The study of the relationship between chemical constitution and physiological effect embraces many very interesting problems which are, however, frequently difficult to solve. In the investigation of any drug the first step is to determine the principle to which the physiological effect is due, and then by analysis and synthesis assign the correct chemical constitution to this principle. When the chemical constitution is definitely known, other compounds of a similar structure may be prepared, and their physiological action compared with the original drug. By this means it is sometimes possible to prepare drugs which possess the principle desired in the …

Because the critics of the eighteenth century admired form more than thought, Sir Richard Steele has been sadly neglected and all honours have been heaped upon his literary partner, Joseph Addison. Slowly the readers of the twentieth century are beginning to realize that Steele had all the originality, while Addison had nothing but polish. Acridine is a compound that has a ring system similar to anthracene except that one of the CH groups is replaced by a -N- group. It is possible for this compound to have desmotropic forms as those that follow. When an amino group is present in the 3 or 6 position, there is possible another desmotropic form that probably causes a deepening in the color of the compound. Acridine and its derivatives are obtained by the destructive distillation of coal. It occurs in the crude anthracene obtained from the coal tar. Many of its derivatives are used as dyes and …

Reconstruction began in Kentucky somewhat sooner than in the States south of the Blue Grass Commonwealth. As soon as the invading Confederate army withdrew from the State in 1862, loyal Kentuckians began to prepare for peaceful pursuits and to restore the State, as best they could, to somewhat the position it occupied before the war between the states. Of course it was impossible to remake the State as it was before the struggle, but at least the civil authority could be restored, and the State prepared for the reign of peace. A species of Grindelia known as Gum, Rosin or Tar weed, is of common occurrence on dry banks and sandy soils in various parts of South Dakota. During day seasons it attains such a dense growth in closely cropped pastures that horses feeding in them have their heads and manes covered with a black tarry-like substance, and their fetlocks collects fairly large ball of this tarry mass. In dry years the development of the weed is so rapid that the grass in a closely cropped pasture may be nearly exterminated during a single season. A pasture may seem to be …

Soon after the atomic theory was established, it was found that the plant uses as sources of food not only the air and water, but also different constituents of the soil, dissolved in the soil moisture—the mineral nutrients. Ashes of different burned plants were analyzed; they were found to vary with the soil in which the plants were grown as well as with the species of the plant and the special organ from which the ashes were obtained. Linseed oil is the oil from the plant linum usitatissiumum. It is not a new oil, for we read that the Greeks and Romans used it, not as it is used today, but as a food, and it is still used for that purpose in some countries, especially in Russia, Poland, and Hungary. The oil was first introduced into the United States during the nineteenth century, and in 1810 there were two hundred eighty three linseed oil mills in only fourteen states. The most important non-protein nitrogenous constituents of milk are urea, creatinine, creatine, and uric acid. Urea is the diamide of carbonic acid and is the chief end-product, so far as nitrogen is concerned, of the physiological metabolism of the proteins of the foods and tissues. It has long been considered a matter of greatest importance to ascertain in what organ or tissues urea is formed. This paper is involved in a study of the intrigues of Kentuckians for the securing of the Mississippi River as a free waterway for the marketing of their produce and the consequent improvement of the condition of Kentuckians in every way. The conspiracies of such men as Blount and Burr have not been included because there was no real and vital connection of Kentuckians with their schemes. The Crow Creek Indian Reservation is located in South Dakota, bordering the east side of the Missouri River, about forty miles below Pierre, the Capital. In fact, a part of Hughes county lies in the Big Bend District of the reservation, and the south end of Hyde County and the west end of Buffalo County make up the rest of it - in all 313,304,23 acres or 489.5 square miles - about 13.5 townships. A growing interest has manifested itself within the past two or three years in "phytin" and "phytic acid", and in some of the compounds of the latter. Posternak first isolated this substance from the seeds of the red fir, pumpkin, pea, bean, white and yellow lupine and potato. Patten and Hart obtained the substance from wheat bran, and Hart and Tottingham found it in corn meal, oats and barley. The organic phosphorus materials obtained by alcoholic precipitations of aqueous or dilute acid extracts from these various sources are not identical, but ultimate analyses show a fair degree of similarity.
