Carbon-Sulfur Bond Formation/Cleavage Reactions Of Metal-Stabilized Thiyl Radicals By Electrochemical And Chemical Methods., Kagna Ouch Sampson 1983- May 2012

Carbon-Sulfur Bond Formation/Cleavage Reactions Of Metal-Stabilized Thiyl Radicals By Electrochemical And Chemical Methods., Kagna Ouch Sampson 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The oxidation of metallothiolates is complicated by "non-innocence" or potential redox activity of sulfur to yield thiyl (RS•) radicals. In some instances, the one-electron oxidation of metal thiolates yields a product with the unpaired electron nearly equally delocalized between metal and sulfur such that, a specific site of oxidation cannot be defined. We refer to these complexes as metal-stabilized thiyl radicals. This dissertation explores reversible carbon-sulfur bond formation between metal-stabilized thiyl radicals and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Oxidation of the metal thiolate precursors [Ru(DPPBT)3]- Ru-l, and Re(DPPBT)3, Re-l, (DPPBT = diphenylphosphino-benzenethiolato), generates reactive species add with alkenes, alkynes, and dienes to yield …

Data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were used to examine factors that influence emotional distress in older adults with cancer, arid to learn whether these distress trajectories are different from older adults without cancer. The model investigated the influence of life course factors, internal, external and health-related resources on distress over eight years among a nationally representative sample of older adults ages 50-91. Methods: This longitudinal panel study tested a multilevel random intercept multinomial ordered categorical model with a two-nested-Ievel structure using empirical Bayes Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) estimation. The model examined individual differences in distress over …

Driving Microfluidic Flows With Three Dimensional Electrodes., Yehya Mohamed Senousy 1982- May 2012

Driving Microfluidic Flows With Three Dimensional Electrodes., Yehya Mohamed Senousy 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most of the structures in submillimeter-scale engineering are created from thin films, making them essentially two-dimensional (2D). Significant work has been done to fabricate 3D structures using self-folding, a deterministic form of self-assembly, and three dimensional lithographic and non-lithographic patterning. The objective of this work is to propose different fabrication and patterning strategies of 3D structures used as pumping electrodes for micro fluidic applications. 3D electrodes drive flows over the whole channel height while 2D electrodes stay near one wall. The first application of the 3D electrodes is mixing chemical or biological samples with reagents for chemical analysis which is …

Genetic Polymorphisms In The Folate Metabolizing Pathway And Breast Cancer Survival., Nandita Das May 2012

Genetic Polymorphisms In The Folate Metabolizing Pathway And Breast Cancer Survival., Nandita Das

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Genes in folate metabolizing pathway are responsible for modulating key enzymes in folate metabolisms necessary for DNA synthesis and repair and influence DNA methylation. Irregularity in DNA methylation may modify tumor phenotype response to chemotherapy and abnormal DNA synthesis, and repair may lead to carcinogenesis. This dissertation project tested the hypothesis that the key genes in the folate metabolizing pathway, namely Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) , betaine-homocysteinemethyltransferase (BHMT) , 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine (MTR), 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase reductase (MTRR) , and serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT1) and folate receptor 1 (FOLR1) influences all- cause and breast cancer-specific mortality and the association between the genes in the folate …

Applications Of Solid State Nmr To Cardiolipin And Elastin., Tatiana Victorovna Krivokhizhina 1981-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation has five chapters. Following an introduction, chapter two describes an investigation of the hypothesis that cardiolipin has a proton storage function in mitochondrial membranes. Chapters three and four present a novel NMR study of the elastic mechanism in elastin. Directions for the future research are given in the last chapter. To investigate the hypothesis that cardiolipin has a proton storage function, we have used 31p, 1H and 13C NMR. A single axially symmetric 31p pattern with reversed anisotropy compared to the static pattern is observed from pH 4 to 9 for tetraoleoyl cardiolipin (TOCL). This confirms that (a) …

Development Of A Hydrogel/Polypyrrole Interpenetrating Network For A Potential Application As An Artificial Cardiac Muscle., James J. Lee 1978- May 2012

Development Of A Hydrogel/Polypyrrole Interpenetrating Network For A Potential Application As An Artificial Cardiac Muscle., James J. Lee 1978-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydrophilic and conductive characteristics in polymers are mutually exclusive of each other. Hydrophilic polymer properties allow absorption of water up to several magnitudes above their dry weight. However, due to their molecular structure, they are not inherently conductive without the aid of a conductive element. Conductive polymers have molecular structures which permit current transfer via a series of delocalized electrons along the polymer backbone. Conversely, due to their organic nature, they are very hydrophobic and will not readily interact with hydrophilic elements. The motivation of this dissertation was to develop a biocompatible material that could potentially support the muscle like …

Co-Option And Adaptation Of Novel Gene Duplications For Pheromone Activity In A Dusky Salamander., Kari Anne Leichty 1987- May 2012

Co-Option And Adaptation Of Novel Gene Duplications For Pheromone Activity In A Dusky Salamander., Kari Anne Leichty 1987-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For more than a hundred million years, male plethodontid salamanders have utilized non-volatile, proteinaceous courtship pheromones to regulate female mating receptivity and promote mating success. These pheromones - which are delivered after courtship has commenced and do not act as chemical attractants - are delivered from a male's submandibular (mental) gland to the female salamander either by an olfactory mode or transdermally. For approximately 20 years, research on plethodontid courtship pheromones has focused on those involved in olfaction, using the red-legged salamander (Plethodon shermani) as a model. However, the olfactory system is a relatively recent adaptation (~20 million years ago) …

Learning From Graphically Integrated 2d And 3d Representations Improves Retention Of Neuroanatomy., Farah Naaz May 2012

Learning From Graphically Integrated 2d And 3d Representations Improves Retention Of Neuroanatomy., Farah Naaz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visualizations in the form of computer-based learning environments are highly encouraged in science education, especially for teaching spatial material. Some spatial material, such as sectional neuroanatomy, is very challenging to learn. It involves learning the two dimensional (2D) representations that are sampled from the three dimensional (3D) object. In this study, a computer-based learning environment was used to explore the hypothesis that learning sectional neuroanatomy from a graphically integrated 2D and 3D representation will lead to better learning outcomes than learning from a sequential presentation. The integrated representation explicitly demonstrates the 2D-3D transformation and should lead to effective learning. This …

Perceptions Of Gender In Young Consumers Of Animated Films., Katherine Barnes 1980- May 2012

Perceptions Of Gender In Young Consumers Of Animated Films., Katherine Barnes 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender stereotyping of two animated films by boys and girls (N=25). Based on Bern's (1983) gender schema theory, it was hypothesized that children would stereotype Aladdin as being for males and Pocahontas as being for females, based on the gender of the lead character. Interviews with participants (five to six years old) revealed that they did not gender stereotype the two films. A majority of both boys and girls liked the two films and felt they were for boys and girls. However, they did not think a girl could rescue another …

Parasitic Nematodes In Humans : Exploring The Host-Parasite Dynamic Through Historical, Biological, And Public Health Evaluations Of Infection., Erin Christine Welsh 1987-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigated infection dynamics of parasitic nematodes at both the population and individual levels by exploring evolutionary and historical aspects of infection as well as how host-parasite interactions influence virulence. In particular, this thesis sought to answer questions of how host populations have influenced the spread of infection and how transmission determines infection virulence, with a final goal of understanding how eradication programs for parasites can be developed or improved with this knowledge. The host-parasite dynamic was explored throughout history, with particular focus on the ways host populations have shaped infection distribution in present, historic, and prehistoric times. Then, …

"What Do You Mean I'M A Slut?!?!" : Deconstructing The Definitions Of Promiscuity Of The Collective Conscience Using Concepts From Labeling Theory And Biopower., Joshua O. Corum May 2012

"What Do You Mean I'M A Slut?!?!" : Deconstructing The Definitions Of Promiscuity Of The Collective Conscience Using Concepts From Labeling Theory And Biopower., Joshua O. Corum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term "promiscuity" is often used in academic literature and pejoratively proliferated among society at large. The definition of promiscuity has not been clearly and consistently defined within research and varies significantly from person to person. However, both research and society continue to utilize this term with the assumption of a universal meaning. This study investigated how individuals construct their personal definition of promiscuity and how the subsequent label is applied to others. This thesis also examined how the definition of promiscuity is constructed within the collective conscience and how social institutions influence that definition. The relationship between the collective …

The Budget Gap : Gender Discrimination In The U.S. Federal Budget Process, 1962-2011., Kevin Fahey May 2012

The Budget Gap : Gender Discrimination In The U.S. Federal Budget Process, 1962-2011., Kevin Fahey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The persistent private sector wage gap between men and women is one of the more intractable deficiencies of modem American society. It may be symptomatic of male privilege, a theory that outlines pervasive, ubiquitous discrimination that favors men from birth until death. However, egalitarian wage laws passed by Congress rigidly enforce equal pay for equal work at the highest echelons of public service, including Congress, the Cabinet, and the presidency. Is male privilege likely to manifest despite such legislation? If we assume that members of the Cabinet are lobbyists or representatives of their agencies, with Congress as the constituent, pervasive …

Microfabricated planar solar cells with an active solar collection area of 0.04cm2 were fabricated on n-type silicon wafers to test the viability of sputtered amorphous thin film photovoltaics for potential use in amorphous multijunction cells or inexpensive laser detectors. Several variants based on the same photovoltaic cell design were produced using amorphous silicon, amorphous germanium, and amorphous germanium-tin to explore band gap depression phenomenon in amorphous thin films that had been previously described in crystalline germanium-tin and germanium-silicon-tin alloys. UV/VIS spectroscopy and Tauc Plot band gap analysis indicated that tin inclusion led to band gap depression of 0.046 eV for …

Trapping Of Nanoparticles With Dielectrophoretic Nano-Probes., Nicholas Wood May 2012

Trapping Of Nanoparticles With Dielectrophoretic Nano-Probes., Nicholas Wood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is an electrokinetic force capable of attracting or repelling neutrally charged particles due to a non-uniform electric field [1, 2]. Positive dielectrophoresis attracts particles in the region of the highest electric field gradient; negative dielectrophoresis repels particles from the region of the highest electric field gradient. The dielectrophoretic force is directly proportional to the square of the electric field gradient, as well as the cube of the radius of the particles involved. As particles decrease in size, the gradient of the electric field must increase rapidly in order to capture or repel the particles. The intense electric field …

Nanoscale Diamond And Carbon Materials And Architectures For Field Emission And Thermionic Energy Conversion., Santoshrupa Dumpala May 2012

Nanoscale Diamond And Carbon Materials And Architectures For Field Emission And Thermionic Energy Conversion., Santoshrupa Dumpala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

More than 50% of the total energy produced is typically rejected in the form of waste heat from various processes. The grand challenge is that most of this waste heat is released at temperatures much lower than 1000 C, which makes it difficult to recover it using traditional methods which require higher operating temperatures for thermal energy conversion. In addition, these traditional methods involve different intermediate processes and do not offer direct conversion into electricity. In this regard, thermal energy conversion through thermionic emission can offer direct conversion of waste heat into electricity with highest theoretical efficiency. So, waste heat …

Cloning, Expression, And Biochemical Characterization Of Recombinant Putative Glucosyltransferases Clone 3 And 8 From Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisi), Deborah Hayford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The grapefruit plant, Citrus paradisi, tends to accumulate high levels of flavonoid glycosides such as flavanones and flavones. Flavonoids have a vast array of important functions in plants and also in humans. Glucosyltransferases (GTs) are enzymes responsible for glucosylation reactions. In our pursuit to study the structure and function of flavonoid GTs, we have used molecular approaches to identify, clone, express, and functionally characterize the enzymes. This research was designed to test the hypothesis that PGT3 is a flavonoid glucosyltransferase and is subject to biochemical regulation. PGT3 has been tested for GT activity with compounds representing subclasses of flavonoids …

Prelamin A Influences A Program Of Gene Expression In Regulation Of Cell Cycle Control, Christina N. Bridges May 2012

Prelamin A Influences A Program Of Gene Expression In Regulation Of Cell Cycle Control, Christina N. Bridges

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The A-type lamins are intermediate filament proteins that constitute a major part of the eukaryotic nuclear lamina—a tough, polymerized, mesh lining of the inner nuclear membrane, providing shape and structural integrity to the nucleus. Lamin A (LA) filaments also permeate the nucleoplasm, providing additional structural support, but also scaffolding numerous tethered molecules to stabilize, organize, and facilitate molecular interactions to accomplish critical functions of cellular metabolism. Over the past 2 decades, much attention has been focused on roles of LA in maintenance of nuclear structural integrity. Only since the late 1990s have scientists discovered the devastating effects of LA gene …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that is prevalent throughout the world. It is believed that 5% of school aged children suffer from ADHD, with some estimates indicating as high as 10% may suffer from the disorder. Primarily, three subtypes of ADHD have been associated with certain electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities. The most common treatment for ADHD is medication. However, neurofeedback is considered an efficacious treatment for ADHD. It is proposed that neurofeedback training aimed to mitigate inattention and low arousal in ADHD will be accompanied by changes in EEG bands' relative power. DATA COLLECTION: Patients were 18 children …

Terrestrial ecosystems are shaped by natural disturbances such as wildland fire. In the intermountain western United States, forests, shrub and grasslands adapt to repeated fires. An important long-term legacy of wildland fires is black C (BC) commonly referred to as char or charcoal. Black C is a recalcitrant C form that has been long known to influence soil physical, chemical, and biological processes that they vary across landscapes and over time. The objective of this research is to address two key areas in the emerging field of ecosystem BC research; 1) how much BC as charcoal C is formed per …

A Critique Of The Neoclassical And A Revision Of The Keynesian Theories Of Employment, Yang Liu Mar 2012

A Critique Of The Neoclassical And A Revision Of The Keynesian Theories Of Employment, Yang Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The neoclassical theory of employment fails to apply to modern capitalism since it claims that unemployment is necessary all voluntary. Its problems are pointed out by Keynes. But, if we look at Keynes’s system, we find that an essential explanation about why modern capitalism suffers from weak demand is not provided. To answer this question an alternative consumption theory is needed. Levine’s consumption theory well explains the condition of under-consumption. Furthermore, a deep problem of capitalism reveals itself: the production format and the distribution pattern of capitalism result in a huge income discrepancy between the working-class and the capitalist-class and …

Dubious Role Of Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis In Pathogenesis Of Type I Diabetes, Saisathya Thanigachalam Jan 2012

Dubious Role Of Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis In Pathogenesis Of Type I Diabetes, Saisathya Thanigachalam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (TIDM) is a chronic disorder in which the insulin producing beta cells are selectively self-destroyed. Although the etiology of the disease has not been determined, genetic dispositions such as SLC11A1 polymorphism in suffering patients have been reported. The role of pathogenic microorganisms such as Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in TIDM has also been recently debated. MAP is already known to cause paratuberculosis in cattle and now it is a strong suspect of causing autoimmune diseases in humans such as Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune Thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune diabetes. We hypothesis that molecular …

Community Participation And Travel Choice: An Analysis Of Central Florida New Urban And Conventional Suburban Residents, Laura P. Mikovsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between the built environment and social and transportation outcomes when comparing traditional and conventional suburban neighborhoods, but much remains to be learned about whether New Urbanism can produce similar results. Among studies where new urban neighborhoods have been assessed, most have centered on regions with highly-utilized public transit systems and with climates that are amenable to utilitarian physical activity. This research sought to build on the existing research base through direct comparison of new urban and conventional suburban neighborhoods in central Florida, a region with an under-developed transit system and a climate that renders …

Transplantation Of Pluripotent Stem Cells Confers Cardiac Protection In Dox-Induced Heart Failure Through Notch-1 Pathway, Hilda Merino-Chavez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Doxorubicin (DOX) is the antineoplastic drug of preference used to treat a wide variety of malignancies, with high survival rates among treated patients. However, the benefits of this drug have become less appealing due to the side effects that occur such as DOX-induced cardiomyopathy (DIC) and an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the therapeutic options to treat DIC. In this context, adult stem cells have been used as a source to reduce cardiomyocyte apoptosis in DIC; however, the effects of transplanted embryonic stem (ES) cells and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Women are currently underrepresented in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The purpose of this thesis is to explore how this underrepresentation translates to a gender gap in the field of technical communication and how this gap causes women to challenge the predominant objectivist paradigm in the field. Through an investigation of peer-reviewed journal articles, periodicals, critical theory, and articles published in online magazines such as Slate, I identify the gendered nature of modern technology and discuss to what extent a shift in the predominant paradigm has occurred in the professional arena. In looking at several theoretical approaches …
