Shape Analysis Of The Corpus Callosum Of Autistic And Normal Subjects In Neuroimaging., Ahmed Aly Farag
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Early detection of human disease in today’s society can have an enormous impact on the severity of the disease that is manifested. Disease such as Autism and Dyslexia, which have no current cure or proven mechanism as to how they develop, can often have an adverse physical and physiological impact on the lifestyle of a human being. Although these disease are not fully curable, the severity handicaps that accompany them can be significantly reduced with the proper therapy, and thus the earlier that the disease is detected the faster therapy can be administered. The research in this thesis is an …
Viability For Oxidation Of H2s Gas Using Low Concentration Solutions Of H2o2 Peroxide In Applications For Biogas Purification., Stewart Walter Mccollam 1985-
Viability For Oxidation Of H2s Gas Using Low Concentration Solutions Of H2o2 Peroxide In Applications For Biogas Purification., Stewart Walter Mccollam 1985-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of the viability of a low pH hydrogen peroxide scrubbing process for removing H 2 S acid gas present in typical biogas streams generated from dairy farm anaerobic digesters. Biogas ranges in composition based on the feedstock manure used in the anaerobic digestion process but typically consists of methane (50-60%), carbon dioxide (40-50%), and trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. Hydrogen sulfide is of prime concern because it is an odorous, poisonous, and highly corrosive gas which can impede use in power generation applications for biogas such as boilers, internal combustion engines, microturbines, fuel …

Integration Of The Avoidance Cycle With The Schema Enmeshment Model Of Pain : Relationships With Quality Of Life And Disability In Chronic, Nonmalignant Pain., Jeffrey A. Meyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Persons living with chronic pain encounter a host of physical and psychosocial problems resulting in a loss of quality of life and increased disability. The construct of avoidance has been proposed as a mechanism by which these changes in functioning occur. This study explored the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) construct of experiential avoidance and its conceptualization within the ACT model of avoidance, the Cycle of Avoidance. The model is introduced as a framework for integrating an existing model of chronic pain and avoidance, the Schema Enmeshment Model of Pain (SEMP), thus providing a more comprehensive perspective. The study used …
A Hybrid Genetic-Greedy Approach To The Skills Management Problem., Daniel Grieshaber 1986-
A Hybrid Genetic-Greedy Approach To The Skills Management Problem., Daniel Grieshaber 1986-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Naval Surface Warfare Center wishes to create a task assignment schedule with a minimal training cost for workers to raise their skills to the required levels. As the number of workers, skills, and tasks increase, the problem quickly becomes too large to solve through brute force. Already several greedy heuristics have been produced, though their performance degrades for larger data sets. As Genetic Algorithms (GA) are effective for large combinatorial problems, their application to the task assignment problem may prove successful. The innovation in applying a GA to this problem is the utilization of existing greedy heuristics in the …
Hilltop Archaeology: Ceremony And Ritual At The Site Of Cerro Santa Rita, Chao Valley, Peru, Richard A. Busch
Hilltop Archaeology: Ceremony And Ritual At The Site Of Cerro Santa Rita, Chao Valley, Peru, Richard A. Busch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Site of Cerro Santa Rita is located in the mid-valley region of the Chao Valley on the North Cast of Peru. Occupied by people during the Gallinazo, Moche and Chimú time periods, Cerro Santa Rita fulfilled a role similar to that of a huaca, or temple. The people of pre-Hispanic Peru were deep set in their traditions, many of these traditions are still practiced by Peruvians today. The traditions of ancestor veneration and feasting are no exceptions to this. Cerro Santa Rita was a burial complex that had plazas and courtyards associated with the tombs of ancestors. Not …
Marginality And Coping: A Communal Contextual Narrative Approach To Pastoral Care With Korean American Christians, Jaesang Lyu
Marginality And Coping: A Communal Contextual Narrative Approach To Pastoral Care With Korean American Christians, Jaesang Lyu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Focusing on Korean American experiences of racism, sexism, and intergenerational conflicts related to the acculturation process, this dissertation examines the social reality of marginality and constructs a communal contextual narrative approach to pastoral care. Current approaches to pastoral care in the Korean American church encourage a deferring style of religious coping that maintains the status quo—the internalized status of marginality—without activating self agency for the fulfillment of one’s own selfhood within the communal life of religious communities. A communally grounded sense of self agency is described in terms of three aspects of Korean indigenous culture: 1) uri (we-ness), 2) jeong …
Gene-Environment Interactions In Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Holly Donovan Barnard
Gene-Environment Interactions In Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Holly Donovan Barnard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The overall goal of this project is to advance our understanding of the multifactorial etiology of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by testing a diathesis-stress model of gene x environment (g x e) interactions. Although the literature increasingly supports g x e interactions in the manifestation of ADHD, few studies have investigated multiple genetic and environmental risk factors, included direct tests of gene - environment correlations (rG-Es), explored the specificity of interactions to symptom dimensions, or attempted to minimize comparisons. Therefore, utilizing both within-family (FBAT/PBAT) and case-control methodology, this study sought to (1) explore main effects of polymorphisms in the …

Physical Effects Of The Respiratory Syncytial Virus On Human Cells., Adam Pfendt 1985-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Respiratory syncytial virus is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection in infants and currently lacks an effective vaccine or treatment beyond symptom relief. The atomic force microscope is particularly well suited for imaging biological samples including DNA, proteins, cells, and viral activity. Analyzing fixed HEp-2 cells with the AFM after infection and incubation with RSV for periods up to 24 hrs reveals several physical changes that may lead to a better understanding of the viral effects on living cells. Comparing cells fixed with methanol or glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide suggests substantial volume losses in the cells regardless of …

Molecular Mechanism Of Ferricsiderophore Transport Via The Outer Membrane Receptor Fhua In Escherichia Coli., Jennifer K. Cooke
Molecular Mechanism Of Ferricsiderophore Transport Via The Outer Membrane Receptor Fhua In Escherichia Coli., Jennifer K. Cooke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Iron is essential for life and growth in most organisms. Although it is abundant, iron exists mostly as insoluble iron-oxyhydroxide. Bacteria secrete siderophores to chelate iron and transport it into the cell via specific outer membrane receptors. The FhuA receptor protein transports ferrichrome, a siderophore produced by Ustilago sphaerogena. We determined the binding affinity of variants from the conserved 'lock region' of FhuA and also created and characterized variants of the highly conserved R452 to determine its role in ferrichrome transport. We hypothesize that during transport the plug domain of FhuA does not leave the barrel; rather it undergoes …

A Case Study Of Jemicy School To Determine Practices Conducive To Developing Creative Potential Of Dyslexic Children., Brenda Sue Graves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 15% to 20% of Americans struggle with learning disabilities. The National Institutes of Health reported that 60% to 80% of those with learning disabilities have problems with reading and language skills (as cited in International Dyslexia Association, 2000). Dyslexia is a specific learning disability and according to Moats (2008), it is more common than any other kind of learning disability. Dyslexia varies in degrees of severity. About 4% of those diagnosed with dyslexia are severely dyslexic. This includes some 375,000 school children (Dyslexia Action, 2006). Although dyslexia certainly causes difficulties for children, many of them are bright and capable. …

John Dewey, Historiography, And The Practice Of History., Seth J. Bartee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Dewey was America's foremost authority on many of the critical issues in the twentieth century. Dewey dedicated his professional career as an expert on the major branches of philosophy.
A neglected aspect of Dewey's philosophy is his writings on historiography, the philosophy of history, and his influence on American historians. Dewey affected several generations of historians from the Progressive historians to the practical realists of today.
This study evaluates Dewey's pragmatism as a legitimate strain in American historiography. James Harvey Robinson and Charles Beard claimed Dewey as an influence. Later historians such as Richard Hofstadter and Joyce Appleby insist …

Durkheim's Refutation Of Spencerian Methodological Individualism: A Critical Evaluation., Matthew Bryan Smith
Durkheim's Refutation Of Spencerian Methodological Individualism: A Critical Evaluation., Matthew Bryan Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The famed French classical social theorist Emile Durkheim's academic reputation is based largely on his critical rejection of the British utilitarian tradition and specifically the writings of the classical British sociologist Herbert Spencer. In this thesis I critically evaluate Durkheim's critique of Herbert Spencer's methodological individualism. It is found that while select Durkheimian claims merit continued allegiance, his broader critique of Spencer's methodological individualism must be viewed as logically and empirically deficient. In conclusion I examine the implications for Durkheimian sociology and the broader social theoretical enterprise directed at analyzing and conceptualizing the nature of sociality and the social bond.
Development Of A Reservoir Embayment Characterization Process To Prioritize Water Quality Improvement., Terry Shannon O'Quinn
Development Of A Reservoir Embayment Characterization Process To Prioritize Water Quality Improvement., Terry Shannon O'Quinn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To simplify water quality improvement in reservoirs, it has been suggested that efforts should be focused on smaller and more manageable units such as reservoir embayment areas. Embayments are prime locations to locate marinas, parks, beaches, and residential homes. Current data and information on reservoir embayments in Tennessee was assembled into a GIS-based database. Embayments of 11 main reservoirs were mapped and digitized in ArcGIS. Initial characterization criteria include watershed size, embayment area-watershed ratio, maximum residence time, and stream influence on embayments. The characterization process was then applied to the mapped reservoir embayments in Tennessee to identify and prioritize embayments …
Nectin-1 Is Degraded In Chlamydia Trachomatis-Infected Genital Epithelial Cells And Is Required For Herpes Simplex Virus Co-Infection-Induced C. Trachomatis Persistence., Jingru Sun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial STD agent in the US. This bacterium has a unique biphasic developmental cycle in which the infectious elementary body (EB) infects a host mucosal epithelial cell and differentiates into the replicative form (the reticulate body or RB) within a modified vacuole called an inclusion. The RB later divides and develops back into an EB and is released, perpetuating the infectious cycle. When developing chlamydiae are exposed to unfavorable environmental conditions, they deviate from the normal developmental cycle into a non-infectious but viable state termed persistence. Previous data from our …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a significant relationship exists between particular home, student, and school characteristics and ACT scores and the relationship these characteristics subsequently have with the TVAAS grades assigned to each high school's ACT scores. These home, student, and school variables were socioeconomic status, percentage of minority, graduation rate, per-pupil expenditure, Gateway English II scores, and Gateway Algebra I scores. By looking at these variables and the influence they hold on the education of students, I sought to ascertain the fairness that is present when schools and districts are given grades through the TVAAS …
Denying Queer Realities: Scripting The Normative Homo., Porscha Rae Yount
Denying Queer Realities: Scripting The Normative Homo., Porscha Rae Yount
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Queer theorists and sociologists have argued that the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movement further marginalizes some queer individuals in the pursuit of legitimacy from the dominant heterosexist culture. This study uses qualitative content analysis to examine the Web sites of four social movement organizations that claim to work for the LGBT community (Human Rights Campaign, Lambda Legal Defense Fund, National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force). In this thesis, I argue that these organizations participate in scripting the normative homo ideal while distancing themselves from problematic identities that challenge normative, natural frameworks …
