Specific objectives of this report are: 1. To describe in detail the construction and operation of the pilot units, 2. To determine the infiltrative capacity and characteristics of the soil in the pilot units in response to the application of stabilization pond effluent, 3. To determine the effect of basin surface cover type on the infiltrative capacity of the soil, 4. To study the response of the natural groundwater table to periodic floodings, and, 5. To evaluate the feasibility of a full-scale land-infiltration system at this location based on the infiltration and hydraulic characteristics of the soil.

The Wild Rice Creek Watershed project, in North and South Dakota was constructed under authority of the Small Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act (P.L. 83-566 as amended). Structural measures included 24.7 miles of channelization and four floodwater retarding dams. To measure the degree that channelization influenced drainage of prairie wetlands, drainage rates in a channelized tributary were compared to rates in an unchannelized tributary of Wild Rice Creek. Channelization had a direct impact on wetlands by channel drainage reduction of overbank flows, and by providing drainage outlets. Population Status Of Beaver On The Free-Running Missouri River In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert J. Vanden Berge

One hundred sixty two beaver (Castor canadensis) harvested by trappers from the free-running Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota were examined from fall 1974 to spring 1976. Ninety two were males and 70 were females (131:100 sex ratio). Age specific sex ratios were not significantly different (P >0.05) from a 1:1 ratio for all age classes. The age structure of the sample was 69:26:45:15:4:3 for age classes zero through five, respectively. Minimum breeding age for female beaver was 2.5 years. Seventy-eight percent of all females (>2.5 years old) collected after the breeding season contained corpora lutea and viable fetuses. …

A project connected with the South Dakota University Agricultural Experiment Station was initiated in 1972 to evaluate alfalfa and corn yield response to a management scheme where a center pivot is used on more than one field. The project was to take place in the South Dakota climatic region and to include a limited soil moisture storage situation. In order to present the finding of the project and to evaluate the economics of such a scheme the following objectives of this study were established: 1. Throughout the history of agriculture man has sought improved methods of tilling soil. Technological developments in recent years have enabled man to apply large amounts of mechanical energy to soil tillage. But, as the energy limitations of the world begin to be realized, the development of more efficient means of soil tillage will become increasingly important. In tillage machine design, as in other engineering design fields, the designer has three basic methods of predicting the performance of a system. The objective of this thesis is to predict from a theoretical basis the stress redistribution processes occurring within the viscoelastic core of a cylindrical pressure vessel reinforced by an elastic casing around the outer perimeter, and subject to internal pressure applied to the time-dependent inner boundary of the cylinder. The problem so stated requires development of a new technique leading to a solution for a mixed boundary value problem for a viscoelastic body occupying an ablating cylindrical y-shaped region. Utilization Of Fly Ash In The Removal Of Orthophosphate From Water Samples, Marla Rae Behm

The ability of different fly ash samples to remove orthophosphate from standard phosphate solutions and from wastewater samples is reported. The results of studies to determine the temperature, the amount of fly ash, and the time necessary for maximum orthophosphate removal are included. The mode of action, whether by absorption onto the fly ash or by a precipitation reaction with one or more of the soluble components from the fly ash, is also investigated. The chemical compounds present in the fly ash, as determined by x-ray diffraction, are also included.
