Nine Years Of Ffa Progress In South Dakota 1944-1953, E.W. Gustafson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What has the FFA of South Dakota accomplished since 1944? What effect did World War II have on the organization and what has been its growth and development since this time? Does the state FFA chapter continue to grow with the national organization? It is the purpose of this study to get at least part of the answers to these questions. In 1945 Arlington Eddy submitted his thesis, “Fifteen Years of Future Farmer of America Progress in South Dakota 1929-1944.” This study is hereby presented to add to the information already given by Mr. Eddy and to bring the history …

A Microchemical Modification Of The Mccarthy And Sullivan Method For The Determination Of Methionine, Emilia Rodelas Joson Jan 1954

A Microchemical Modification Of The Mccarthy And Sullivan Method For The Determination Of Methionine, Emilia Rodelas Joson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Methionine was discovered in 1922 by Mueller (33) and was first known as Mueller’s acid. In 1928 Barger and Coyne (6) found that it was a methylated sulfur compound known as alpha-amino-gamma-methyl thio-butryic acid and later gave it the present shorter name of methionine. Rose and his associates (34) have shown that it is the essential sulfur amino acid and not cysteine as was formerly thought. Methionine plays an important role in the growth of plants and animals: first, as a methylating agent; second, as an amino acid essential for the building of tissue proteins; third, as a source of …

A Market News Service For Livestock Auctions In South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek Jan 1954

A Market News Service For Livestock Auctions In South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Auction sales are an important marketing medium for livestock in this country today. This method of selling is not a new or novel one. The selling of livestock through auctions was probably adapted from Great Britain, and first used in this country in the early nineteenth century. These sales were most often held to dispose of imported and domestic breeding stock. The first regularly scheduled auction sale with publicly consigned merchandise was established at Union, Iowa in 1904. From this beginning the number of livestock auctions increased, especially after 1930. This increase was particularly rapid in the twelve Western States …

History Of The South Dakota Crop Improvement Association, Jason S. Webster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A history of the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association cannot be confined to only facts, dates, and personalities involved in the progress of an organization, but must embody the determined and arduous efforts of our forefathers evolving a stable and permanent agriculture for South Dakota. It also entails to some degree, the history of crop production in the state and suggests the evolution of many of our present day crop varieties and cultural practices. The importance of the work of our crop and soil scientists and the methods of disseminating their findings to the farmers is closely linked to the …

Problem Areas Of Beginning Teachers Of Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, Wendell Deboer Jan 1954

Problem Areas Of Beginning Teachers Of Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, Wendell Deboer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A beginning teacher in vocational agriculture is confronted by many problems when he begins his teaching career. Some of these problems are temporary and are mastered by the individual in a short time. Some are not immediate, but appear as the teacher gains more experience. These, also, may be mastered in a short period of time. Still other problems arise that become ever-present ones and, in spite of all the initiative and experience the teacher can muster, they will still confront him. The writer, like all vocational agriculture teachers, is concerned with these problems. He has completed four years of …

A Survey Of The High School Drop-Outs At The Standing Rock Community High School, Fort Yates, North Dakota During A Four-Year Period 1950-54, Donald Arthur Weston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The less talented pupils are being eliminated from the schools and caused to meet adult problems without adequate preparation due to the unflexible definition entertained of what constitutes an education. Efforts to achieve a high level of scholarship have been causing schools to be more selective than they should according to the spirit of the public school laws. The discouraged low-ability pupil tends to drop out of school at a lower grade level than would have been necessary providing the school programs were more adaptable to the individual differences of pupils. Schools have had a tendency to attempt to prepare …

The Nature Of Chromatin Changes In Colchicine-Induced Variants In Sorghum, Dale D. Harpstead Jan 1953

The Nature Of Chromatin Changes In Colchicine-Induced Variants In Sorghum, Dale D. Harpstead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The induction or true breeding variants with unchanged chromosome member in a variety of Sorghum vulgare Pers. was reported by Franske and Rosa (5). These variants resulted from colchicina treatment of seedlings in a variety which was we known to breed true. The authors proposed that variant plants lmay have originated from a haploid chromosome complement formed bysomatic reduction, which was later restored to the diploid condition. Such a cell by virtue of its genetic constitution or its position in the meristomatic region may be able to initiate a s new growing point having homozygous diploid tissue. This proposal in …

Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson Jan 1953

Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem stated as a broad social question is : Has the Farm Ownership loan program been achieving its objectives of reducing farm tenancy and promoting security of tenure through family farm ownership? Available evidence indicates that the program may not have been very effective in reducing farm tenancy either nationally or in a high-tenancy area such as South Dakota where 53 percent of the farmers were tenants in 1940 . From its inception in 1937 through June 30, 1950, the Farm Ownership loan program made 58, 395 direct and insured loans in the United States. This figure compared with …
