The Negative Impact Of Trips On Gender Rights In Access To Health And Food In India: A Study Of The Dynamics Of Knowledge Economy And Neo-Medieval Governance, Kausiki Mukhopadhyay Jan 2014

The Negative Impact Of Trips On Gender Rights In Access To Health And Food In India: A Study Of The Dynamics Of Knowledge Economy And Neo-Medieval Governance, Kausiki Mukhopadhyay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Southern developing nations are increasingly emulating the knowledge economy followed by the developed nations of the North. This paradigm is characterized by the signature feature of the regime of TRIPS or individualized legal patents, particularly bio-patents developed through biotechnology in pharmaceutical and agriculture. It is also characterized by corporate social responsibility as a market mode of governance of development and increasing state retrenchment from delivery of public welfare. This form of economy is embedded in multilayered governance of neo-medieval governance where states and corporations tussle for the right to define growth and equity. This thesis argues that such a mode …

This research project expands academic understandings of queer of color subjectivity through the critical investigation of queer gender performance and its pedagogical potential for queer communities. With queer theories of color, critical communication pedagogy, and public pedagogy theories providing support, I utilize qualitative interviews fore-fronting poetic transcription of personal narratives in order to explore how queer gender performers of color engage in intersectional queer negotiations of identities and provide new possibilities for the everyday performance of queer identities. I call upon existing scholarship in queer gender performance in order to prove the centrality of such performances to queer social life, …

Comparison Of Reading Development Across Socioeconomic Status In The United States, Beatriz Michelle Macdonald Wer Jan 2014

Comparison Of Reading Development Across Socioeconomic Status In The United States, Beatriz Michelle Macdonald Wer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is well known that higher parental socioeconomic status (SES) predicts better child reading outcomes, but little work has been done to unpack this finding. The main overall question addressed by this project was whether cognitive models of the two main reading outcomes, single word reading (SWR) and reading comprehension (RC), performed similarly across levels of parental SES. The current study predicted a differential relation between parental SES and both predictors and outcomes because of the known large relation between parental SES and child oral language development. Three questions examined the mediating effects of cognitive predictors on the relation between …

Off The Beaten Track: The Experiences Of Jamaican Student Athletes In Us Higher Education, Michelle Antoinette Rankine Jan 2014

Off The Beaten Track: The Experiences Of Jamaican Student Athletes In Us Higher Education, Michelle Antoinette Rankine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

International student athletes populating American colleges and universities have gained visibility and prestige due to their athletic and academic capabilities. International student athletes emerge from a variety of backgrounds. These backgrounds vary in terms of geographic origin, cultural orientation, and social custom. The students themselves also differ in the amount of change they, as individuals, experience during the migration process from their home countries to the United States. There have been many studies related to the traditional student athlete experience. However, recent literature fails to examine the experiences of international student athletes, and in particular, Jamaican student athletes, in terms …

Representing Race Responsibly: A Case Study Of The Social Responsibility Paradigm In Colorado Museums, Angela Rueda Jan 2014

Representing Race Responsibly: A Case Study Of The Social Responsibility Paradigm In Colorado Museums, Angela Rueda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although museums have moved towards more reflexive practice, misrepresentation continues to be a concern. How then can museums successfully represent racial and ethnic groups that have historically been marginalized or misrepresented? In this thesis I argue that with greater integration of the social responsibility paradigm--which argues that museums can be agents of social change-- museums may be able to improve representation. During the summer of 2013, I conducted field research that explored how the social responsibility paradigm was or was not being enacted at The History Colorado Center and Museo de las Americas. This thesis offers a critical analysis of …

Rho Gtpases In Neuronal Apoptosis And Neurodegeneration, Trisha Stankiewicz Jan 2014

Rho Gtpases In Neuronal Apoptosis And Neurodegeneration, Trisha Stankiewicz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several studies have identified Rho family GTPases (i.e. Rho, Rac, Cdc42) as mediators of diverse critical cellular processes, such as actin cytoskeleton remodeling, gene transcription, cell-cell adhesion, and cell cycle progression. However, more recent data highlight an essential role for Rho GTPases as regulators of neuronal morphology and neuronal survival. In particular, Rac GTPase generally induces neurite outgrowth and promotes neuronal survival while Rho GTPase typically provokes neurite retraction and induces neuronal apoptosis. However, the precise signaling pathways that regulate neuronal survival downstream of Rho GTPases and the potential involvement of dysregulated activity of Rho GTPases as a causative factor …

Impact Of Students' Perception Of Safety On Academic Success, Daniel Gittins Jan 2014

Impact Of Students' Perception Of Safety On Academic Success, Daniel Gittins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A student's perception of safety in a school will impact his or her academic achievement. If a student does not feel safe in a school, he or she will be distracted, and will have a diminished concentration span, lack of focus and increased anxiety, all of which will negatively impact his or her achievement and academic potential. It is important for educational leaders, therefore, to create cultures that are safe, welcoming, and conducive to a student's academic growth. To do this, educational leaders, at all levels of the school district--from district administrators, to building administrators, to teachers and other staff …

Stranger Species, Rachel Burns Jan 2014

Stranger Species, Rachel Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stranger Species is a collection of interconnected personal and lyrical essays that illustrate and dissect the biological and psychological forces that drive humans to act. While essays in the collection prove the narrator's need to believe that we are animals first and human beings second and that sex and persistence to survive are proof of our animalism, essays simultaneously counter-argue that humans-our emotions, weaknesses, and consciousness-are unique to our species, separating us from the animal world. Throughout the collection, fear resonates that we do not control our desires and ultimately our lives, that biology and our deep seeded psychological inadequacies …

Furthermore, as a result of the identity problem that faces each position, I suggest using the theory of liminality, communication …

Scripture And Self In Origen Of Alexandria's Exegetical Practice, Micah David Saxton Jan 2014

Scripture And Self In Origen Of Alexandria's Exegetical Practice, Micah David Saxton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I examine the nature of scripture and the self as presented by Origen of Alexandria. I argue that Christian scripture and the Christian self are constructed by exegetical practice; furthermore, in the case of Origen, I will demonstrate that Christian scripture and the Christian self are so closely related that it is best to speak of a scripture-self complex emerging out of his exegetical practice. I use a theory of structure as developed by William Sewell as a means to discuss both scripture and the self. As "structures," scripture and the self are composed of "resources" and …

Post-Transcriptional Shaping Of Neurons: The Role Of Mirnas And Fmrp-Interacting P-Body Components In Regulating Neuronal Structure, Breanna Symmes Jan 2014

Post-Transcriptional Shaping Of Neurons: The Role Of Mirnas And Fmrp-Interacting P-Body Components In Regulating Neuronal Structure, Breanna Symmes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Changes in synaptic structure in response to neuronal stimulation are believed to underlie the processes of learning and long-term memory. However, the mechanisms for these structural modifications are poorly understood. It is well-known that activity-dependent synaptic modifications rely upon new protein synthesis, and rapid new protein synthesis, at that. Therefore, it is widely believed that pools of messenger RNAs held in a state of translational repression are transcribed in a neuronal cell body prior to stimulation, and transported to the synapse, where they reside until stimulation occurs.

This study investigates the roles and interactions of translational repression mechanisms to better …

The Education Lorenz Curve: Exploring Education And Social Mobility In A Lorenz Curve Framework, Nichole D. Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within any society the level of social mobility, the distribution of income, and equality of opportunity work together to determine the ease with which a child born into poverty can make it to the middle class during his or her lifetime. Education plays a large part, if not the largest part, in the analysis of these areas within a given society. Therefore, an equal distribution of education among those born into all income levels is one key ingredient to ensuring that all children who are born into poverty get the same chance of succeeding in the workforce as their more …

Social Support And Affectionate Communication In Animal-Assisted Interventions: Toward A Typology And Rating Scheme Of Handler/Dog Messages, Amy Mccullough Jan 2014

Social Support And Affectionate Communication In Animal-Assisted Interventions: Toward A Typology And Rating Scheme Of Handler/Dog Messages, Amy Mccullough

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) are a treatment modality that incorporates a trained animal into a person's healing and learning process in order to benefit the person physically, emotionally and/or socially (Delta Society, 1996). From an interactional perspective, two mechanisms that may contribute to these health benefits are social support and affection exchange. Although there is growing evidence of the health and well-being benefits of AAIs, there remains a need for scientific research to understand more precisely the communicative and behavioral components that constitute a therapeutic intervention involving an animal (Kazdin, 2010). Additionally, there is a need to develop a means of …

Long-Term Changes In Four Plant Communities Along An Elevational Gradient In The Front Range Of Colorado, Gregory J. Sproull

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We surveyed four plant communities along an elevational gradient in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains for long-term overstory and understory changes. Our results were compared to those found in 1981 and 1996. We evaluated changes in succession, elevational species migration and range expansion, community diversity, and composition. We related temporal floristic shifts to prior literature on disturbance history at each site. Over time, all communities changed significantly, though in different manners. This analysis shows that plant communities are changing in dynamic and idiosyncratic ways that correspond to individualistic distribution shifts. Moreover, we exhibit the necessity of comprehensively …

Cascaded Plasmon Resonances For Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Response, Seyfollah Toroghi Jan 2014

Cascaded Plasmon Resonances For Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Response, Seyfollah Toroghi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The continued development of integrated photonic devices requires low-power, small volume all-optical modulators. The weak nonlinear optical response of conventional optical materials requires the use of high intensities and large interaction volumes in order to achieve significant light modulation, hindering the miniaturization of all-optical switches and the development of lightweight transmission optics with nonlinear optical response. These challenges may be addressed using plasmonic nanostructures due to their unique ability to confine and enhance electric fields in sub-wavelength volumes. The ultrafast nonlinear response of free electrons in such plasmonic structures and the fast thermal nonlinear optical response of metal nanoparticles, as …

The Role Of The B-Type Phospholipases In S. Cerevisiae: Function, Regulation, And Physiological Relevance In Lipid Homeostasis, Beth A Surlow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Membrane phospholipid synthesis and turnover is a continual process during normal cell growth. The turnover of the glycerophospholipids by B-type phospholipases (PLBs) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae results in the formation glycerophosphodiesters through a deacylation reaction. Here, I address several aspects of the glycerophospholipid deacylation, transport, and reutilization pathway in S. cerevisiae. First, I show the RAS GTPase-activating proteins, Ira1 and Ira2, are required for utilization of the glycerophosphodiester - glycerophosphoinositol (GroPIns) - as a phosphate source. Second, I demonstrate loss of the cell surface associated PLBs, Plb1-3, and/or utilization of GroPIns causes actin cytoskeleton defects and an increased cell size. For …
