Mobility And Behavior Of Raccoons In Eastern South Dakota, George L. Geis Jan 1966

Mobility And Behavior Of Raccoons In Eastern South Dakota, George L. Geis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Increasing populations of raccoons (Procyon lotor) and reports of depredation on upland game, poultry, and garden crops indicated a need for research concerning behavior, mobility, and range of raccoons. The raccoon has seemingly adapted to the dry environment of the northern agricultural plains. According to records, the original range apparently did not extend into South Dakota. Lewis and Clark did not report raccoons when they traveled along the Missouri River in 1804 and 1806 (Coues, 1893). Although Visher (1918) noted that raccoons were not rare in wooded areas along streams in western South Dakota, he made no mention of …

The Effects Of Physical Practice, Mental Practice And Mental-Physical Practice On The Learning Of Selected Basic Tumbling Stunts, Norma Boetel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of physical practice, mental practice, and mental-physical practice upon the learning of selected basic tumbling stunts. The subjects chosen were 21 volunteer women from the required physical education classes at South Dakota State University. The 21 women were placed by a table of random numbers into a physical practice group, a mental practice group, and a mental-physical practice group. The experimental groups were given tumbling instructions by the author three times per week. The first meeting of each group was devoted to instruction and an explanation of the factors relative …

Suitability Of Cheese Whey As A Substrate For Vitamin B12 Production By Propionibacterium Shermanii, Lloyd B. Bullerman Jan 1965

Suitability Of Cheese Whey As A Substrate For Vitamin B12 Production By Propionibacterium Shermanii, Lloyd B. Bullerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Disposal of waste is a major problem confronting the food industry today. These wastes are of varied composition and origin. One such material is cheese whey. Most of the surplus whey is considered to be and handled as an industrial waste, and disposed of in some manner. Whey is a by-product of cheese making. Since 90% of the starting volume of milk remains as whey after cheese manufacture, annual production of whey is large. Herein lies a large part of the whey problem, the fact that the actual consumption of whey is a small part of the total production. If …

Opportunities And Training Needs In Non-Farm Agricultural Occupations In A South-Western Iowa School District, Robert L. Madden Jan 1965

Opportunities And Training Needs In Non-Farm Agricultural Occupations In A South-Western Iowa School District, Robert L. Madden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various prominent figures on the American agricultural scene, farm magazine editors, and even, to a lesser degree, the general public have become aware of the need for skilled employees in agricultural non-farm occupations. While most vocational agriculture educators recognize the need and are quite willing to help solve the problem, they frequently are working blindly. Which occupations and jobs in a given community have need for high school vocational training? What is the employment outlook in these occupations for the foreseeable future? This study was expected to identify, describe, and classify non-farm agricultural jobs in the Hamburg community in order …

A Study Of The Present Status Of Physical Education Facilities For Women In The Institutions Of The South Dakota College Physical Education Association, Harold Robert Mansheim Jan 1965

A Study Of The Present Status Of Physical Education Facilities For Women In The Institutions Of The South Dakota College Physical Education Association, Harold Robert Mansheim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The administration and conduct of the modern physical education program for college women involves the supplying and maintaining of adequate facilities. The author is convinced that the program content should be based upon the needs and interests of the students. If future teachers are to be capable of conducting broad programs that truly meet the needs and interests of their students, the physical education major curriculum must be comprehensive in its scope. Adequate facilities make a vital contribution to a favorable learning environment. Physiologists and physical educators agree that benefits are derived from participation in physical education programs. As a …

Transmission Of Two Strains Of Two Stylet-Borne Viruses By Single Myzus Persicae (Sulz.) Aphids, Manolo Bautista Castillo Jan 1965

Transmission Of Two Strains Of Two Stylet-Borne Viruses By Single Myzus Persicae (Sulz.) Aphids, Manolo Bautista Castillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has long been known that plants infected with certain virus strain develop no further symptoms when inoculated with another strain of the same virus. The phenomenon became known as premunity, antagonism, interference or cress protection workers have differentiated the terms cross protection and interference. A situation in which virus infection with one strain confers protection against a related strain was termed cross protection. Hypothesis were formulated to explain the existence of cross protection and interference. Workers have confirmed, however, that when two viruses, related or otherwise, were introduced at the same time into a plant, simultaneous infections by both …

The Effects Of Seasonality Of Manufactured Milk Production On Dairy Manufacturing Firms' Efficiency, Law Nicholas Brod Jan 1965

The Effects Of Seasonality Of Manufactured Milk Production On Dairy Manufacturing Firms' Efficiency, Law Nicholas Brod

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal variations in milk production have been a major problem of the South Dakota dairy manufacturing industry for a number of years. Processors faced throughout the year with wide fluctuations in the volume of milk received are prevented from obtaining optimum utilization of equipment, labor, and other plant facilities. Manufacturers cannot decrease operating costs materially as volume declines from peak levels since a major portion of the plant’s costs are fixed. The above generally indicates the nature of this study. How then, is South Dakota affected by this problem? Seasonality of milk production in South Dakota is decreasing, but the …
