A History Of The Early Mining-Camp Newspapers, Lawrence County, South Dakota, Helen Morganti Feb 1962

A History Of The Early Mining-Camp Newspapers, Lawrence County, South Dakota, Helen Morganti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is concerned with the history of the once Indian-infested country of the Black Hills, which was invaded by the Whites with the lure of gold, and how it was recorded on a day-to-day basis by the early-day newspaper, which followed the gold seekers into the territory. The study brings out the fact that news, as such, was not the prime reason that the newsmen came to these wilds, ut rather that legal printing required under the Homestead law to file final-proof notices on the miners’ claims, and contest notices were the main incentive for the birth and often …

Social Distance Correlates: Religiosity, Education, And Personality, Jeanne C. Bigger Jan 1962

Social Distance Correlates: Religiosity, Education, And Personality, Jeanne C. Bigger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Equal access to social privileges for all men is a right that has been overtly defended in America, but a right which has not always been fully maintained in practice. Ethnicity has provided obstacles to harmonious intergroup relations when associated with prejudice. The church and the school have been expected to take the lead in combating intolerance, but investigations of the role of religiosity among prejudiced and tolerant subjects have raised a question as to the effectives of religious training. If the use made of religious belief is determined by the individual’s psychological needs, it may be that personality characteristics …

A Comparison Of The Use And Acceptance Of Phototypesetting With Other Typesetting Processes Among Commercial Publishers And University Presses, Mark F. Guldin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first objective of this study was to determine the degree of acceptance of the phototypesetting process among commercial publishers by comparing this process to the hot-metal and cold-type processes. Two immediate factors that would seemingly affect this acceptance would be the size of the publisher and whether or not the publisher operated his own composing room. The second objective was to determine to what degree acceptance of phototypesetting was influenced by the size of the publisher. The third objective was to determine to what extend acceptance was influenced by a composing room operating. The fourth objective was to discover …

A Comparison And Evaluation Of Graphic Arts Information Services, Richard D. Kast Jan 1962

A Comparison And Evaluation Of Graphic Arts Information Services, Richard D. Kast

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information storage and retrieval has become one of the major problems facing the graphic arts industry today. It is the main purpose of this study to determine if there may be a need for a “centralized” information service for the graphic arts industry. Perhaps there is this need if there are indications of overlapping, duplication, and diffusion of effort on the part of information centers now servicing the industry. This study will in no way attempt to show how such a service should be established due to the complexity of the undertaking. The ultimate objective is limited to determining if …

A Study Of Data-Processing Applications In The Printing Industry, Gyan P. Madan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The printing industry is one of the major industries of the nation and is expected to continue growing. However, the growth in the printing industry did not happen by itself. It came as a result of sound management decision-making techniques and other business tools. As the industry continues to grow, these tools will be needed more than ever. One such tool is the use of data-processing machines, referred to as computers. The overall objective of this investigation is to evaluate the subject of data-processing as a modern business tool which can provide printing management with more timely and usable reports …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to attempt to determine in what degree 10 of the nation’s “best” newspapers met their responsibility to spread knowledge deeply in their coverage of a leading story in Newburgh, NY. Newburgh’s city manager and council attempted to implement a 13-point welfare program that would require welfare recipients to collect their checks at a police station amongst other mandates. Critics argued that this unfairly targeted the black minority. One must question how responsible was press coverage of the Newburgh welfare story? For the purpose of this study, a period of two months was selected on …

This thesis developed a test for rating employees’ attitudes toward the printing industry. The attitude scale developed in this study was experimentally tested for its reliability and validity on the printers in Fresno, California. Fresno is an industrial and agricultural center, a city of dynamic population growth, …

A Cost Comparison And Profit Margin Study Of Six South Dakota Printing Firms In Five Major Population Areas, William H. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study should be helpful in suggesting various ways in which commercial printers in the general area of the plants studied might review their businesses by comparing cost figures, ratios, and profit margins wit firms in other states. From a thorough study of the material gathered from each plant, and by comparing costs and dollar volume, areas hitherto vaguely noticed as “leaks” in profit margin may be studied, and corrective measures taken. Six firms were chosen for this study from five of the larger cities in the state of South Dakota. A questionnaire was used in conjunction with on-site interviews. …
