference Patterns For Butter And Margarine In Two South Dakota Cities, Norman L. Rollag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Present quality standards for butter are based to a large extent on taste preferences of consumers which were assumed to exist a number of years ago. This study endeavored to gather additional evidence regarding consumer preferences for various flavors, texture and color qualities found in butter and the other fats and oils. This study also attempted to determine what influences personal characteristics (such as occupation, annual family income or factors associated with place of birth, national origin, rural or urban background, religious preferences, and age of respondent) had upon consumption of various spreads, especially butter and margarine. The major objectives …

Suitability Of South Dakota Locations For Straw Pulping Plants, Winston K. Ullman Jan 1955

Suitability Of South Dakota Locations For Straw Pulping Plants, Winston K. Ullman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An improved pulping process has been developed by the USDA which uses straw as the basic ingredient in the production of boxboard and corrugating paper. If a plant or plants using this pulping process could be built in the state, a use would have been found for a product produced by farmers that has very limited commercial value to them at present. The Northern Utilization Research Branch of the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, has been selected the Experiment Station of South Dakota State College to undertake a research contract to determine availability of surplus wheat, rye, and …

Condition Of Football Players During And After The Season As Indicated By Cardiovascular And Strength Tests, John Homer Englund Jan 1955

Condition Of Football Players During And After The Season As Indicated By Cardiovascular And Strength Tests, John Homer Englund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies of the physiological condition of athletes have furnished evidence indicating that strenuous and persistent activity modifies cardiovascular function and increases body strength. The modifications in cardiovascular function which come as a result of activity remain only as long as the activity continues. Further investigation was conducted in this study with specific attention given to the cardiovascular and strength modifications of football players during, immediately following, and several weeks after the season. This study utilized two previously validated cardiovascular tests: namely, the Harvard Step Test and the Carlson Fatigue Test. Roger’s strength test, which also has been previously validated, …

Pan Evaporation Measuremnts As A Criterion For Predicting The Irrigation Requirements For Various Crops, Niel A. Dimick Jan 1955

Pan Evaporation Measuremnts As A Criterion For Predicting The Irrigation Requirements For Various Crops, Niel A. Dimick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Measurement of evaporated water from various devices has assisted in determination of the evaporation losses from large storage reservoirs. Evaporation is a large consumer of open-reservoir stored water which is used for irrigation, municipalities, manufacturing and numerous other purposes. The use of evaporation pans for measuring the quantity of water evaporated produces better results for estimating the resource extent of our stored water. Precautionary steps can then be taken toward the possible occurrence of predicted water shortages. This is essentially the principle involved in determining the consumptive use of moisture by irrigated crops. Consumptive use is commonly referred to as …

Status Of The Curriculum And The Practices And Regulations Affecting It In The Four-Teacher High Schools Of South Dakota, George Webbenhurst Jan 1955

Status Of The Curriculum And The Practices And Regulations Affecting It In The Four-Teacher High Schools Of South Dakota, George Webbenhurst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the United States public education has been generally designated as a local responsibility rather than a state or federal function. The local community is also expected to contribute the greater share of the financial cost of operating the school. The school, being controlled locally, is designed to best meet the demands of the community it serves. This results in a certain amount of variance in the curriculums of the school of this country. A certain amount of similarity in the curriculums is due to the regulations imposed by state regulations and also, in cases of federal financial support, by …

A Study Of Psychorophilic Bacteria In Frozen Foods, Donald E. Pederson Jan 1955

A Study Of Psychorophilic Bacteria In Frozen Foods, Donald E. Pederson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The bacteria examined in this study are facultative psychrohiles, which have their origin in the mesophilic group. Different members of the group have their optimum growth at temperatures slightly below the mesophilic range, but will grow at temperatures ranging from below zero to 25 degrees C. they have become increasingly important with the advent of the frozen food industry. Their presence in frozen foods is often the cause of objectionable flavor, putrid odor, or unnatural appearance. In this respect they are as important to the homemaker to the scientist and industrialist. It was with the hope of adding to the …

Percent Of Blend Of Male Sterile And Male Fertile Corn Seed For Optimum Fertilization In Hybrid Corn At Two Locations In South Dakota, Gerhardt Walter Erion Jan 1955

Percent Of Blend Of Male Sterile And Male Fertile Corn Seed For Optimum Fertilization In Hybrid Corn At Two Locations In South Dakota, Gerhardt Walter Erion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cytoplasmic male sterility has become a factor in corn seed production during the past number of years. The advantage of male sterility is that the producer is saved the expense and trouble of detasseling in the single-cross and double-cross seed fields. It also could be an advantage in certified seed production in that it would eliminate the human error factor in the detasseling process. The disadvantage is that, at present, male sterile and male fertile seed must be mixed or blended to insure a kernel set when grown by the farmer. It is highly desirable that no seed go out …

The Effect Of Wrestling Training And Required Physical Education Upon The Physical Condition Of College Students As Determined By The Rogers Strength Test And The Harvard Step Test, Thomas Eugene Neuberger Jan 1955

The Effect Of Wrestling Training And Required Physical Education Upon The Physical Condition Of College Students As Determined By The Rogers Strength Test And The Harvard Step Test, Thomas Eugene Neuberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The improvement of athletics and physical education can only be brought about when the participating individuals strive to attain their optimum physical condition. There are numerous phases of physical condition. Some of the many functions of the human organism with which we are concerned when striving for optimum physical condition are: respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, and muscular. A student of physiology understands that all functions of the human body are equally vital to the maintenance of life and health. This statement is undoubtedly true. If we look at the field of physical education and athletics we see that certain functions of …

Discharge From A Sandpoint Well System For A Thin Aquifer In The Sioux River Area, Harold Holmen Jan 1955

Discharge From A Sandpoint Well System For A Thin Aquifer In The Sioux River Area, Harold Holmen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the principal sources of water for irrigation is the underground water stored beneath the surface of the earth. Various methods have been devised to extract this water so that it may be applied to growing crops in regions of inadequate rainfall. Near the Sioux River in Eastern South Dakota, ample water has been obtained at shallow depths to irrigate average sized fields in certain areas. A sandpoint well system, which consists of four or five sandpoints connected to a centrifugal pumping unit, is being used to remove the water from the ground and force it through a sprinkler …
