A Cad System For Early Diagnosis Of Autism Using Different Imaging Modalities., Marwa Maher Tawfik Ismail
A Cad System For Early Diagnosis Of Autism Using Different Imaging Modalities., Marwa Maher Tawfik Ismail
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term “autism spectrum disorder” (ASD) refers to a collection of neuro-developmental disorders that affect linguistic, behavioral, and social skills. Autism has many symptoms, most prominently, social impairment and repetitive behaviors. It is crucial to diagnose autism at an early stage for better assessment and investigation of this complex syndrome. There have been a lot of efforts to diagnose ASD using different techniques, such as imaging modalities, genetic techniques, and behavior reports. Imaging modalities have been extensively exploited for ASD diagnosis, and one of the most successful ones is Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),where it has shown promise for the early diagnosis …
"The Quality Of Women's Intelligence" : Female Humanists In Renaissance Italy., Julie Myers-Mushkin
"The Quality Of Women's Intelligence" : Female Humanists In Renaissance Italy., Julie Myers-Mushkin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how the advent of humanism in Renaissance Italy impacted women, namely those who were raised within intellectual families and granted educational opportunities not before afforded to members of their sex. In quattrocento Italy, learned women began to circulate their writings and participate in the humanist milieu, and the intellectual lives and published works of these female humanists all in some manner contested Renaissance patriarchy and gender perceptions. As such, this thesis challenges the conception that the Renaissance further disenfranchised women and offers a framework for analyzing and appreciating the ways in which women participated in the academic …
Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Stabilities Of Radical Intermediates Formed During The Oxidation Of Melatonin, Constance E. Warden
Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Stabilities Of Radical Intermediates Formed During The Oxidation Of Melatonin, Constance E. Warden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Melatonin, a nontoxic natural antioxidant, is of interest as a possible spin trap for use in spectroscopic methods to observe and identify short-lived free radicals, which have been linked to oxidative stress that may result in serious health problems. However, the reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of melatonin to form the product N1-acetyl-N2-formyl-5-methoxykynuramine are still not well understood. Computational quantum chemistry studies have been done on four proposed reaction mechanisms, involving the following major intermediate structures: a dioxetane, an epoxide, a melatonin radical cation, and a spin radical adduct. Molecular geometries were optimized at the …

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant relationship between students who entered a Tennessee university for the first time in the fall of 2014 who had earned either Advanced Placement (AP) or dual enrollment credit regarding their college readiness and 1-year college retention. College readiness was defined by students’ American College Testing (ACT) sub scores in English, reading, and mathematics. The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) regulates the minimum sub score for each sub section that a student must obtain to be deemed college ready. College retention was defined by students who enrolled at …
Forgiveness And Suicidal Behavior In College Students: Cynicism And Psychache As Serial Mediators, Trever Dangel
Forgiveness And Suicidal Behavior In College Students: Cynicism And Psychache As Serial Mediators, Trever Dangel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research has long documented beneficial associations between forgiveness and numerous health outcomes; however, its relationship to suicidal behavior has been relatively neglected. Both cynicism, and psychache, or agonizing psychological pain, have displayed deleterious associations with suicidal behavior, but have rarely been incorporated into more comprehensive models of suicidal behavior. Recent work has resulted in the development of a theoretical model of the forgiveness-suicidal behavior association, which can incorporate several mediator variables including cynicism and psychache. The present study used an undergraduate sample of college students (N = 312) to test a serial mediation model of the cross-sectional associations between forgiveness, …
Elementary Principal Perceptions Of The Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model, Jason W. Vance
Elementary Principal Perceptions Of The Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model, Jason W. Vance
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model (TEAM) had been in a state of reform since being awarded the Race to the Top Grant. Few teachers admit that an evaluation influenced them significantly; additionally, few administrators agreed that when they evaluated a teacher, it did not significantly affect the teacher or students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the perceptions of building‑level principals regarding the effectiveness (i.e., increased teacher participation and quality) and efficiency (i.e., produces the required results) of the TEAM in regard to teacher evaluations. Four elementary school principals from East Tennessee participated in the study. The …

Structural And Functional Analysis Of Grapefruit Flavonol-Specific-3-O-Gt Mutant P145t, Sangam Kandel Mr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research is focused on the study of the effect of mutating proline 145 to threonine on the substrate and regiospecificity of flavonol specific 3-O-glucosyltransferase (Cp3GT). While the mutant P145T enzyme did not glucosylate anthocyanidins, it did glucosylate flavanones and flavones in addition to retaining activity with flavonols. HPLC was used for product identification and showed mutant P145T glucosylated naringenin at the 7-OH position forming naringenin-7-O-glucoside and flavonols at the 3-OH position. Homology modeling and docking was done to predict the acceptor substrate recognition pattern and models were validated by experimental results. In other related work, …
Restoring Relationship: How The Methodologies Of Wangari Maathai And The Green Belt Movement In Post-Colonial Kenya Achieve Environmental Healing And Women's Empowerment, Casey L. Wagner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effects of the colonial project in Kenya created multi-faceted damages to the land and indigenous people-groups. Using the lens of ecofeminism, this study examines the undergirding structures that produce systems such as colonization that oppress and destroy land, people, and other beings. By highlighting the experience of the Kikuyu people within the Kenyan colonial program, the innovative and ingenious response of Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement proves to be a relevant and effective counter to women's disempowerment and environmental devastation in a post-colonial nation. The approach of the Green Belt Movement offers a unique and accessible method for empowering …
A Novel Role Of Human Dna Damage Checkpoint Protein Atr In Suppressing Ca2+ Overload-Induced Parp1-Mediated Necrosis, Hui Wang-Heaton
A Novel Role Of Human Dna Damage Checkpoint Protein Atr In Suppressing Ca2+ Overload-Induced Parp1-Mediated Necrosis, Hui Wang-Heaton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) is well known for its regulatory role in DNA damage responses (DDR) as a checkpoint kinase that phosphorylates hundreds of protein substrates. However, its role in cellular non-DNA damage stress responses (NDDR) is unknown. Necrosis is one form of cell death and traditionally has been regarded as a passive and uncontrolled cell death. Recently, evidence has emerged to support the concept that necrosis also may occur in a programmed manner and that PARP1 can be a mediator. Active poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) hydrolyzes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to produce poly (ADP-ribose) (PAR) …
Prudery And Perversion: Domination Of The Sexual Body In Middle-Class Men, Women, And Disenfranchised Bodies In Victorian England, Ashley Barnett
Prudery And Perversion: Domination Of The Sexual Body In Middle-Class Men, Women, And Disenfranchised Bodies In Victorian England, Ashley Barnett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research argues that with the rise of the middle-class, Victorian England saw the development of a power model in which middle-class men, middle-class women and disenfranchised bodies of children and lower-class women suffered from the demands of bodily domination. Because the bodily health of middle-class men was believed to represent national health, it was imperative that he dominate his body, particularly with regard to sexual urges. Consequently, the bodies of women with whom he sought sexual release suffered from forms of bodily domination as well. Through an analysis of journals and private writings of those living in Victorian England, …

Factors Contributing To The Economic Self-Sufficiency Of At-Risk Foster Youth Who Have Aged Out Of Care, Alexzandra M. Hust
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Foster youth aging out of care encounter many struggles upon transitioning into adulthood, resulting in an increased risk of homelessness and adverse social, health, and financial outcomes. This study aimed to determine if various factors (environmental factors: education, mental health service, social support and personal factors: incarceration, substance abuse referral, and unplanned parenthood) were associated with indicators of economic self-sufficiency (full-time and part-time employment, housing stability, and use of financial, food, and housing assistance). Multiple logistic regressions were conducted to explore risk and predictive factors of each indicator of economic self-sufficiency with a sample of 265 19 year old foster …
Breeding Season Avian Community Composition And Prey Availability In Eucalyptus And Slash Pine Plantations Of Southwestern Louisiana, Elizabeth J. Messick
Breeding Season Avian Community Composition And Prey Availability In Eucalyptus And Slash Pine Plantations Of Southwestern Louisiana, Elizabeth J. Messick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The increased demand for wood products related to industries such as bioenergy and paper has resulted in a need for a consistent supply of raw materials. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) plantations have the potential to boost wood production for pulpwood and biomass feedstocks. Species characteristics such as rapid, indeterminate growth, coppice regrowth, resistance to disease and insects, and tolerance of a range of environmental conditions make these species successful short-rotation woody crops (SRWCs). Camden white gum (Eucalyptus benthamii), a more cold tolerant species, has made management of eucalyptus plantations viable in southern portions of the United States such …
Multipurpose Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Electrospun Fibers For The Prevention Of Hiv-1 And Hsv-2 Infections., Kevin Tyo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sexually transmitted infections affect hundreds of millions of worldwide. Both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1 and -2) and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) remain incurable, urging the development of new prevention strategies. While current prophylactic technologies are dependent on strict user adherence to achieve efficacy, there is a dearth of delivery vehicles that provide discreet and convenient administration, combined with prolonged-delivery of active agents. To address these needs, we created electrospun fibers (EFs) comprised of FDA-approved polymers, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and poly(DL-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL), to provide sustained-release and in vitro protection against HIV-1 and HSV-2. PLGA and PLCL EFs, incorporating the antiretroviral, tenofovir …
Sex, Sexuality And Sexual Practice For Trans Individuals And Their Romantic Partners., Kinton Rossman
Sex, Sexuality And Sexual Practice For Trans Individuals And Their Romantic Partners., Kinton Rossman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transgender populations demonstrate significant sexual diversity, with over three-fourths (77%) of transgender individuals identifying as sexual minorities (Grant et al., 2011); however, a majority of research on sex, sexuality, and sexual practice has focused exclusively on cisgender and heterosexual individuals and, perhaps more importantly, addressed these issues a heteronormative and cisnormative perspective (Nichols, 2014). Such frameworks have created significant gaps in research about sex, sexuality, and sexual practice for trans individuals including understanding how gender transition influences sex and sexuality and how trans individuals and their partners engage in sexual practice. The current study addressed these omissions in the literature …

The Role Of O-Glcnacase During Heart Failure., Sujith Dassanayaka
The Role Of O-Glcnacase During Heart Failure., Sujith Dassanayaka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Global augmentation of protein O-GlcNAcylation occurs in response to a myriad of stressors and confers a survival advantage at the cellular level. This protective phenomenon has been demonstrated to mediate cardioprotection through various in vitro and in vivo studies during ischemia-reperfusion, myocardial infarction, and oxidative stress; however, relatively little is known of the regulation of protein O-GlcNAcylation. Protein O-GlcNAcylation is regulated by two antagonistic enzymes, namely, O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) and O-GlcNAcase (OGA). Ablation of cardiomyocyte OGT, the enzyme that catalyzes the addition of O-GlcNAc to proteins, exacerbates cardiac dysfunction during infarct-induced heart failure (HF). However, little is known of the …
Materials Design And Band Gap Engineering Of Complex Nanostructures Using A Semi-Empirical Approach : Low Dimensional Boron Nanostructures, H-Bn Sheet With Graphene Domains And Holey Graphene., Cherno Baba Kah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will explore the potential of a semi-empirical Hamiltonian, developed by the research group at the University of Louisville, in predicting the existence of new families of low-dimensional boron nanostructures based on icosahedral α-B12 clusters, and in tuning the band gaps of h-BN sheets with graphene domains and holey graphene. This semi-empirical Hamiltonian models electron-electron and electron-ion interactions using environment-dependent (ED) functions, and ion-ion interactions via usual pairwise terms. Additional features of our approach are that it uses a linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) framework to describe the Hamiltonian and it calculates the charge distribution around a …

Peptoanaerobacter Stomatis Interactions With Neutrophils., Emeri Jimenez Flores
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Peptoanaerobacter stomatis is a newly appreciated taxon, present in high numbers in oral biofilms from periodontal patients. However, little is known about this organism’s potential virulence and its interaction with the host immune response. Therefore, to better understand the role of P. stomatis in periodontitis, we studied its interactions with neutrophils. Human neutrophils were challenged with P. stomatis strain CM2 or S. aureus AF488 (positive control) for 30 min. Bacterial internalization was examined by ImageStreamX imaging flow cytometry. Bacterial viability was assessed by colony-forming unit assays and Baclight assays. Phagocytosis-stimulated respiratory burst response was measured by flow cytometry. The fusion …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Marijuana is widely used in the United States for recreational and medicinal purposes. Despite the proposed beneficial effects of cannabis on certain medical conditions, there is also a concern there is also a concern over negative health consequences of marijuana smoking. Recently, cannabis use has been established as a dose related risk factor for chronic periodontitis. Although the induction / exacerbation of chronic periodontitis in marijuana users has been established epidemiologically, the mechanisms underlying such predisposition are still unknown. It has long been suggested that marijuana has anti-inflammatory properties, while human epithelial cells are known to express cannabinoid receptor type …
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2dm) Onset And "Remission"., Srikanth Tangelloju
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2dm) Onset And "Remission"., Srikanth Tangelloju
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressive disease condition. As the disease progresses the function of beta (β) cells (cells which regulate insulin) decline, thereby increasing the circulating blood glucose levels. If left unmanaged the disease progresses from onset to development of T2DM related complications and eventually death. When managed, in certain individuals, T2DM onset can be prevented and/or slowed down and in certain T2DM individuals, remission is observed. There are some known modifiable risk factors such as diet and physical activities that are associated with the speed and direction of progression, but much is still unknown. In …
Cardiovascular And Hematopoietic Responses To Volatile Benzene Exposure., Wesley Tyler Abplanalp
Cardiovascular And Hematopoietic Responses To Volatile Benzene Exposure., Wesley Tyler Abplanalp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rapid and recent increase in the global epidemic of diabetes and cardiovascular disease suggests a strong component of the environment is contributing. Benzene is a ubiquitous volatile pollutant generated by cigarette smoke, automobile exhaust, wildfires and industrial activities. Consequently, it is found in almost all urban and rural air samples. Benzene is known to cause hematotoxicity and its metabolism generates oxidative stress. Although, benzene has been studied for many years, few investigations have probed what influence benzene exposure may have on other physiological processes. Here we hypothesize that benzene metabolism by hepatic-CYP450 2E1 generates oxidative stress and inflammation, which …
Carnosine, A Therapeutic Potential For Critical Limb Ischemic., Adjoa Agyemang Boakye
Carnosine, A Therapeutic Potential For Critical Limb Ischemic., Adjoa Agyemang Boakye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Critical Limb ischemia (CLI) is a serious manifestation of peripheral artery disease. Advanced CLI patients are poor candidates for vascular surgeries. Numerous studies have shown that hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF1-α) plays an important role in recovery from murine hindlimb ischemia (HLI). HIF1-α is regulated by oxygen dependent prolyl hydroxylases (PHDs). Previous studies have shown that inhibition of PHDs by metal quenchers and viral delivery of HIF1-α improves blood flow to the ischemic limb. However, clinical trials with these therapies are largely negative partly because they do not address the underlying chronic oxidative stress. Based on recent observations that endogenous …
Air Pollution, Pulmonary Oxidative Stress, And The Endothelin System In The Development Of Cardiovascular Injury., Jordan B. Finch
Air Pollution, Pulmonary Oxidative Stress, And The Endothelin System In The Development Of Cardiovascular Injury., Jordan B. Finch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this project was to examine the role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) as a mediator in the pathway between air pollution exposure and the development of vascular injury. A human cohort and male mice (C57BL/6 and ecSOD-Tg) were used to evaluate changes in the ET-1 system in response to exposures of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Human ET-1 levels were significantly associated with environmental factors and markers of vascular change, but were decreased with increased PM2.5. No association was seen between ET-1 and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) except for EPC-4, possibly indicating a regulatory relationship with this specific population. In …
Effects Of Invasive Shrub Honeysuckle (Lonicera Maackii) And Forest Composition On Bird Communities In Woodland Stands., Katie Rae Lynch
Effects Of Invasive Shrub Honeysuckle (Lonicera Maackii) And Forest Composition On Bird Communities In Woodland Stands., Katie Rae Lynch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Invasive species pose a threat to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by decreasing biodiversity (Didham et al. 2005). Amur bush honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) has typically reduced native plant diversity and altered animal communities by influencing animal abundance and activity (Collier and Vankat 2002). This study was intended to determine whether honeysuckle density or other characteristics of forested stands influence avian diversity, whether impacts are seasonally dependent, and whether correlations exist between attributes of forested stands and honeysuckle density. In order to test the hypotheses, thirteen forest stands within the Louisville Metropolitan Area were selected. They had similar tree composition …
Developing A More Clinically-Relevant Mouse Model Of Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity., Cierra N. Sharp
Developing A More Clinically-Relevant Mouse Model Of Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity., Cierra N. Sharp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cisplatin is a nephrotoxic chemotherapeutic that causes acute kidney injury (AKI) in 30% of patients. Although recovery can occur after one episode of cisplatin-induced AKI, studies have indicated multiple episodes may lead to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD), an irreversible disease with no current treatments. The standard mouse model of cisplatin-induced AKI consists of one, high dose of cisplatin (> 20 mg/kg) that is lethal to the animal three days later. This model doesn’t accurately reflect the repeated dosing regimen patients receive, and doesn’t allow for long-term outcome studies of pathologies associated with CKD. We have developed a …
A Culturally-Sensitive Cognitive Model Of Worry In African American Youth., Allyn Elizabeth Richards
A Culturally-Sensitive Cognitive Model Of Worry In African American Youth., Allyn Elizabeth Richards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Our understanding of worry in children and adolescents has been increasingly enhanced over the past decade through the downward extension of adult cognitive models. Although our knowledge about the cognitive factors that place children at risk for worry has grown, little is known about these processes within African American youth. This is particularly notable given extant work suggesting that risk and protective processes are influenced by contextual factors. The current study reviews literatures regarding cognitive factors associated with worry and sociocultural factors salient to the African American context in order to inform a culturally-sensitive cognitive model of worry in African …
Isolation Of Egfr-Containing Early Endosomes., Julie A. Gosney
Isolation Of Egfr-Containing Early Endosomes., Julie A. Gosney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) that is an integral component of proliferative signaling. When activated by a ligand at the plasma membrane, EGFR undergoes clathrin-mediated endocytosis. This spatial regulation of the receptor is an important regulator of receptor expression as it mediates its degradation. Endocytosis also has implications on EGFR downstream signaling, though the details are not fully understood. The goal of this thesis is to develop a method to isolate early endosomes in order to study downstream effectors associated with activated EGFR in this compartment. HeLa cells were used to test various …
Explaining The Difference In The Self-Esteem Of Students With Learning Disabilities Who Receive Pull-Out Services And Those Who Do Not Receive Pull-Out Services In A Private School Setting., Brittany Ann Cox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Students with learning disabilities are a minority group in the private school setting. In order to accommodate students with learning disabilities, private schools provide pull-out services. Pull-out services involve students being pulled from the classroom to work with the resource teacher to receive various accommodations. Students who are eligible for accommodations are those who have been formally diagnosed with a learning disability or students who are in the process of being tested for a learning disability. While the special education setting has been the topic of a great deal of research, the research is lacking, nonetheless (Terman, Larner, Stevenson, & …
Structure-Function Analysis And Characterization Of Metalloproteins., Sen Yao
Structure-Function Analysis And Characterization Of Metalloproteins., Sen Yao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Metalloproteins are proteins that can bind at least one metal ion as a cofactor. They utilize metal ions for a variety of biological purposes, and are essential for all domains of life. Due to the ubiquity of metalloprotein’s involvement across these processes across all domains of life, how proteins coordinate metal ions for different biochemical functions is of great relevance to understanding the implementation of these biological processes. One of the most important aspects of metal binding is its coordination geometry (CG), which often implies functional activities. Most of the current studies are based on the assumption of previously reported …
