There have been a number of investigations dealing with the abortion of essential organs in the imperfect flowers. Ulvin submitted a paper on Abortive Stamens and Carpels in Lychnis alba, Simon described stamen and carpel abortion in Cucumis stativus, Schaffner was able to control sex expression in Arisamea triphyllum and secure sex reversal in Cannabis stiva, Bessey determined the relationship of sex to the age of pollen in Cannabis sativa.

B. subtilis is one of the oldest known bacterial organisms, having been described by Ehrenberg as early as 1838. It was later more accurately described and placed in its present classification by Gohn in 1872. This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1933, surveys the chemical classification of proteins and their role in human nutrition, with the stated aim of preparing home economics students to understand protein's function in the diet. Jones organizes proteins into three major classes: simple proteins, including albumins, globulins, glutelins, protamins, and histones; conjugated proteins, including nucleo-proteins, glyco-proteins, phospho-proteins, and hemoglobins; and derived proteins, including albumoses, peptones, and peptids, describing the chemical composition, solubility properties, and sources of each.

This thesis, presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science, provides a systematic chemical study of the alkaloids, a class of complex nitrogenous plant substances possessing basic properties. Barre opens by defining the alkaloids and surveying the various systems used to classify them, whether by natural versus artificial origin, chemical nucleus (pyridine, quinoline, or isoquinoline), volatility, or botanical family of origin, and outlines their general physical and chemical properties, including solubility, optical activity, and characteristic reactions with precipitating and color-test reagents.

The resistance of wheat to the stem-rust organism (Puccinia graminis tritei) has been under investigation for a number of years. Although rust resistance has been investigated from various angles, there still remains a question as to the nature of resistance, the time when resistance first appears in plants and whether or not it is of a stable character.
