The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of teenage prescription drug abuse in Jefferson County, Kentucky to gain a better understanding of the environment and characteristics of a teenager who abuses prescription drugs, and to gain insight into this situation through the perspectives of adult professionals who regularly work with teenagers. In-depth interviews were conducted with five professionals, and data analyses were performed to determine recurring themes. There were four primary emergent themes, including: profiling of a teenage prescription drug abuser; factors influencing likelihood of drug abuse; portfolio of mental, emotional, and social issues; and treatment processes. …

Delinquency : A Trajectory Analysis Of African-American Males., Wyatt Brown 1985- May 2011

Delinquency : A Trajectory Analysis Of African-American Males., Wyatt Brown 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The initial goals of this study include locating and identifying the taxonomic groups mentioned in Moffitt's (1993) (i.e. life-course persistent offenders, adolescent-limited offenders) using data from the National Longitudinal Survey 1997 (NLSY97). Further, this study compares the social demographics with the predictions of Moffitt (1993,1994) as her theory describes race, particularity those of African-American offenders. This study also examines the role of parental and peer relationships and their effect on the offender disparity among the typologies defined by Moffitt (1993). This study explores one hypothesis: there is a relationship between social bonds, particularly peer association and admittance into Moffitt's (1993) …

Sound Image And Organic Form In Höller's "Regen-Kanon" (Sphären, Iv)., Adriana Guzman 1977- May 2011

Sound Image And Organic Form In Höller's "Regen-Kanon" (Sphären, Iv)., Adriana Guzman 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Regen-Kanon" is the fourth of six pieces or "sound images" in the orchestral cycle Spharen, composed by York Holler between 2001 and 2006. The first four movements, namely "Wolkengesang" ("Song of the Clouds"), "Windspiel" ("Wind Chimes"), "Erdschichten" ("Layers of Earth"), and "Regen-Kanon" ("Rain Canon") are related to Holler's experiences of particular landscapes and consequently to associated impressions of nature, whereas the fifth and sixth movements, "Feuerwerk" ("Fireworks") and "Spharentrauer" ("Sorrow of the Spheres") convey different kinds of images. Holler cites the influence of the philosophers Empedocles, Henri Bergson, and Peter Sloterdijk on his musical language and on Spharen in particular. …

Mixed-Effects Models For Modeling Cardiac Functions And Treatment Effects., Hyejeong Jang May 2011

Mixed-Effects Models For Modeling Cardiac Functions And Treatment Effects., Hyejeong Jang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mixed-effects model is an efficient tool for analyzing longitudinal data. The random effects in mixed-effects model can be used to capture the correlations among repeated measurements within a subject. The time points are not fixed and all available data can be used in mixed-effects model provided data are missing at random. For this reason, we focus on applying mixed-effects models to the repeated measurements of cardiac function including heart rate, left ventricle developed pressure, and coronary flow in the Glutathione-S-transferase P (GSTP) gene knockout and wild-type mice following ischemial/reperfusion injury performed in the isolated, Langendorff-perfused heart. Cardiac function is measured …

Fluid Dynamic Analysis Of Flow In Orbiting Dishes And The Effects Of Flow On Shear Stress And Endothelial Cellular Responses., Amlan Chakraborty 1976- May 2011

Fluid Dynamic Analysis Of Flow In Orbiting Dishes And The Effects Of Flow On Shear Stress And Endothelial Cellular Responses., Amlan Chakraborty 1976-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work presents a novel comprehensive effort to understand the fluid dynamics within orbiting dishes and the effects of the resulting oscillating fluid flow on shear and endothelial cellular responses within the dishes. It is well documented that hemodynamic parameters, especially wall shear stress (WSS), have been shown to play important roles in altering various endothelial cellular responses, intracellular pathways and gene expression, and to have significant impacts on disease progression, such as atherosclerotic plaque development. In practice, wall shear stress (WSS) is oscillatory rather than steady due to the travelling waveform and varies across the surface of the dish …

The Collective Affiliation Of Community College, Commuter And Distance Education Students : Developmental Math And Dropout., Jeffrey Cody Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From 1988 to 2006, between 40% and 60% of all first-time community college students are referred to and enroll in at least one developmental education course; some colleges reported as high as 80 percent (e.g. Attewell, Lavin, Domina, & Levey, 2006; Bers & Smith, 1991; Bettinger & Long, 2005; Boughan & Clagett, 1995; Brawer, 1996). More students begin college less prepared in math than any other developmental area (e.g. ACT, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009; Attewell, Lavin, Domina, & Levey, 2006; Bettinger & Long, 2005; Cartnal, 1999). The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between a set …

High Dynamic Range Imaging For The Detection Of Motion., Jeffrey Robert Hay May 2011

High Dynamic Range Imaging For The Detection Of Motion., Jeffrey Robert Hay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High dynamic range imaging involves imaging at a bit depth higher than the typical 8-12 bits offered by standard video equipment. We propose a method of imaging a scene at high dynamic range, 14+ bits, to detect motion correlated with changes in the measured optical signal. Features within a scene, namely edges, can be tracked through a time sequence and produce a modulation in light levels associated with the edge moving across a region being sampled by the detector. The modulation in the signal is analyzed and a model is proposed that allows for an absolute measurement of the displacement …

How Collaborative The Collaboration? : Assessing The Collaboration Of Services For Juvenile Offenders., James G. Dickerson May 2011

How Collaborative The Collaboration? : Assessing The Collaboration Of Services For Juvenile Offenders., James G. Dickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Juvenile delinquency with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders has become an increasing problem within the United States. In part this can be attributed to the excessive number of delinquent youth entering the juvenile justice system with untreated substance abuse and/or mental health disorders-thus requiring juvenile justice to become a default system for substance abuse and mental health intervention and treatment services. In an effort to combat this problem, governmental, mental health, social support agencies, and school systems have formed interagency collaborations to provide more effective treatment services. One such interagency collaboration is the JETS Program, a court diversion …

Requirement Of Ssdelseed-Motif Of Escherichia Coli F1FO Atp Synthase In Antimicrobial Peptide Binding., Junior Kom Tayou May 2011

Requirement Of Ssdelseed-Motif Of Escherichia Coli F1FO Atp Synthase In Antimicrobial Peptide Binding., Junior Kom Tayou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

F1FO ATP synthase is a membrane bound enzyme capable of synthesizing and hydrolyzing ATP. Lately, α-helical cationic peptides such as melittin and melittin related peptide (MRP) were shown to inhibit E. coli ATP synthase. The proposed but unconfirmed site of inhibition is βDELSEED-motif formed by the residues 380-386, located at the interface of α/β subunit of ATP synthase. This project was a mutagenic analysis of βDELSEED-motif residues to understand the binding mechanism and mode of action of peptide inhibitors. The study addressed 2 main questions: Are the antibacterial/anticancer effects of these peptides related to their inhibitory action …

A Study Of Habitat Selection And Fluctuating Asymmetry Of Amybstoma Tigrinum At Henderson Island Wildlife Management Area In Jefferson County Tn., Christopher Scott Ogle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies were conducted on a population of tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum, at Henderson Island Wildlife Management Area in Jefferson County, TN. Tests were conducted to locate the nonbreeding habitat of the salamanders and to detect any difference in fluctuating asymmetry (FA) between larval populations in a large, permanent pond and an ephemeral wetland. Drift fences were installed with pitfall traps at selected locations around each pond to determine nonbreeding habitat use by adults. Most adult salamanders were found using a blackberry (Rubus sp.) dominated old-field, a grassy field, and a shrub-grass mix field, which were all adjacent …

Spatial Ecology Of The Spotted Salamander Ambystoma Maculatum During The Nonbreeding Season., Dale Patrick Ledford May 2011

Spatial Ecology Of The Spotted Salamander Ambystoma Maculatum During The Nonbreeding Season., Dale Patrick Ledford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spotted Salamanders, Ambystoma maculatum, are a widely distributed pond-breeding amphibian that spends an estimated 95% of its life in woodlands surrounding breeding ponds. Their terrestrial ecology remains poorly understood. Few studies have tracked the movement patterns of Spotted Salamanders, and they have given limited information on fine scale patterns. Studies of distribution around vernal pool environments have brought increased attention to their terrestrial ecology. To this end I tracked a sample of Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagged animals with a Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID). Quadrat-variance methods and a Poisson distribution were used to analyze spatial distribution patterns over …

Sulforaphane Prevents Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatic Injury In Mice., Robin H. Schmidt 1984- May 2011

Sulforaphane Prevents Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatic Injury In Mice., Robin H. Schmidt 1984-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables, is known to confer antioxidant protection in vivo. Rather than directly reacting with free radicals, however, SFN works by inducing Nrf2, a transcription factor that binds to the promoter regions of several known antioxidant genes and enhances detoxification. Because oxidative stress is a major contributor to acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatotoxicity, SFN may defend the liver against APAP overdose by activating the Nrf2 pathway and increasing endogenous antioxidant response. To test this hypothesis, mice were pre-treated with SFN for four days, injected with APAP on the fifth day, and sacrificed shortly thereafter. APAP overdose …

Species Composition, Demographics, And Ecosystem Services Of Residential Trees In Louisville, Kentucky., Shannon A. Scroggins May 2011

Species Composition, Demographics, And Ecosystem Services Of Residential Trees In Louisville, Kentucky., Shannon A. Scroggins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trees in urban residential neighborhoods provide valuable ecosystem services. Urban trees also face threats from disturbances, such as storms. In 2008, the Urban Forest Effects model was used to estimate abundance and species composition of residential trees and their ecosystem services in 10 of 26 council districts in Louisville, Kentucky. Ten tree species were found to compose half of the estimated 822,576 residential trees in the ten districts, with Celtis occidentalis being most numerous. The ability of sociodemographic and housing variables to predict the distribution of trees and ecosystem services was weak. The strongest relationships were found between % single …

Roles Of Vamp3 In Melanoma Cell Migration And Integrin Trafficking., Yaman Babi 1981- May 2011

Roles Of Vamp3 In Melanoma Cell Migration And Integrin Trafficking., Yaman Babi 1981-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Integrins are major receptors for cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix, and play key roles in various cellular processes including adhesion, migration, proliferation and survival. Apart from developmental and physiological events, integrins are involved in many pathological conditions including cancer metastasis. During cell migration, the exocytosis of integrins at the cell front contributes to the formation and stabilization of protrusions. Previous studies showed that VAMP3, a SNARE protein that mediates exocytosis, is important in integrin trafficking and cell migration. However, the mechanism by which VAMP3 participates in integrin trafficking is not clear. Since VAMP3 is over expressed in melanoma, the …

Motor Observation, Motor Performance, And Motor Imagery : An Erp Study., Eric Brian May 2011

Motor Observation, Motor Performance, And Motor Imagery : An Erp Study., Eric Brian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two major theoretical models, Direct Mapping and Functional Equivalence, suggest that the observation of action and imagery of action, respectively, involve activation of similar motor related areas. Despite the wealth of evidence that supports these two perspectives, the degree to which these motor-related actions overlap is still only vaguely defined. The present investigation sought to assess both the spatial and temporal characteristics of the brain activity involved in these motor related conditions. Specifically, the present study used ERP technology to assess the neural substrates of Motor Observation, Motor Performance, and Motor Imagery. Participants viewed images depicting two human grasping motions, …

Identification And Biochemical Characterization Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Type Iii Secretion Chaperone, Slc1, And Its Role In The Translocation Of The Invasion-Associated Effector Tarp., Amanda J. Brinkworth May 2011

Identification And Biochemical Characterization Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Type Iii Secretion Chaperone, Slc1, And Its Role In The Translocation Of The Invasion-Associated Effector Tarp., Amanda J. Brinkworth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen that utilizes a type III secretion system to enter mammalian cells and establish an intracellular niche. TARP, the translocated actin recruitment protein, is a chlamydial invasion protein known to be type III secreted by the metabolically inert elementary body upon docking to the mammalian cell surface. Because immediate secretion of TARP into host cells is necessary for entry, I hypothesized that a chlamydial chaperone binds to TARP and facilitates its translocation through the type III secretion apparatus. Most effector-binding type III secretion chaperones are small (14-18 kDa), have an acidic pI, and share …

An Immediate Survival Focus : Linking Substance Abuse, Fight, Flight, And Prosocial Behavior., George B. Richardson May 2011

An Immediate Survival Focus : Linking Substance Abuse, Fight, Flight, And Prosocial Behavior., George B. Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the United States substance abuse takes a toll that is costly in both economic and human terms. In 2005 we paid 467.7 billion dollars to address the consequences of substance abuse, and each year we have lost an estimated 537,000 of our fellows to substance abuse related causes. It is important that we identify and intervene upon the mechanisms translating risk factors for substance abuse into the related behaviors. This study synthesized life history theory and dual process models of cognition to produce an adaptive and cognitive framework for explaining substance abuse. An immediate survival focus was proposed as …

Biomechanics And Injury Assessment Of Household Falls In Children : Clinical, Anthropomorphic Surrogate, And Computer Simulation Studies., Angela Knight Thompson May 2011

Biomechanics And Injury Assessment Of Household Falls In Children : Clinical, Anthropomorphic Surrogate, And Computer Simulation Studies., Angela Knight Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pediatric short-distance falls, especially from beds or other furniture, are common false histories given by caretakers to cover up abusive trauma. However, short-distance falls are also a common occurrence in young children. Knowledge of the types and severity of injuries that can result from these short falls can aid clinicians in distinguishing between inflicted and non-inflicted injuries. Early detection of abuse may lead to prevention of further escalating injuries and, in some cases, prevent the death of the child. The purpose of this study was to describe relationships between biomechanical measures and injury potential in short-distance household falls. This study …

Variation In The Modified First Metatarsal Of A Large Sample Of Tapirus Polkensis And The Functional Implications For Ceratomorphs., Patrick Lawrence Hawkins May 2011

Variation In The Modified First Metatarsal Of A Large Sample Of Tapirus Polkensis And The Functional Implications For Ceratomorphs., Patrick Lawrence Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Mio-Pliocene age Gray Fossil Site of northeastern Tennessee has the largest collection of tapir postcranial skeletons in the world. Though representing a single species, a few localized structures show high variability. This paper deals with variation of the first metatarsal, which in tapirs was reduced as an early adaptation for running and then retrofitted to serve as a special origin for flexors and adductors of the proximal phalanges. The first metatarsal connects the medial ankle with a posterior process of the third metatarsal in tapiroids. In Tapirus indicus, T. webbi, and 6 out of 31 T. polkensis …

Population Structure Based On Age-Class Distribution Of Tapirus Polkensis From The Gray Fossil Site Tennessee., Matthew L. Gibson May 2011

Population Structure Based On Age-Class Distribution Of Tapirus Polkensis From The Gray Fossil Site Tennessee., Matthew L. Gibson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Individuals of Tapirus polkensis from the Gray Fossil Site exhibit an excellent level of preservation. Intact skulls collected from the site were arranged in a rough age class system separated into 7 categories based on the teeth present and amount of dental wear. Such an eruption series is useful for general comparisons amongst the individual tapirs; however, the classes do not represent an age in years due to a lack of data on living tapirs. Consequently, it is possible that some age classes may contain several years of a tapirs life, or comparatively only a few months. In this study …

Hydrolysis Of Concentrated Dilute Base Pretreated Biomass Slurries., Gregory A. Brockmann 1987- May 2011

Hydrolysis Of Concentrated Dilute Base Pretreated Biomass Slurries., Gregory A. Brockmann 1987-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Enzymatic hydrolysis is an important, but time limiting step in the process of converting biomass into ethanol. High solids concentrations are desired in order to minimize reactor size and achieve a higher concentration of glucose in the end product stream. However, higher solids concentrations lead to higher viscosities and hence, mixing and mass transfer becomes more difficult. In this study, a mixer designed to overcome the mass transfer limitations was used to conduct enzymatic hydrolysis of dilute-base pretreated corn stover, wheat, and miscanthus at high solids concentrations. This was done to determine if overcoming the mass transfer limitations would improve …

The Madness Is Catching : Transsexuality And The Cartesian Subject., Andrew Edward Clark 1986- May 2011

The Madness Is Catching : Transsexuality And The Cartesian Subject., Andrew Edward Clark 1986-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project uses the work of Michel Foucault and Lynne Huffer to examine the creation of the transsexual subject in 1950s American sexology through the Cartesian subject. I argue that medical professionals utilized the Cartesian subject as a standard to create and classify transsexuality as deviant. Further, through their joining, medicine and psychology positioned the transsexual subject in both madness and abnormality. Such a position leaves transsexuals in a subject position that cannot speak for itself and requires medical qualification. I demonstrate how such a subject position, created through medicalized discursive practices, carries over into judicial discourse. I find that …

On The Cranial Osteology Of Eremiascincus And Its Use For Identification., William B. Gelnaw May 2011

On The Cranial Osteology Of Eremiascincus And Its Use For Identification., William B. Gelnaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A persistent problem for Australian paleontology has been a lack of diagnostic characters for identifying lizard fossils. Eremiascincus is one of the most widespread genera in Australia, so it was examined for distinguishing features and how it fits into a model of skink evolution. Skulls of Eremiascincus were examined within five separate contexts: 1) a description of the cranial osteology, 2) a qualitative comparison of individual cranial elements of Eremiascincus to closely related Ctenotus, 3) a description of the cranial allometry in Eremiascincus using linear morphometrics, 4) using cranial morphometrics of skinks to deduce their phylogeny, and 5) using …

Molecular Modulation Of A-Subunit Visit-Dg Sequence Residue Asp-350 In The Catalytic Sites Of Escherichia Coli Atp Synthase., Sneha R. Jonnalagadda May 2011

Molecular Modulation Of A-Subunit Visit-Dg Sequence Residue Asp-350 In The Catalytic Sites Of Escherichia Coli Atp Synthase., Sneha R. Jonnalagadda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ATP Synthase is the fundamental means of cellular energy production in animals, plants, and almost all microorganisms. In order to understand the mechanism of ATP catalysis, critical amino acid residues involved in Pi binding have to be identified. The αVISIT-DG sequence at the interface of α/β subunits that contains residues from 345-351 is highly conserved and αAsp-350 has been chosen because of its negative charge side chain and its close proximity (~2.8 Å) to the known phosphate binding residue αArg-376. The mutant's αD350R, αD350Q, αD350A, αR376A/D, and αG351R/A/D were generated by site directed mutagenesis and several biochemical assays were performed …

The Occurrence Of An Abdominal Fauna In An Articulated Tapir (Tapirus Polkensis) Recovered From The Miocene Gray Fossil Site Northeast Tennessee., Shannon M. Mcconnell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of samples recovered from the abdominal area of an articulated tapir from the Late Miocene (4.5-7 million bp) Gray Fossil Site, revealed a rich palyno-fauna comprised of about 94% egg/oocyst-like structures and 6% pollen and other palynomorphs. In addition, a tight grouping of six hickory nuts (Carya) was recovered from the same area suggesting that the samples represent the abdominal contents. The analysis of a sample from immediately outside the tapir produced a sample with 98% pollen and less than 0.5% egg-like structures. The size, shape, and general morphology of egg-like structures were analyzed with light …

An Implementation Of A Multi-Touch Draw-A-Secret Password Schema For Windows-Based Computers., Matthew Lichtenberger Apr 2011

An Implementation Of A Multi-Touch Draw-A-Secret Password Schema For Windows-Based Computers., Matthew Lichtenberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Draw A Secret password systems have recently come into vogue, primarily in the role of protecting a user’s cellular smart phone from external infiltration in lieu of a password. However, these password systems are only enabled for single touch operation; that is to say, a user may only draw one pattern, with only one finger. Brute forcing these passwords thereby becomes trivial in the context of password complexity. This thesis implements a Draw A Secret system utilizing consumer-grade video hardware to collate multiple patterns synchronously and then authenticate the user at a later point. Care has been given to properly …

Promoting Smooth School Transitions For Children In Foster Care, Ghyslyn T. Laviolette Mar 2011

Promoting Smooth School Transitions For Children In Foster Care, Ghyslyn T. Laviolette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Children in foster care move two times per year on average. School records are not always transferred in a timely manner, which leads to a lack of services. Schools often are not aware of the legal issues surrounding foster care, such as who has legal rights to sign field trip permission slips or consent for educational evaluations. This study led to the development of an informational guideline as to how best support the school transition process for children in foster care. The Delphi technique was used to enlist the expertise of four respondent groups: foster parents, Guardians ad Litem, school …
