New Synthetic Methodologies For The Construction And Optimization Of Natural Products, Amir E. Wahba
New Synthetic Methodologies For The Construction And Optimization Of Natural Products, Amir E. Wahba
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Toxicity associated with bioactive natural products is considered as a major obstacle in the process of drug discovery. Manzamine A (MA) is one such candidate that requires optimization to overcome the toxicity problem. The manzamine alkaloids represents a unique class of natural products that have shown a diverse range of bioactivities including antimicrobial, antiparasitic, cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory, pesticidial, and was shown to possess activity against HIV-1 and AIDS opportunistic infections. The greatest potential for the manzamine alkaloids appears to be against malaria and neuroinflammation. Experimental and modeling studies suggested that the planer ?-carboline moiety can act as DNA intercalator and hence …
Chorister Formation Preferences In A Women's Choir, Janna Montgomery
Chorister Formation Preferences In A Women's Choir, Janna Montgomery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While conductors and audience members are not committed to a single formation, choristers have a clear preference: sectional or mixed. Why is this? Participants in this study included forty-six members of an auditioned women's choir from a large southern university who completed a survey after singing in sectional and mixed formation. These SSAA results maintain previous research findings by James Daugherty, Debra Atkinson, and Christopher Aspaas, et al. from female choristers in SATB settings: most women prefer mixed formation. All 46 of the participants (100%) perceived that formation generally affects the choral sound, so they think formation is important. Women's …
The Relationship Between Psychological Contract Breach, Professional Identity, And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors: An Equity Sensitivity Perspective, Leigh Ann Bynum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Objectives: The purpose of this research was twofold. First, it tested the effects of the type of perceived psychological contract breach, equity sensitivity, and identity salience on an important employee outcome, namely organizational citizenship behaviors. Second, the research explored the effects that discipline and pharmacist status have on organizational citizenship behaviors. More precisely, the effect of equity sensitivity on the relationships between identity salience (discipline or school), type of perceived contract breach (administrative or professional) and the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors toward the School of Pharmacy by pharmacy school faculty was examined. Methods: Existing organizational citizenship, identity salience and …
Population Biology Of A Coastal Dune-Dwelling Spider (Arctosa Sanctaerosae) Along The Hurricane Disturbed Northern Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Robert A. Hataway
Population Biology Of A Coastal Dune-Dwelling Spider (Arctosa Sanctaerosae) Along The Hurricane Disturbed Northern Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Robert A. Hataway
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the continued increase in the number of tourists visiting the Northern Gulf coast in the last century and the resulting development of this coastline the habitat of Arctosa sanctaerosae has become fragmented; and the sprawl of large cities along the coast has further degraded available habitat. In addition to anthropogenic disturbance to this coastal region, hurricanes are an additional and natural perturbation to the ecosystem. This habitat has seen a number of major tropical storms over the last decade and I have sought to explore the impact of habitat destruction and storm-induced disturbance on a species of spider endemic …

Five new six-membered ring cyclic peroxides: plakinastreloic acid A (8), methyl plakinastreloate …
Postglacial Sandy Hill: A Regional Manifestation Of The Gulf Of Maine Archaic Tradition, Benjamin Russell
Postglacial Sandy Hill: A Regional Manifestation Of The Gulf Of Maine Archaic Tradition, Benjamin Russell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over twenty years of archaeological excavations at Sandy Hill, in Mashantucket, CT, have provided an incredibly rich assemblage of artifacts. Yet some of the most basic questions about Sandy Hill's Early Archaic inhabitants remain unanswered. This thesis will synthesize the results of major excavations at Sandy Hill by analyzing site morphology, lithics, and hard tissue macrobotanical remains from several radiocarbon dated contexts. Macrobotanical artifacts recovered from Sandy Hill indicate a preference for hazelnut as well as wetland roots and tubers. The lithic assemblage is related to the Gulf of Maine Archaic Tradition and the predominance of quartz flakes technology and …
Theoretical Characterization Of Non-Covalent Weakly Bound Clusters Through The Application Of Sophisticated Computational Quantum Chemistry Methodologies And The Development Of Integrated Fragmentation Techniques, Desiree Bates
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Non-covalent, weakly bound clusters have been and remain of significant interest to many researchers. However, with computational studies, accurate description of these interactions requires sophisticated electronic structure methods employing large basis sets. This methodology becomes extremely computationally demanding as the size of the system increases. This work presents benchmark data and explores methods for obtaining highly accurate ab initio results for larger systems at greatly reduced computational costs. CCSD(T) complete basis set limit interaction energies are presented for a variety of parallel-slipped π...π dimers and low-lying isomers of (h2o)6. The calibration of a 2-body:Many-body fragmentation method …
The Effects Of Chronic Prophylactic Naproxen Sodium On Skeletal Muscle Adaptation To Resistance Exercise In Recreationally-Trained College-Aged Males, Christi Brewer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Resistance exercise causes exercise-induced muscle injury (EIMI), triggering an acute local inflammatory response associated with delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DOMS is characterized by a predictable discomfort and decreased level of muscle performance and is believed to be the product of both mechanical and inflammatory processes. From the latter perspective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been investigated for their potential to alleviate DOMS-associated symptoms. Such analgesics exert their effects by blocking the formation of prostaglandins; however, prostaglandins, specifically prostaglandin F 2?, also play an important role in skeletal muscle regeneration. While some have advocated the use of NSAIDs for the relief …
Effect Of Uv-A Irradiance On Lipid Accumulation In Nannochloropsis Oculata, Rathy Srinivas
Effect Of Uv-A Irradiance On Lipid Accumulation In Nannochloropsis Oculata, Rathy Srinivas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The marine microalgae Nannochloropsis spp. are of both ecological and economic importance as they contribute to the base of the food chain of marine systems, and can accumulate a considerable amount of lipids. Their lipids can be grouped into two categories, storage lipids, which are mainly triglycerides (TGs), and structural lipids, which are composed of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). PUFAs are essential nutrients for both aquatic animals and humans, while TGs can be transesterified to produce biodiesel. Lipid formation in microalgae depends on several environmental factors and Nannochloropsis spp. have been shown to accumulate excess storage lipids under stressful conditions. …
Characterization Of Intermolecular Pi-Type Interactions Using Sophisticated Quantum Mechanical, Electronic Structure Computations, Emily Joy Carrell
Characterization Of Intermolecular Pi-Type Interactions Using Sophisticated Quantum Mechanical, Electronic Structure Computations, Emily Joy Carrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Much like the instrumentation in an experimental lab, computational chemists use computers to solve the mathematical equations that describe the physics of electrons to understand the chemistry involved. The combination of the two main components of computational chemistry, the basis set and method, determines the ``cost'' (disk, memory, and CPU time) of a computation. A variety of basis sets and methods have been developed in the past century. The focus of this report is to accurately describe non-covalent interactions with the use of various quantum computational techniques. In Chapter 1 a brief discussion on the theory behind computational chemistry is …
With Malice Towards None: Six Stories And A Novella, Burke Nixon
With Malice Towards None: Six Stories And A Novella, Burke Nixon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A fiction collection consisting of six short stories folloby a novella. The pieces attempt to be comic, but also--with debatable success--to be more than just comic. As the title suggests, one of the collection's thematic concerns is mercy and its absence. Most of the pieces are set in Texas; characters in the collection include a female student in an absurdly incompetent public high school, a parking cop, the best friend of a stand-up comedian, an Abilene man whose life goal is to be struck by lightning, and an unselfconscious grandfather character, who bookends the beginning and end of the collection. …
Epigenetic Effects Of Benzo(A)Pyrene In Fundulus Heteroclitus And Danio Rerio, Xiefan Fang
Epigenetic Effects Of Benzo(A)Pyrene In Fundulus Heteroclitus And Danio Rerio, Xiefan Fang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
DNA methylation is one of the epigenetic mechanisms that controls gene expression and is vulnerable to early life environmental toxicant exposures. Our goal was to use two fish models, Fundulus heteroclitus and Danio rerio (zebrafish), to study the benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) effects on DNA methylation status and whether the alterations could contribute to BaP-mediated reproductive and developmental toxicities. Initially, we used Fundulus to study BaP effects on glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) expression throughout development. Fundulus embryos were exposed to waterborne BaP at nominally 10 or 100 μg/L and both GNMT mRNA expression and enzyme activity were measured. Quantitative PCR and whole mount …

The Seaside Resort Towns Of Cape May And Atlantic City, New Jersey Development, Class Consciousness, And The Culture Of Leisure In The Mid To Late Victorian Era, Tatyana Ressetar
The Seaside Resort Towns Of Cape May And Atlantic City, New Jersey Development, Class Consciousness, And The Culture Of Leisure In The Mid To Late Victorian Era, Tatyana Ressetar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Victorianism" is a highly controversial, sometimes ironic, term penned by historians throughout various works that has come to hold dramatic weight in both its meaning and its influence. Though the term is usually most closely associated with nineteenth century England, Victorianism was a highly influential movement in American culture simultaneously as well, specifically in the spheres of home, work, and play. Of those, "play," or leisure, is undoubtedly the least explored, especially before the latter decades of the twentieth century. Prior to this period, most literature about the Victorians, with the exception of a few works, only dealt with masculinity, …
A Laudable Ambition Fired Her Soul Conduct Fiction Helps Define Republican Womanhood, Female Communities, And Women's Education In The Works Of Judith Sargent Murray, Hannah Webster Foster, And Susanna Haswell Rowson, Jessica Crystal Workman
A Laudable Ambition Fired Her Soul Conduct Fiction Helps Define Republican Womanhood, Female Communities, And Women's Education In The Works Of Judith Sargent Murray, Hannah Webster Foster, And Susanna Haswell Rowson, Jessica Crystal Workman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the major works of Judith Sargent Murray, Hannah Webster Foster, and Susanna Haswell Rowson, three major writers of the 1790s whose writing responds to the ideologies of the early American Republic. I suggest that Murray, Foster, and Rowson write conduct fiction which responds to the changing attitudes toward women and education after the American Revolution. Using fiction, these authors comment on the republican woman, the need for women’s education, and the necessity for women to gather in communities for support. Despite the prevailing notion that reading too many novels would corrupt young women, Judith Sargent Murray’s novella, …
Stable Expression Of Tuberculosis Vaccine Antigen In Lettuce Chloroplasts, Priya Saikumar Lakshmi
Stable Expression Of Tuberculosis Vaccine Antigen In Lettuce Chloroplasts, Priya Saikumar Lakshmi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is one of the leading reasons of death by an infectious bacterial pathogen. The development of TB vaccines has been recognized as a major public health priority by the World Health Organization. In this study, a potential candidate antigen, ESAT-6 (6 kDa early secretory antigenic target) was fused with cholera toxin B subunit (CTB). Transplastomic lettuce plants were generated expressing these fusion proteins. Site-specific transgene integration into the chloroplast genome was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction and Southern blot analysis. In transplastomic leaves, expression levels of fusion protein (CTB-ESAT6) varied depending upon …
Evolutionary Relationships Among Staphylococci And The Prevention Of Staphylococcus Aureus Nasal Colonization, Ryan Paul Lamers
Evolutionary Relationships Among Staphylococci And The Prevention Of Staphylococcus Aureus Nasal Colonization, Ryan Paul Lamers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Staphylococcus is a significant cause of human infection and mortality, worldwide. Currently, there are greater than 60 taxa within Staphylococcus, and nearly all are pathogenic. The collective potential for virulence among species of Staphylococcus heightens the overall clinical significance of this genus and argues for a thorough understanding of the evolutionary relationships among species. Within Staphylococcus, aureus is the most common cause of human infection, where nasal carriage of this bacterium is a known risk factor for autoinfection. The predisposition to infection by nasal carriers of S. aureus, and the ease with which strains are transferred between individuals, suggests that …
Prediction Of Survival Of Early Stages Lung Cancer Patients Based On Er Beta Cellular Expressions And Epidemiological Data, Evgeny Martinenko
Prediction Of Survival Of Early Stages Lung Cancer Patients Based On Er Beta Cellular Expressions And Epidemiological Data, Evgeny Martinenko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We attempted a mathematical model for expected prognosis of lung cancer patients based on a multivariate analysis of the values of ER-interacting proteins (ERbeta) and a membrane bound, glycosylated phosphoprotein MUC1), and patients clinical data recorded at the time of initial surgery. We demonstrate that, even with the limited sample size available to use, combination of clinical and biochemical data (in particular, associated with ERbeta and MUC1) allows to predict survival of lung cancer patients with about 80% accuracy while prediction on the basis of clinical data only gives about 70% accuracy. The present work can be viewed as a …
Indirect Estimates Of Gene Flow And Its Conservation Implications In The Striped Newt (Notophthalmus Perstriatus), Sarah Elizabeth May
Indirect Estimates Of Gene Flow And Its Conservation Implications In The Striped Newt (Notophthalmus Perstriatus), Sarah Elizabeth May
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study used indirect methods to estimate patterns of gene flow in a rare salamander species, the striped newt (Notophthalmus perstriatus). First, we used combined genetic and ecological methods to determine whether populations that appear to exist in two regions separated by 125 km, exhibited genetic and ecological distinctness such that the regions demarcate separate conservation units. Using mtDNA (cyt-b), we found that haplotypes were shared between localities within each region but none were shared between regions. Niche-based distribution modeling revealed significant differences in the ecological setting between the two regions. In combination, the absence of evidence for recent genetic …
The Effects Of Urbanization On Cypress (Taxodium Distichum) In Central Florida, Lisa A. Mccauley
The Effects Of Urbanization On Cypress (Taxodium Distichum) In Central Florida, Lisa A. Mccauley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization is accelerating in the United States and is contributing to fragmentation of natural habitats, causing changes in species composition and declines in native species. Human population growth in Orlando is typical of growth in the southeastern United States and throughout the range of cypress (Taxodium distichum). Orlando has numerous isolated cypress wetlands, called cypress domes, and many remain among the current urbanized area. This makes Orlando ideal to study the effects of urbanization on cypress domes. Specifically, I tested how urbanization and its effects on fragmentation, hydrology, and fire regime) affected (a) the numbers and spatial pattern of cypress …
Synthesis, Characterization And Antibacterial Activity Of Silver Embedded Silica Nanoparticle/Nanogel Formulation, Roseline Menezes
Synthesis, Characterization And Antibacterial Activity Of Silver Embedded Silica Nanoparticle/Nanogel Formulation, Roseline Menezes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The antibacterial property of silver (Ag) has been known since ancient time. It is reported in the literature that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibit improved antibacterial properties in comparison to silver ions of equivalent metallic Ag concentration. Such improvement in antibacterial activities is due to the high surface area to volume ratio of AgNPs (which facilitates interaction with the bacterial cells), increased release of silver ions and direct intra-cellular uptake of AgNPs leading to localized release of Ag ions. To date, over 300 consumer products containing AgNPs are available in the market and the inventory is rapidly expanding. The antibacterial efficacy …

Expression And Functional Evaluation Of Exendin 4 Fused To Cholera Toxin B Subunit In Tobacco Chloroplast To Treat Type 2 Diabetes, Ramya Nityanandam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes has been steadily increasing around the globe. Glucagon like peptide (GLP-1), a powerful incretin increases insulin secretion in a glucose dependent manner. But GLP-1 is subjected to rapid enzymatic degradation (half-life: 2 min in circulation). The commercially available GLP-1 analog, exenatide has a longer half life with potent insulinotropic effects (about 2.4 hr) which requires cold storage and daily subcutaneous injections. In this study, exendin 4 (EX4), lizard derived GLP-1R agonist, was expressed as cholera toxin B subunit (CTB)-fusion protein in chloroplasts of tobacco to facilitate transmucosal delivery in the gut by utilizing the …
Direct, Hands-On Or Inquiry Instruction A Study Of Instructional Sequencing And Motivation In The Science Classroom, Jamie Vander Wiede
Direct, Hands-On Or Inquiry Instruction A Study Of Instructional Sequencing And Motivation In The Science Classroom, Jamie Vander Wiede
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Currently, a debate exists between the strengths and weaknesses of direct and inquiry instruction. Inquiry instruction is related to positive effect on learner motivation whereas supporters of direct instruction point to its ability to adequately support learners’ working memories (Hmelo-Silver, Duncan, & Chinn, 2007; Kirschner, Sweller, & Clark, 2006; Kuhn, 2007; Sweller, 1988). This study examined the possibility of combining the best features of both inquiry and direct instruction by sequencing them together. A two-part lesson on electrical circuits was presented in three separate sequences of instruction to middle school students to determine if differences in student motivation and academic …
Media Effects On Body Image In The Context Of Environmental And Internal Influences What Matters Most?, Kristen E. Vanvonderen
Media Effects On Body Image In The Context Of Environmental And Internal Influences What Matters Most?, Kristen E. Vanvonderen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Media effects on body dissatisfaction is a long-studied issue; however, aspects of the research – such as those regarding cultivation theory and its effects on body image – are unclear or incomplete. This study attempts to clarify the relationship between cultivation and body dissatisfaction. Besides cultivation, social comparison theory is also examined because upward comparisons with media images and peers can shape and reinforce body image attitudes as well. Additionally, the study examines the connection between media and body dissatisfaction by looking at a broader social context – one that includes other social/environmental influences, such as peer and parental attitudes, …
Expression Of Trichoderma Reesei Beta]-Mannanase In Tobacco Chloroplasts And Its Utilization In Lignocellulosic Woody Biomass Hydrolysis, Pankaj M. Agrawal
Expression Of Trichoderma Reesei Beta]-Mannanase In Tobacco Chloroplasts And Its Utilization In Lignocellulosic Woody Biomass Hydrolysis, Pankaj M. Agrawal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lignocellulosic ethanol offers a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuels. One among the major limitations in the lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis is unavailability of efficient and environmentally biomass degrading technologies. Plantbased production of these enzymes on large scale offers a cost effective solution. Cellulases, hemicellulases including mannanases and other accessory enzymes are required for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars. β- mannanase catalyzes endo-hydrolysis of the mannan backbone, a major constituent of woody biomass. In this study, man1 gene encoding β-mannanase was isolated from Trichoderma reesei and expressed via the chloroplast genome. PCR and Southern hybridization analysis confirmed the site-specific …
The Effects Of Presentation Mode And Pace On Learning Immunology With Computer Simulation A Cognitive Evaluation Of A Multimedia Learning Resource, Radakovich Kristy Bradley
The Effects Of Presentation Mode And Pace On Learning Immunology With Computer Simulation A Cognitive Evaluation Of A Multimedia Learning Resource, Radakovich Kristy Bradley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multimedia learning tools have the potential to benefit instructors and learners as supplemental learning materials. However, when such tools are designed inappropriately, this can increase cognitive taxation and impede learning, rendering the tools ineffective. Guided by the theoretical underpinnings provided by cognitive load theory and the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, this study sought to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of a multimedia simulation tool aimed at teaching immunology to novices in an instructional setting. The instructional mode and pace of the tool were manipulated, the three levels of each variable yielding nine experimental groups. The effects of mode and pace …
Modeling Transport And Protein Adsorption In Microfluidic Systems, Craig Finch
Modeling Transport And Protein Adsorption In Microfluidic Systems, Craig Finch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mass transport limitations and surface interactions are important phenomena in microfluidic devices. The flow of water is laminar at small scales and the absence of turbulent mixing can lead to transport limitations, especially for reactions that take place at surfaces. Microscale devices have a high ratio of surface area to volume, and proteins are known to adsorb preferentially at interfaces. Protein adsorption plays a significant role in biology by mediating critical processes such as the attachment of cells to surfaces, the immune response and the coagulation of blood. Simulation tools that can quantitatively predict transport and protein adsorption will enable …
The American School Discipline Debate And The Persistence Of Corporal Punishment In Southern Public Schools, David M. Hargrove
The American School Discipline Debate And The Persistence Of Corporal Punishment In Southern Public Schools, David M. Hargrove
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation examines the history of American school discipline and corporal punishment in southern public schools. Pedagogical literature, court reports, and popular fiction show that school discipline was a controversial topic throughout American history. The conflict over corporal punishment in schools led to a 1976 Supreme Court decision, Ingraham v. Wright, affirming the power of educators to use corporal punishment. When the school discipline debate peaked late in the twentieth century, most American schools no longer used corporal punishment but southern educators continued to paddle students, especially African American school children. By the twenty-first century, southern city schools adopted non-violent …
The Role Of Mental Health Professionals In Cases Of Child Sexual Abuse As Seen Through The Eyes Of Judges, S. Lynn Etheridge
The Role Of Mental Health Professionals In Cases Of Child Sexual Abuse As Seen Through The Eyes Of Judges, S. Lynn Etheridge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The involvement of Mental Health Professionals (MHPs) in cases of child sexual abuse (CSA) is complex and intimidating. There are legal rules and academic suggestions to guide the MHP in this endeavor, but in experience, these rules and suggestions are lacking. Current literature and research indicates that there is little if any direct knowledge on how judges perceive MHPs who testify before them in court. A qualitative phenomenological inquiry that directly interviefive judges about their perceptions of MHPs in cases of CSA was undertaken. The results indicate that MHPs should be more intentional about their choices regarding involvement in court, …
The Effects Of Seasonal Changes And Turbidity On Swimming Performance In White Crappie Pomoxis Annularis And Black Crappie Pomoxis Nigromaculatus., Caleb Joseph Gaston
The Effects Of Seasonal Changes And Turbidity On Swimming Performance In White Crappie Pomoxis Annularis And Black Crappie Pomoxis Nigromaculatus., Caleb Joseph Gaston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Factors that affect swimming performance in fish can also affect fitness. I tested the effects of time of day, season and turbidity on swimming performance in black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus and white crappie Pomoxis annularis. These closely related fish co-occur and their relative abundance is thought to be governed by the levels of turbidity in the form of suspended sediments. Black crappie predominate in clear bodies of water and exhibited significantly greater critical swimming speeds in clear water than did white crappie during spring days and winter nights. A significant reduction in critical swimming speed was observed in black crappie …
