Henry Whitestone : Nineteenth-Century Louisville Architect., Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Jones 1943- May 1974

Henry Whitestone : Nineteenth-Century Louisville Architect., Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Jones 1943-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Henry Whitestone (1819-1893) practiced architecture in the nineteenth century when the prevailing mode in architectural styles was a series of historical revivals. His work, with few exceptions, was entirely within the style of the Italian Renaissance Revival. The present study is an investigation of the historical styles he used and their probable sources, his place in the architectural milieu of the era and of Louisville, and a description of his life, his practice and his clients. In accomplishing these goals much new source material, heretofore unknown, has been used. Whitestone was extremely careful and exacting; he expected and received excellent …

Pheasant Reproduction And Survival As Related To Agricultural Fertilizer Use, Lawrence Francis Fredrickson Jan 1974

Pheasant Reproduction And Survival As Related To Agricultural Fertilizer Use, Lawrence Francis Fredrickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wing-clipped wild pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) were stocked in 1-acre and 0.5-acre pens having oat and bromegrass cover in 1972 and 1973 to test effects of fertilizer (Formulations: 34-0-0, 18-46-0, 0-46- 0, and 0-0-60) on pheasant reproduction and survival. One-half of the pens were fertilized with the recommended rate of pelleted fertilizer and the other half without fertilizer. Complete nest searches in July showed that nesting success was not significantly different (P>0.05) between treatments for both years. No significant difference (P>0.05) was found in clutch size or in number of ovulated follicles from control and experimental hens. Significantly more …

The Public Relations Efforts Of South Dakota Colleges And Universities As Reflected By The Attitudes Of South Dakota High School Seniors, Daniel F. Jorgensen Jan 1974

The Public Relations Efforts Of South Dakota Colleges And Universities As Reflected By The Attitudes Of South Dakota High School Seniors, Daniel F. Jorgensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study will concentrate on one small, yet vital, public--the public composed of high school seniors. If this public is "aware" of what the South Dakota colleges and universities have to offer, then the public relations programs of those schools are having some effect. If the students are preparing for a college career, then it is important to the future of the state's higher education that they are aware of the costs and the offerings of its schools. Daniel Gladstone, a high school senior from New Jersey, supported this thinking in a personal opinion column in "Saturday Review." He said …

Field Comparisons Of Hydraulic Conductivity Methods And Drainage Envelope Hydraulic Characteristics, David E. Kramer Jan 1974

Field Comparisons Of Hydraulic Conductivity Methods And Drainage Envelope Hydraulic Characteristics, David E. Kramer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is presently planning for the irrigation of approximately one-half million acres of land in the proposed Oahe Unit located in the north central part of the state. The main body of land in the Oahe Unit is the Lake Plain area which was once the lakebed of post-glacial Lake Dakota. Approximately one-fifth of the total cost of the project will be for drainage systems. The Bureau of Reclamation is responsible for the design of the Oahe project. They are presently using a transient drainage spacing equation developed by Glover in the design of the drainage system. The use …

Development Of A Control System For Positioning The Centerbody In A Choked Inlet, John Jacob Jibben Jan 1974

Development Of A Control System For Positioning The Centerbody In A Choked Inlet, John Jacob Jibben

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the introduction of high bypass ratio turbofan engines, the noise problem from aircraft shifted primarily from jet noise to noise of turbomachine origin. The present dominant noise source is the inlet noise generated by the first compressor stage (or the fan). Acoustic liners to reduce this noise have met with only limited success since the noise reduction to cost ratio is quite low. There are also many technical problems with acoustic liners that are not completely solved. Another method is by means of the choked inlet. This device simply accelerates the air to sonic velocities in the opposite direction …

Themes Expressed In The Rhetoric Of Two Women's Rights Movements, Ann Holt Logan Jan 1974

Themes Expressed In The Rhetoric Of Two Women's Rights Movements, Ann Holt Logan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout American history, the question of women's rights initiated a substantial body of rhetoric. The two most prominent women's rights movements seem to be the woman's suffrage movement from 1848 to 1920 and the current women's liberation movement. The recurrence of organized movements on the subject of women's equal rights raises the question whether the themes expressed in the rhetoric of each movement are similar. Therefore, the purpose in this investigation was to discover the extent to which speaking on behalf of women's rights by women utilized recurring themes. The two most prominent women's rights movements seem to be the …

Computerized Construction Of A Seasonal Flow-Duration Table, Gregory C. Meyer Jan 1974

Computerized Construction Of A Seasonal Flow-Duration Table, Gregory C. Meyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various graphical methods have been developed to handle the statistical data gathered for hydrological studies. Those most familiar are probably the hydrograph, the mass curve, and the flow-duration curve. The first two graphical techniques have been in use for numerous years and as a result, are described in many textbooks. The first published writings dealing with the flow-duration curve are believed to have been released in about 1878. However, the general use of the flow-duration curve started around the year 1915, but as late as 1934 it was felt that many of the fundamental principles of the flow-duration curve were …

Groundwater Quality In Water Supply Wells Surrounding The Sanitary Landfill At Brookings, South Dakota, David C. Odens Jan 1974

Groundwater Quality In Water Supply Wells Surrounding The Sanitary Landfill At Brookings, South Dakota, David C. Odens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1960, the city of Brookings, South Dakota began operating a solid waste disposal site in an abandoned gravel pit approximately two miles south of the city. Because the surrounding residences obtain their water supply from groundwater found in a shallow aquifer in the area, immediate concern was expressed about the effects of the sanity landfill of groundwater quality. In response to the objections to the refuse disposal site raised by-the people in the area, the city of Brookings initiated a study of groundwater quality at the site in 1960. Later, in 1964, a comprehensive study of the groundwater within …

A System To Measure Thermal Resistivity Of Soils, Steven F. Oakland Jan 1974

A System To Measure Thermal Resistivity Of Soils, Steven F. Oakland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A transient heat-flow, cylindrical-probe method for measuring thermal resistivity of &oils in situ is investigated. The theory of conduction of heat in a medium containing a cylindrical heat source is studied in detail. Effects of finite probe radius, length, and thermal conductivity are investigated and minimized. The effect of thermal contact-resistance at the probe surface is also studied. Errors in measurements of samples of finite dimensions are considered. An electronic system which uses the cylindrical-probe method to measure thermal resistivity of soils is described. Results are given for the use of the system in the measurement of thermal resistivity of …

Physiological Responses Of Holstein Steer Calves To Winter Climatic Conditions, Jay A. Runestad Jan 1974

Physiological Responses Of Holstein Steer Calves To Winter Climatic Conditions, Jay A. Runestad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When a warm-blooded animal, homeotherm, is subjected to an environment colder than body temperature, according to the physical laws of heat and mass transfer, heat dissipation from the animal will be increased. Left unchecked the body temperature will drop, homeothermia, possibly resulting in death. The animal compensates for this heat loss by increasing heat production and/or reducing heat loss by a number of chemical or physical adjustments. One such adjustment is vasoconstriction, which reduces blood flow to the surface, thereby, reducing the temperature of the skin and extremities, with peripheral temperatures of some homeotherms dropping to slightly above freezing without …

Storage Quality Measurements Of Two Large Hay Packages, Ronald Eugene Schrempp Jan 1974

Storage Quality Measurements Of Two Large Hay Packages, Ronald Eugene Schrempp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forage evaluation for utilization by ruminants can be made by several methods. The conventional in vivo digestibility trials, in vitro dry matter digestibility methods and a number of chemical component analyses have been tested quite extensively in the last 25 years. The in vivo digestibility trial has been the traditional method for feed evaluation, but performance of such a trial is costly and tedious and the resulting total digestible nutrients or digestible energy values have been criticized as being an incomplete measure-of feed value. There are many laboratory feed analyses methods available today. However, in vitro digestibility data have been …

Characterization Of A Bovine Parvovirus, Thomas J. Langpap Jan 1974

Characterization Of A Bovine Parvovirus, Thomas J. Langpap

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bovine parvovirus has been shown to produce calf scours (40). Although exact figures are unavailable, a sizeable economic loss is suffered annually by South Dakotans as a result of this disease. Bovine parvovirus has been isolated in South Dakota (7). However, the extent of exposure to the virus is unknown. The object of this study is to characterize the South Dakota parvovirus isolate and determine by serological methods the extent of exposure in cattle. A preliminary study to determine the ability of parvovirus to cause abortion in cattle will also be undertaken.

An Experimental Heat Transfer Analysis Of Summer Cooling Requirements For Tractor Cabs In South Dakota, Joseph C. Thomas Jan 1974

An Experimental Heat Transfer Analysis Of Summer Cooling Requirements For Tractor Cabs In South Dakota, Joseph C. Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The past decade has brought many changes to the farmers of the Great Plains. Fewer people are engaged in agricultural production, and the average farm size continues to grow. Today's farmers are buying bigger tractors, many of which have cabs to minimize effects of increased noise pollution, dust, and temperature extremes. Since these cabs were designed to serve as protection from noise and the elements, they must be relatively tight. During hot summer weather the enclosure will become unbearably hot. For this reason, an adequate air conditioning system is almost a necessity. Modern tractor cab air conditioning allows the operator …

Investigation Of The Anaerobic-Aerobic Treatment System Treating Potato Processing Wastes, Midwest Foods Corporation, Clark, South Dakota, William J. Trygstad Jan 1974

Investigation Of The Anaerobic-Aerobic Treatment System Treating Potato Processing Wastes, Midwest Foods Corporation, Clark, South Dakota, William J. Trygstad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rapid increase in raw potato production has been accompanied by an even greater increase in the amount of processed potatoes. In 1946, only 4.6 percent of the annual potato production was processed into specialty items. By 1960, 32 percent of the total potato crop was being processed. Predictions for 1970 were that more than 50 percent of the raw potatoes would be processed into potato food products. Approximately 36 percent of the potatoes processed in 1964 consisted of frozen potato products. Predictions by DuPont indicate that by 1976, over 3926 million pounds of frozen potato products will be produced. …
