Formulation Development, Preclinical Testing, And Primary Packaging Optimization For Cannabinoids And Other Therapeutics, Pranjal Taskar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Through the process of drug development, a molecule goes through discovery screening; lead selection and optimization, ADME testing, toxicity profiling, dosage form determination, preclinical testing in an in vitro and in vivo setup, folloby clinical research, FDA review and approval until eventually it is manufactured in the determined dosage form and reaches the patient. At every point through this process, scientists actively work towards a smoother transition and a quick and safe approval of the molecule towards the next step. The different chapters in this research would cover various phases of drug development; from discovery stage to fill-finish and primary …

Physical And Chemical Trace Evidence From 3d-Printed Firearms, And Use Of A Quadcopter For Targeted Sampling Of Gaseous Mercury In The Atmosphere, Oscar Beauchamp Black
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My forensic research resulted in the first peer-reviepaper to address the forensic challenges presented by 3D-printed polymer firearms. The work involved a systematic approach to the analysis of evidence stemming from 3D-printed firearms filling a critical void in current forensic knowledge. We used DART-MS to characterize the polymer evidence left behind by 3D-printed firearms as well as an evaluation of pre-existing firearm and toolmark techniques and fingerprint analysis. We demonstrated that 3D-printed firearms leave behind characteristic polymer residue on cartridge cases bullets and the receiving surface which can be identified using DART-MS. The culmination of the work includes a database …
Bacterioplankton Biogeography Of The Mississippi River Basin, Jason Taylor Payne
Bacterioplankton Biogeography Of The Mississippi River Basin, Jason Taylor Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bacterioplankton are important structural and functional components of river networks yet their biogeographical patterns in these systems are largely unknown. Using Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene we characterized variation in bacterioplankton community alpha diversity (within-sample richness of operational taxonomic units OTUs) and beta diversity (between-sample differences in composition) (1) along a 1 300-km downstream reach of the Mississippi River (2) over a range of temporal scales in the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) and (3) along cross-sectional transects repeated monthly for six months across the LMR floodplain. Particle-associated assemblages were richer in bacterial OTUs and more productive than free-living …
Molecular Simulation Of Graphene Oxide (Go) Nanocarriers For Doxorubicin: Effects Of Ph And Go Pegylation On The Drug Loading, Retention, And Release, Mina Mahdavi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation as a powerful tool is used to investigate the graphene oxide (GO) based drug delivery system in the process of drug loading, drug carrying and drug release. Doxorubicin (DOX), a widely used anticancer drug, is used as a drug model. The effect of different parameters including pH levels and the oxidation level of GO sheets on the drug loading mechanism is broadly discussed in this study. The drug release from the GO sheet using pH stimulus is explored and results confirmed that GO can release DOX molecules at acidic pH level.

Environnmental Influences On Caribbean Octocoral-Symbiodiniaceae Symbioses, Mark Mccauley
Environnmental Influences On Caribbean Octocoral-Symbiodiniaceae Symbioses, Mark Mccauley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Caribbean octocoral colony is an assemblage of the octocoral host, dinoflagellate algae (family Symbiodiniaceae), bacteria and other microbes, together functioning as meta-organism (holobiont). Even though octocorals dominate many Caribbean reefs, compared to scleractinian corals, little is known about their biology under ambient or potentially stressful conditions. Of the nine species of octocorals (gorgonian corals, Order: Alcyonacea) studied, each had significantly different polyp behaviors, biochemical compositions, Symbiodiniaceae parameters, isotopic signatures, in addition to hosting distinct microbial assemblages. We identified multiple Symbiodiniaceae species (Breviolum minutum, Breviolum B41, Breviolum B1a and Breviolum B1i), inhabiting the gorgonians. These symbioses were temporally and …

Analysis Of Brevundimonas Subvibrioides Developmental Signaling Systems Reveals Unexpected Differences Between Phenotypes And C-Di-Gmp Levels, Lauryn Anne Sperling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The DivJ-DivK-PleC signaling system of Caulobacter crescentus is a signaling network that regulates polar development and the cell cycle. This system is conserved in closely related bacteria, including the sister genus Brevundimonas. Previous studies had shown unexpected phenotypic differences between the C. crescentus divK mutant and the analogous mutant of Brevundimonas subvibrioides, but further characterization was not performed. Here, phenotypic assays analyzing motility, adhesion, and pilus production (the latter characterized by a newly discovered bacteriophage) revealed that divJ and pleC mutants have mostly similar phenotypes as their C. crescentus homologs, but divK mutants maintain largely opposite phenotypes than …

Historical Groundwater Data Analysis Of The Wilcox Aquifers In Lafayette County, Mississippi, Adam Schildhammer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lafayette County, Mississippi, is located in the northern central part of the state and relies on groundwater resources for all of the municipal water needs in the county. The population is increasing in the county; therefore, groundwater withdrawals are as well. With such a high demand on groundwater, it is important to have an understanding of the historical trends of the groundwater levels to determine is the population is over pumping the available supply. The Meridian-upper Wilcox aquifer and the lower Wilcox aquifer are the two groundwater sources for the county. In order to fully understand the behaviors of these …
Predictors Of Behavioral Health Among Firefighters In Their Third Year Of Fire Service, Victoria Alicia Torres
Predictors Of Behavioral Health Among Firefighters In Their Third Year Of Fire Service, Victoria Alicia Torres
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Employee turnover is expensive, as job training can cost upwards of 30% of an employee’s annual salary (not including additional onboarding expenses; Boushey & Glynn, 2012). This is especially true among high stress, dangerous occupations that require specialized training such as firefighters (Envisage Technologies, 2016; Knoll, 2011; Patterson et al., 2010). Health status is a primary reason for job concerns that may lead to decline in job performance and employment separation (Hourani, Williams, & Kress, 2006; Virtanen, Kivimäki, Vahtera, Elovainio, Sund, Virtanen, & Ferrie, 2006). Two research areas that support this notion include literature on the biopsychosocial model and occupational …
Description And Alleviation Of The Stress Response In Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks (Rhizoprionodon Terraenovae), White-Spotted Bamboo Sharks (Chiloscyllium Plagiosum), And Golden Shiners (Notemigonus Crysoleucas), Lauren Nicole Fuller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sharks are an essential component of many marine ecosystems; however they have experienced population declines mainly attributed to overfishing and capture of sharks as bycatch. Despite sharks often being released when captured as bycatch the act of capture can result in a stress response which may cause severe physiological perturbations. Studies have investigated the physiological impacts of capture stress on elasmobranchs but most have primarily focused on the secondary stress response. I conducted a series of studies to further describe the primary stress response through quantification of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) while also investigating methods such as sedation and limiting air …
Teaching Kids To Say "Ew!": Parent-Child Disgust Transmission, Brooklee Lightsey Tynes
Teaching Kids To Say "Ew!": Parent-Child Disgust Transmission, Brooklee Lightsey Tynes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Disgust is one of the six basic emotions but research suggests it is far more complex. As individuals respond to stimuli in different manners this suggests the emotion and its development may be shaped through learning principles and cultural practices (Rozin Lowery & Ebert 1994). It is imperative to understand how children’s disgust responses are shaped though observation classical and operant conditioning demonstrated by their primary caregivers. The current study examined the transmission of the emotion of disgust from primary caregivers to their children. Participants were 17 children (55.6% female) and one of their parents in Mississippi and Nebraska. The …
Emotion Regulation As A Predictor Of Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms, Brittany Spence Sapp
Emotion Regulation As A Predictor Of Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms, Brittany Spence Sapp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research findings suggest that emotion regulation (ER) is a key component in the maintenance and development of psychopathology. However there is a paucity of research assessing ER and Obsessive-Compulsive (OC) symptoms particularly how ER relates to OC tendencies in children. Due to the pervasive nature of both ER difficulties and OC symptoms across major life domains (i.e. familial social academic) and the lasting impact of these problems into adulthood further research is needed to better understand this connection. The present study investigated this relation in a clinical sample of 472 youth (ages 10 – 17) who completed a packet of …
Improving Random Forests By Feature Dependence Analysis, Silu Zhang
Improving Random Forests By Feature Dependence Analysis, Silu Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Random forests (RFs) have been widely used for supervised learning tasks because of their high prediction accuracy good model interpretability and fast training process. However they are not able to learn from local structures as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) do when there exists high dependency among features. They also cannot utilize features that are jointly dependent on the label but marginally independent of it. In this dissertation we present two approaches to address these two problems respectively by dependence analysis. First a local feature sampling (LFS) approach is proposed to learn and use the locality information of features to group …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tinospora crispa Miers ex Hook.f. & Thomson and Tinospora sinensis (Lour.) Merr. (Menispermaceae) are two species that have morphological similarities which makes distinction between the two of critical importance because T. crispa has been reported to cause hepatotoxicity. Comparative morpho-anatomy of the leaves and stems of Tinospora species indigenous to south and southeast Asia was undertaken to elaborate their distinguishing pharmacognostic features. Chemical characterization of the secondary metabolites of the two species may aid in elucidating their chemical diversity and hence help to resolve safety and quality issues. Phytochemical investigation of the stems led to the isolation of nineteen compounds …

A Study To Regioselectively Access Fluorinated Triazoles And Isoxazoles, Sweta Adhikari
A Study To Regioselectively Access Fluorinated Triazoles And Isoxazoles, Sweta Adhikari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of the thesis is to develop regioselective methods for mono-fluorination of disubstituted triazoles, both 1,4- and 1,5-regioisomer, and isoxazoles. These strategies focus on one-pot direct access to final mono-fluorinated triazoles and isoxazoles. Eventually, these fluorinated substrates will be screened against various biological targets. Similarly, the optimization study of a regioselective method to generate 5-fluoro-1,4-disubstituted triazole was conducted. This reaction also utilized 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to synthesize fluorinated triazole. However, difluoroalkene was used as a synthetic equivalent of fluoroalkyne for this method. This resulted into the inversion of polarity affording a different regioisomer. Here, fluoronitroalkene was identified as a synthetic …
The Effects Of Hypoxia And Freshwater Intrusion On The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica), James Henry Gledhill
The Effects Of Hypoxia And Freshwater Intrusion On The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica), James Henry Gledhill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent estimates revealed a significant decrease in oyster populations worldwide. This drastic decrease has detrimental effects on coastal and estuarine ecosystems. Two environmental stressors that are thought to be contributing to the oyster population decline are hypoxia and excess freshwater intrusion. In this study, effects of hypoxia and low salinity on oysters were investigated using a combination of laboratory and field-based methods. In the laboratory, oysters were exposed to 2, 4, or 8 days of hypoxia (< 2 mg/L dissolved oxygen) folloby 6 days of recovery in normoxic conditions. At the same time, caged oysters were exposed to a naturally occurring hypoxic event in the field. After 8 days, laboratory-exposed oysters shoevidence of immunosuppression indicated by significant downregulation of the immune-related gene thymosin-β4 (Tβ-4) and a significant decrease in total circulating hemocytes compared to controls. However, in field oysters exposed to a naturally occurring hypoxic event, no effect on total hemocyte counts and an upregulation of Tβ-4 was observed. In a second field study, to investigate how oysters respond to prolonged freshwater exposure, caged oysters were placed on 23 April 2019 at six reef sites in the Mississippi Sound along with in situ water quality sensors. One-hundred percent mortality of caged oysters occurred at four of the six sites. Of the 6 six sites, Henderson Point Reef and Kittiwake Reef shosome caged oyster survival. At Henderson Point, where higher mortality was observed compared to Kittiwake, a significant increase in lipid peroxidation was detected. Analysis of mRNA expression of surviving caged and native oysters revealed downregulation of genes involved in immune function, low oxygen response, and osmoregulation. These results show possible evidence of energetic depression which inhibits adequate adaptation to low salinity conditions. Energetic depression and increased oxidative damage could have contributed to higher oyster mortality. Dredge sampling of native oysters at the all Mississippi Sound field sites on 27 September 2019, following recovery to ~15 ppt salinity, still indicated 100% native oyster mortality due to the prior prolonged freshwater exposure. Continued monitoring of western Mississippi Sound oyster reefs is crucial to observe recovery of oyster populations.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Artemisinin is currently used as an antimalaria drug. Studies have shown its monomeric form exhibited promising anticancer effects by inhibiting the proliferation, inducing apoptosis, and increasing oxidative stress of tumor cells. Recently, several dimeric forms of artemisinin have been synthesized with more potent anticancer activity. In this study, nine dihydroartemisinin dimers with diversely functionalized linkers exhibited similar cytotoxicity against human breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-231 in vitro. Among these nine DHA dimers, DHA dimer oxime was selected for further anticancer activity and pharmacokinetic study. Our preliminary study shothat DHA dimer oxime displayed more than a 10-fold increase of antiproliferation effect over its …
Behavioral Similarities And Differences Among Symptoms Of Emetophobia, Disordered Eating, And Disgust, Jennifer Arden Petell
Behavioral Similarities And Differences Among Symptoms Of Emetophobia, Disordered Eating, And Disgust, Jennifer Arden Petell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Emetophobia, also known as the specific phobia of vomiting (SPOV), is a clinical disorder with severe symptomatology and chronicity. However, there remains a significant lack of knowledge in overall conceptualization and etiological understanding. Recent literature has described this disorder within the context of abnormal eating disorders, despite the essential difference in symptom function between SPOV and disordered eating (Keyes & Veale, 2018; Volpe et al., 2015). Therefore, the present study sought to further the conceptualization and delineation of symptoms of emetophobia and disordered eating, as well as their potential relation with disgust. More specifically, it was hypothesized that symptoms of …
Civic Engagement Among Emerging Adults: Self-Efficacy, Purpose, And Program Experiences, Rachel Marsh
Civic Engagement Among Emerging Adults: Self-Efficacy, Purpose, And Program Experiences, Rachel Marsh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding how to cultivate civic mindedness and engagement in emerging adults is of central importance. Theories of positive youth development point to the importance of particular youth characteristics for promoting the development of successful and contributing citizens (Lerner, Almerigi, Theokas, & Lerner, 2005). Among these, self-efficacy, or one’s belief in their ability to perform a specific task, is considered essential (Bandura, 1977; DeWitz, 2004; Solhaug, 2006). Scholars have, more recently, pointed to the role of purpose as key for motivating civic engagement (Damon, Menon, & Cotton Bronk, 2003). Beyond youth characteristics, other scholars point to the importance of opportunities for …
Application And Refinement Of Molecular Ecology Techniques For Amphibian Conservation, Stephanie Marie Burgess
Application And Refinement Of Molecular Ecology Techniques For Amphibian Conservation, Stephanie Marie Burgess
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wildlife conservation has become increasingly difficult due to habitat loss habitat fragmentation and land use change. Thus conservationists have embraced advances in molecular ecology such as landscape genetics and microbial bioinformatics that employ genetic techniques to further understand the relationship between individuals and their environment. In landscape genetics model inferences can be used to identify features that facilitate or resist gene flow providing a framework for anticipating the impacts of land use changes on a species’ ability to disperse. However the factors that affect the transferability of landscape genetics inferences are poorly understood and little is known about the effect …
The Influence Of Site Connectivity On Zooplankton Assemblage Dynamics Within The Lower Mississippi River Floodplain, Jarrod Sackreiter
The Influence Of Site Connectivity On Zooplankton Assemblage Dynamics Within The Lower Mississippi River Floodplain, Jarrod Sackreiter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Zooplankton are important components of the food web of such lotic systems. Although capable of motility, they are weak swimmers and their distribution and community composition across a floodplain is strongly affected by patterns of water flow and hydrologic connectivity. However, there has been little research on the zooplankton dynamics of large rivers, such as the Lower Mississippi River (LMR). From morphological identification of zooplankton across the connectivity gradient, I assessed the degree to which hydrologic connectivity acts as an explanatory factor influencing spatial and temporal variation in zooplankton assemblage structure. Second, I compared the use of morphological identification to …
Collegiate Equity Mentoring Matrix: A Culturally Relevant Framework For The Meaningful Mentoring Of Black Male Students, Norris Allen Edney
Collegiate Equity Mentoring Matrix: A Culturally Relevant Framework For The Meaningful Mentoring Of Black Male Students, Norris Allen Edney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation reports on a qualitative analysis of the mentoring experiences of 22 successful Black males at the University of Mississippi. Several theories were used to frame the analysis. Bozeman and Feeney’s (2007) mentoring conceptualization helps to exact an operational definition for mentoring for the analysis. Theories describing the competition between the political interests which shape educational environments (Labaree, 1997) and student motivations to persist to graduation (Tinto, 2016) help to contextualize the barriers to success students encounter in college. Crisp and Cruz’s (2009) college mentoring theory helps to consider the potential for mentoring to support student success in college. …

Do Individual Responses To Resistance Exercise Exist To An Extent That Can Be Detected Beyond That Of Measurement Error/Random Biological Variability?, Scott J. Dankel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Millions of dollars are spent analyzing inter-individual differences in response to resistance exercise, but the lack of a non-exercise control group means they may simply be examining random error. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are inter-individual differences in response to two distinct resistance exercise protocols. Participants (n=151) were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups as follows: (1) a traditional exercise group performing 4 sets to failure with a load that could be lifted 8-12 times; (2) a one-repetition maximum (1RM) training group performing a 1RM test each visit; and (3) a non-exercise control group. …

Synthesis Of Fluoroflavones As Potential Neuroprotective Agents, Maali Alshammari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Flavones are polyphenol natural products that are known to have neuroprotective effects against many diseases caused by the formation of reactive species. Flavonoids are subgroup of flavones and they are believed to function as antioxidants. Specifically, they target free radicals and eliminate its harmful effect on the cell. Fluoroflavones were designed to improve the potency of the antioxidant activity and potentially be used as neuroprotective agents. A monofluorinated and trifluoromethylated flavone were synthesized by using commercially available fluorination reagents, N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide; and Togni’s or Umemoto's respectively. After the synthesis of the desired flavones and their monofluorinated and trifluoromethylated derivatives, biological testing …
