Nyku: A Social Robot For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dan Stephan Stoianovici Jan 2020

Nyku: A Social Robot For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dan Stephan Stoianovici

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The continued growth of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) around the world has spurred a growth in new therapeutic methods to increase the positive outcomes of an ASD diagnosis. It has been agreed that the early detection and intervention of ASD disorders leads to greatly increased positive outcomes for individuals living with the disorders. Among these new therapeutic methods, Robot-Assisted Therapy (RAT) has become a hot area of study. Recent works have shown that high functioning ASD children have an affinity for interacting with robots versus humans. It is proposed that this is due to a less complex set of communication …

Examining Artifacts Of The Watershed Segmentation, Emily Jo Armitage Jan 2020

Examining Artifacts Of The Watershed Segmentation, Emily Jo Armitage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The watershed segmentation is an algorithm used to systematically track cell intercalary behaviors during germ band extension of the Drosophila embryo. Neighboring cells share a contracting vertical interface, called a T1, which continues contracting to a single point, a T2, and extending in the horizontal direction to create what is called a T3 interface (Fig. 1). Additionally, higher order vertices called rosettes occur when five or more cells meet at a common vertex. Simulated T2 events demonstrate that cell angle and not noise level in the image contributes to the incorrect detection of artifactual T1s in more acute angled cells …

What Happens Next? A Grounded Theory Exploration Of The Psychological Impact Of Leaving The Gang, Alana C. Liskov Jan 2020

What Happens Next? A Grounded Theory Exploration Of The Psychological Impact Of Leaving The Gang, Alana C. Liskov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very little research exists regarding the psychological impacts of gang membership and the mental health needs of gang members. Of the few studies that have been conducted, gang members were found to have increased rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (1.77 odds), current substance abuse (2.58 odds), oppositional defiant disorder, (1.24 odds) and conduct disorder (4.05 odds) (Harris, Elkins, Butler, Shelton, Robles, Kwok, Simpson, Young, Mayhew, Brown, & Sargent, 2013). Violent ruminative thinking, violent victimization and fear of further victimization were also significantly higher in gang members and believed to account for high levels of psychosis and anxiety disorder in gang …

Quantification Of Mitochondrial Zinc Homeostasis And Analysis Of Zinc And Polyamine-Mediated Axonal Trafficking, Dylan Hunt Fudge Jan 2020

Quantification Of Mitochondrial Zinc Homeostasis And Analysis Of Zinc And Polyamine-Mediated Axonal Trafficking, Dylan Hunt Fudge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The zinc ion is an important emerging signaling molecule for biological processes. In this work we engineered improved zinc sensors based on our previously developed fluorescent sensor GZnP1 to provide sensors with a higher fluorescent readout, faster kinetics, and a superior sensitivity to zinc. We utilized these zinc sensors and further developed the sensors to answer questions pertaining to biological zinc. We showed the labile zinc concentration in the mitochondrial matrix was less than 1 pM while the labile zinc concentration in the cytosol and mitochondrial IMS were comparable (~100 pM) across four different cell lines. Using these zinc sensors …

Epochs Of Ecology: The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism, Jacob Alexander Tucker Jan 2020

Epochs Of Ecology: The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism, Jacob Alexander Tucker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transition from feudalism to capitalism has undoubtedly been one of the most fruitful and complicated debates amongst economic historians in the 20th and 21st centuries. With the advent of global ecological collapse, there is a necessity to examine and theorize the movement from feudalism to capitalism through the lens of ecology. While in mainstream economics the environment is either entirely dismissed or nature’s role in economics remains subsidiary to the human economy, in the field of Marxian economics, human’s interacting through nature is at the core of the entire theory. For that reason, this thesis takes earnestly Marx’s contributions …

Fluid Dynamics Characterization Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves, Mohammed Barakat Jan 2020

Fluid Dynamics Characterization Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves, Mohammed Barakat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aortic stenosis due to degenerative calcific aortic valvular disease is the most reason for aortic valve replacement in developed countries. Aortic stenosis affects up to 7% of the world population, and current clinical data indicate that the number of the affected people could be triple by 2050, due to population ageing and health lifestyle. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was introduced as a minimal invasive treatment of severe aortic stenosis. Even though surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is considered the golden standard treatment for severe aortic stenosis patients, TAVR showed equivalent or even superior outcome compare to SAVR. Currently, transcatheter …

Cellular And Developmental Insights Into The Early Evolution Of Muscle, Jeffrey J. Colgren Jan 2020

Cellular And Developmental Insights Into The Early Evolution Of Muscle, Jeffrey J. Colgren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Whereas a great deal has been learned about the molecular underpinnings of morphological evolution in animals, much less is known about the origin of novel cell and tissue types. During the time in which the earliest animal lineages were diversifying, fundamental cell and tissue types, such as muscles, arose. Sponges are one of two animal lineages that lack muscles, yet they undergo coordinated full body contractions. Whereas the signaling processes have been studied, the physical mechanisms of contraction are completely uncharacterized. The main purpose of this work is to understand the primary contractile tissue of the sponge Ephydatia muelleri, …

The participants in this study include those aged 0 – 16 from the National Survey of Child and adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW) dataset. The NSCAW study consists of five waves of data where Wave I …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Korean Adoptees’ Multiple Minority Identities, Jared Utley Jan 2020

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Korean Adoptees’ Multiple Minority Identities, Jared Utley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the end of the Korean War, Korean children have been placed for international adoption due to their marginalized status in South Korea. In the United States, Korean children have predominantly been adopted to White families through transracial adoption (Bergquist, 2003; Lee, 2003). Transracial adoption describes the process of children being placed in a home where there are racial differences with one or both adoptive parents. Through international transracial adoption, Korean adoptees may undergo events that impact the salience and development of multiple minority identities, including: racial, ethnic, cultural, and as an adoptee. These experiences may be shaped by interactions …

Dis/Ableist Consumption: A Critical Thematic Analysis Of Avowed And Ascribed Neuro-Identities In The Classroom, Shaundi C. Newbolt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, faculty and students are publicly claiming neurodivergent identities and support for the neurodiversity movement. This study uses Collier and Hecht’s cultural identity theories with Lang and Chen’s two-step process, critical thematic analysis (CTA), to examine avowals and ascriptions with four diagnostic terms, ASD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and dyslexia, of students and professors from Rate My Professors (RMP) with Ritter’s frame of RMP as a phenomenon.

A total of 1,022 posts are analyzed to understand how students resist or re-inscribe popular medical model/deficit discourse in the classroom: student avowals (N = 232), professor avowals (N = 51), …

Subalpine Forest Tree Seedling Response To Drought, Alex Goke Jan 2020

Subalpine Forest Tree Seedling Response To Drought, Alex Goke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of tree species’ ability to tolerate drought is necessary to anticipate future forest dynamics with climate change, especially at the seedling stage given their role in shaping forest structure. We used precipitation reduction shelters to mimic drought for subalpine conifer seedlings (A. lasiocarpa and P. engelmannii) in the Rocky Mountains and compared survivorship and morphological and physiological responses to assess relative degrees of drought tolerance. We detected no significant investment in morphological tolerance traits (e.g. root biomass, leaf:stem area ratio) but substantial reductions in net photosynthesis. While shading partially ameliorated drought effects when precipitation reduction was moderate, …

Ehbp1 And Ehd2 Regulate Dll4 Caveolin-Mediated Endocytosis During Blood Vessel Development, Amelia Margaret Webb Jan 2020

Ehbp1 And Ehd2 Regulate Dll4 Caveolin-Mediated Endocytosis During Blood Vessel Development, Amelia Margaret Webb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels from existing vessels, there must be tight regulation between a leading tip cell and trailing stalk cells during vascular patterning. Lateral inhibition produced by Notch signaling is central to the specification and maintenance of tip and stalk cells in growing angiogenic sprouts. The Notch pathway is activated by the ligand Delta at adherens junctions between tip and stalk cells. Despite the centrality of Delta/Notch signaling to angiogenesis, relatively little is known about the mechanism of this signaling event. It has been proposed that the force generated by the Notch bound Delta ligand …

@Gretathunberg: Navigating Critique And Identity Within Youth Climate Activism On Twitter, Carina Robin Weadock Jan 2020

@Gretathunberg: Navigating Critique And Identity Within Youth Climate Activism On Twitter, Carina Robin Weadock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Youth climate activist Greta Thunberg sat alone on the steps of the Swedish Parliament building in September of 2018, holding a bold black and white sign and demanding action be taken in the face of the climate crisis. Ever since, her activism and Twitter presence have sparked media attention, catalyzed youth activists globally to organize marches and strike from school, and have drawn critique. This thesis employs McKerrow’s (1989) critical rhetoric to uncover dominant discourses within tweets that undermine Thunberg based on identity and to explore the potential that Thunberg’s Twitter presence might or might not hold for future youth …

The Colored Pill: A History Film Performance Exposing Race Based Medicines, Wanda Lakota Jan 2020

The Colored Pill: A History Film Performance Exposing Race Based Medicines, Wanda Lakota

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of the 32 pharmaceuticals approved by the FDA in 2005, one medicine stood out. That medicine, BiDil®, was a heart failure medication that set a precedent for being the first approved race based drug for African Americans. Though BiDil®, was the first race specific medicine, racialized bodies have been used all throughout history to advance medical knowledge. The framework for race, history, and racialized drugs was so multi-tiered; it could not be conceptualized from a single perspective. For this reason, this study examines racialized medicine through performance, history, and discourse analysis.

The focus of this work aimed …

Black Minds Matter: A Phenomenological Inquiry Examining The Prevalence Of Racial Trauma Among Black Doctoral Students, Jazmyne Markeeva Peters Jan 2020

Black Minds Matter: A Phenomenological Inquiry Examining The Prevalence Of Racial Trauma Among Black Doctoral Students, Jazmyne Markeeva Peters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Systemic and institutionalized racism is endemic to life in the United States and contributes to the daily marginalization of Black people. While the negative psychological and physiological effects of racism have been well-documented, the notion that racism can be experienced as a trauma is a newer theory. Racial trauma has been understudied and underappreciated, though it is a theory that clinicians should incorporate when working with Black clients and other clients of color. Exploring the ways in which Black doctoral students attending a predominantly White institution (PWI) have experienced racism is an essential contribution to the existing racial trauma literature. …

Automated Change Detection In Privacy Policies, Andrick Adhikari Jan 2020

Automated Change Detection In Privacy Policies, Andrick Adhikari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Privacy policies notify Internet users about the privacy practices of websites, mobile apps, and other products and services. However, users rarely read them and struggle to understand their contents. Also, the entities that provide these policies are sometimes unmotivated to make them comprehensible. Due to the complicated nature of these documents, it gets even harder for users to understand and take note of any changes of interest or concern when these policies are changed or revised.

With recent development of machine learning and natural language processing, tools that can automatically annotate sentences of policies have been developed. These annotations can …

Characterization Of The Dimerization And Salt Dependent Aggregation Of The Als-Linked Protein Tdp-43, Elizabeth Ehrhardt Jan 2020

Characterization Of The Dimerization And Salt Dependent Aggregation Of The Als-Linked Protein Tdp-43, Elizabeth Ehrhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trans-active response (TAR) DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) is essential for RNA processing but can also form toxic cytoplasmic inclusions in neurons of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). RNA-binding has been shown to have the potential to decrease or inhibit the aggregation of TDP-43, indicating that supplying RNA therapeutics may be a solution to treat these neurodegenerative disorders. However, the mechanism of aggregation, transitioning from TDP-43’s native dimeric state to small oligomers to toxic aggregates, is still relatively unknown. This needs to be established before determining how to target and disrupt this aggregation. Using GFP-TDP-43, …

Caballerismo In Latinx Men In Higher Education, Victor Carrasco Jan 2020

Caballerismo In Latinx Men In Higher Education, Victor Carrasco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Latinx men continue to be marginalized in higher education, and more research is needed to understand how to retain them using anti-deficit frameworks (Cook et al., 2012). Studies have investigated caballerismo as a protective factor for LatinX men. Caballerismo is defined by egalitarian beliefs, affiliation, positive family relationships, and empathy (Arciniega et al., 2008; Neff, 2001). Despite its promise as an anti-deficit framework, little is known about how caballerismo informs Latino students’ experiences in higher education. Therefore, this study addresses the following research questions: a) How does caballerismo manifest in Latinx men in higher education, b) how does caballerismo intersect …

Development Towards An Ethylene Sensing Artificial Metalloenzyme, Mitchell Lee Ellinwood Jan 2020

Development Towards An Ethylene Sensing Artificial Metalloenzyme, Mitchell Lee Ellinwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ethylene (ethene) is the essential ripening hormone for climacteric plants, and consequently its detection and quantification is of considerable interest to the horticulture industry. Its detection however is a non-trivial pursuit, traditionally requiring expensive and inaccessible instrumentation that fail to provide in vivo information about ethylene. A ruthenium based fluorescent probe for the selective detection of ethylene has recently been developed, and it was envisioned that this probe could be made biocompatible by encasing it within a protein scaffold making it an artificial metalloenzyme. To this end biotinylated N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) were synthesized, which can be appended onto the ruthenium …

Real-Time Detection Of Demand Manipulation Attacks On A Power Grid, Srinidhi Madabhushi Jan 2020

Real-Time Detection Of Demand Manipulation Attacks On A Power Grid, Srinidhi Madabhushi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An increased usage in IoT devices across the globe has posed a threat to the power grid. When an attacker has access to multiple IoT devices within the same geographical location, they can possibly disrupt the power grid by regulating a botnet of high-wattage IoT devices. Based on the time and situation of the attack, an adversary needs access to a fixed number of IoT devices to synchronously switch on/off all of them, resulting in an imbalance between the supply and demand. When the frequency of the power generators drops below a threshold value, it can lead to the generators …

Human Genetics, Psychotropic Drugs, And Acts Of Violence, Selma Jolanda Eikelenboom-Schieveld Jan 2020

Human Genetics, Psychotropic Drugs, And Acts Of Violence, Selma Jolanda Eikelenboom-Schieveld

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From the start of the use of psychoactive prescription medications in the 1950s, physicians reported paradoxical adverse reactions, ranging from newly developing depressions to an increase in existing mood disorders, and extremely violent and bizarre acts of suicide and homicide. In this research, it is hypothesized that the pharmacological properties of the prescribed drugs or the interaction between the drugs and the enzymes that are primarily responsible for their metabolism (cytochrome P450s) could cause these reactions. Given that acts of violence could be medication-induced, the role of the rate of drug metabolism is discussed. Genetic testing of certain CYP450s could …

Land Use Influences Along Elevation Gradient On Macroinvertebrate Communities, Brittany Sprout Jan 2020

Land Use Influences Along Elevation Gradient On Macroinvertebrate Communities, Brittany Sprout

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Land use activities have caused disturbances that affect the quality of freshwater ecosystems worldwide. How the influences of land use along an environmental gradient and the associated environmental variables that may influence stream diversity and function is unclear. We address these issues by studying biodiversity, abundance, and functional diversity of macroinvertebrates across different land types along a gradient in Colorado, USA. We also address how diversity may change along an elevation gradient by analyzing previously published macroinvertebrate research. We found evidence that land use and disturbance are stronger explanations of changes in macroinvertebrate communities, rather than elevation. Functional trait patterns …

Windows Into The Unseen The Power Of Metaphor As Revealed By Paul Ricoeur And Moses Maimonides, Claire E. Molk Jan 2020

Windows Into The Unseen The Power Of Metaphor As Revealed By Paul Ricoeur And Moses Maimonides, Claire E. Molk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ambiguous language haunts countless fields of human inquiry. The solution to its confounding nature has repeatedly been to reduce language to its face-value, launching an endless search for the right meaning. This paper aims to examine two thinkers who reveal language to be a more complicated matter. Paul Ricoeur and Moses Maimonides demonstrate the importance of language’s complexity through close examinations of metaphor. While we find different understandings of metaphor, reflecting different metaphysics within each author’s study, both Ricoeur and Maimonides contribute to the notion that language’s complexity is not to be eliminated through literal readings, but engaged to open …

Rhetorical Genealogy And The Ethics Of Eugenics, David Mark Thomas Jan 2020

Rhetorical Genealogy And The Ethics Of Eugenics, David Mark Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation strives to critique contemporary rhetoric on eugenics. In recent years, scientists succeeded in mapping the human genome and subsequently developed new gene editing technologies. To situate current ethical discourses about eugenics, I trace histories of these discourses at several scales of society – from the macroscopic level of the body politic to the meso level where modes of assessment have been deployed purportedly to accurately evaluate human characteristics to the microscopic level of the gene. I employ Foucauldian genealogy to highlight how, despite marked differences over time in specific eugenic discourses and practices exist, the underlying rhetoric has …

An Economic Analysis Of Cyber Warfare Governance Models, Kevin M. Kelleher Jan 2020

An Economic Analysis Of Cyber Warfare Governance Models, Kevin M. Kelleher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Allusions to death delivered by bits and bytes have been in vogue since the Reagan administration. Yet, as the internet and its connected devices have since proliferated, cyber violence remains far more fiction than fact. Nevertheless, prominent U.S. officials have all but assured the eventuality of a devastating attack. In anticipation, political, legal, and industry experts are now seeking to codify and inculcate international norms to govern acts of war prosecuted via cyberspace. Two of the most prominent governance models to emerge are the Tallinn Manual and Microsoft’s Digital Geneva Convention. The driving thesis of this research argues that within …

Urban Green Space: Mitigator Or Multiplier Of Inequality In The Denver Metropolitan Area?, Joshua Charles Baldwin Jan 2020

Urban Green Space: Mitigator Or Multiplier Of Inequality In The Denver Metropolitan Area?, Joshua Charles Baldwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies have shown that communities of color and low-income populations are likely to live in neighborhoods that lack access to quality green spaces, unable to directly benefit from the environmental, recreational, and cultural services they provide. The goal of this research was to determine if the green space inequality patterns seen globally and nationally exist in the Denver Metropolitan Area. Using an existing green space dataset, ecosystem services fieldwork, GIS digitizing, and bivariate correlation analysis I uncovered numerous green space inequalities based on proximity, acreage, and quality. Key findings included 1) Lakewood’s Hispanic and less-educated populations have relatively little access …

Ayahuasca’S Religious Diaspora In The Wake Of The Doctrine Of Discovery, Roger K. Green Jan 2020

Ayahuasca’S Religious Diaspora In The Wake Of The Doctrine Of Discovery, Roger K. Green

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

‘Ayahuasca’ is a plant mixture with a variety of recipes and localized names native to South America. Often, the woody ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) is combined with chacruna leaf (Psychotria viridis) in a tea, inducing psychedelic effects among its users. While social usage varies among Indigenous Peoples of South America, during the twentieth century new religious movements in Brazil began employing the mixture as religious sacrament. Additionally, various centers for ayahuasca “healing” have emerged both inside and outside of the Amazon Rainforest, frequently with the aim of helping people addicted to other substances. As interest grew, …
