Many conflicting reports have been given in the literature concerning the effect of various factors on the rate of reversal of figure and ground in reversible perspective. Flugel (7, 8) suggested that changes in eye movement increased the number of reversals. He thought that fixation on one part of the figure could lead to S’s interpretation of this part as being "nearer” the observer and that changes in perspective were induced by changing the fixation point. Donahue (5) found that there was a rhythm in the reversals but the shift in the fixation point was not in rhythm with the …

SOuth Dakota is one of the most important beef cattle producing states in the nation, ranking fifth on the average between 1943-1947. The number of beef cattle in SOuth Dakota has been increasing during the past several years. Most parts of the state are well adapted to beef production, especially the range area in the western part where extensive grass lands are available. The twenty-two western counties of South Dakota, the portion of the state generally considered as the range area, comprise 37, 130 square miles or forty-eight percent of the total acreage of the state. The men who receive the American Farmer Degree are outstanding in high school, and at least up to the time that they are awarded this honor, which is conferred upon them after they complete secondary school. In this study the writer wishes to find out if they are still outstanding. The following questions are also discussed: are they contributing to leadership; are they adjusted in an occupation; are they working in agriculture; and what progress have they made in their field? Information was gathered by means of a questionnaire which asked these men to state how vocational agriculture had influenced …

The Condensation Of Phenols With Maleic Anhydride, Leslie D. Kamstra

The condensation of phenols with phthalic anhydride to give acid-base indicators is well known. The preparation of phenolphthalein was first reported by Baeyer in 1871 (1) using concentrated sulfuric acid as the catalyst. Baeyer reported the successful use of sulfuric chloride as the catalyst for the preparation of phenolphthalein in 1880 (2). Early reports of the condensation of resorcinol (3), p-chlorophenol(4) and o-cresol (5) with phthalic anhydride have also been made. The reaction of phenols with coumarin (11), with diphenic acid anhydride (8) and with succinic anhydride (6) to form compounds comparable in structure to the phthaleins has been reported. …
