Rising costs have changes man’s ideals and eating habits. Plant ingredients, because of their relatively low costs, have been increasingly used as a substitute for animal proteins. If these plant ingredients could be directly utilized by man, this would be a more efficient use of energy and nutrients. One plant source currently used in such a manner is soybeans, which is a prime source of protein for human and livestock nutrition. However, soybeans contain several factors that are detrimental to man and livestock. Heating of soybeans counteracts these factors, since the undesirable factors are heat labile. The Effect Of Pulp Mill Effluents On The Carbon Dioxide Evolution Of Three East Texas Soils, John C. Morris

Two pulp mill effluents, NaOH extraction water from the pulp bleaching process and water from the chlorination step of the pulp bleaching process, were applied to jars containing three East Texas soils. Carbon dioxide evolution was then measured with an infrared gas analyzer to determine the effect of the effluents on the respiration of soil microorganisms. The relationship between effluent treatments was not statistically significant, though detrimental effects were observed in the heavier soil. Irrigation of clays and clay loams with the effluent is not recommended. Irrigation of sandy soils should be possible if there is no danger of sub-surface …

On February 11, 1971, the Regents of Higher Education for the State of South Dakota determined to follow a course-of action that would eliminate the College of Engineering at South Dakota State University in favor of maintaining only one such college at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. This course of action was implied through the adoption of certain recommendations contained in the Master Plan submitted to the Board of Regents by the Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Richard Gibb.

Information was gathered on mobility, behavior, and related activities of pheasants from July 1966 to July 1968 by banding and/or marking 160 birds with backtags and radio transmitters. Food was readily available since the winters were mild with little snow. Birds moved less than 1/4 mile from roosting areas to cornfields and weed patches to feed. Numbers of birds dispersing from the study area in spring varied each of the years, but 60 to 70 remained there during the two reproductive seasons. Adult cocks traveled less than 1/4 mile when dispersing-and adult hens moved less than 1/2 mile. Movements by …

Effects Of Chick Stimuli And Dieldrin On Adoptive Behavior Of Penned Hen Pheasants, K. L. Cool

Studies to determine the effect of chick stimuli and dieldrin on adoptive behavior of penned hen pheasants were conducted in 1969 and 1970. Results indicated that whether caged hens saw or heard chicks had no effect on adoption or killing of chicks. Hens receiving sound stimuli and sight-and-sound stimuli from chicks responded similarly to hens receiving no stimuli. Sub-lethal doses of dieldrin also had no effect on chick adoption under the conditions of this study. Results demonstrated that non-incubating pheasant hens will adopt and brood orphan chicks. Phytoplankton populations in Enemy Swim Lake were observed to be quite different. Although these lakes lie within the same geographic area (Coteau des Prairies), major differences in water quality were recorded. The differences in water quality were reflected in the phytoplankton populations and appeared to be influenced by the agricultural practices on the watersheds. Enemy Swim Lake was basically a diatom lake while Lake Herman contained mostly blue-green algae. Genera of algae found in Enemy Swim Lake were: Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Lyngbya, Pediastrum, Staurastrum, Dinobyron, Asterionella, Fragilaria, Melosira, Stephanodiscus, and Ceratium. Population Dynamics Of The Mourning Dove In South Dakota, Leslie A. Rice

Mourning dove bandings in South Dakota totaled 44,842 from 1917 through 1970. Adult bandings totaled 44.4 percent of all bandings while immatures, juveniles, locals, and unknown age were 41.3, 0.8, 12.8, and 0.7 percent, respectively. Recoveries totaled 2.8 percent of the banded population, 2.5 percent from hunting and 0.5 percent from non-hunting. Annual mortality estimates of local (nestling) bandings from 1956-61 were between 54.4 and 64.5 percent. Subsequent adult mortality from local bandings was between 51.0 and 52.4 percent. Mean annuals mortality estimates of flying doves banded from 1964-69 were calculated using composite dynamic, composite time-specific, relative recovery rate, a …

Concentrations and loads of nutrients transported through the Lake Poinsett system were monitored from April 1, 1970 to April 1, 1971. An annual 2.07x 10~ m3 surface discharge into Lake Poinsett transported 1.66 x 104 kg (PO4) phosphorus, 1.28 x 104 kg nitrate nitrogen, and 3.90 x 104 kg organic carbon. The Big Sioux River-Dry Lake system contributed 63% of the phosphorus, 45% of the nitrate nitrogen, and 43% of the organic carbon load. The remaining portion entered Lake Poinsett from the Lake Albert drainage. Of the annual load of nutrients transported into Lake Poinsett, 33% of the nitrate nitrogen …

Toxins were produced from 6 strains of Cl. Botulinum, 2 of which killed pheasants. Inoculated birds were observed and a description of the progression of signs of the disease is given. Juvenile pheasants were inoculated with Types A and C toxin intramuscularly and were given the toxin orally. These birds were observed and their clinical signs noted. Adult pheasants were inoculated with toxoid prepared from type C toxin and commercial toxoid; injections were repeated in 21 days. Fourteen days following the final injection, the birds were challenged with toxin. Those protected with toxoid survived, while those receiving saline succumbed. Gross …

Benthos samples were collected in Lake Poinsett, a highly eutrophic eastern South Dakota lake, from March 1970 through February 1971. The lake bottom was divided into three substrate types (sand, sand-sapropel mixture and sapropel) and the percent of each substrate type was calculated. Nineteen macroscopic genera were taken from ten sampling stations located throughout the lake. Descriptions are presented for organisms in this group. Diversity of organisms was greatest in the sand substrates, in that all 19 genera were collected. Chironomus spp. (Chironomus plomosus, Chironomus attenuates and six unidentified species) was the most abundant group of organisms and occurred most …

Certain rations fed to lactating dairy cows appear to have a dramatic influence on the lipid composition of milk fat produced. A high grain ration fed with a limited amount of roughage tends to cause a depression in milk fat production while at the same time changing the milk fat composition. There have been various attempts to alleviate the depression in milk fat. Minerals used in the ration seem to slightly relieve the milk fat depression caused by high grain rations. The extent of arthropod-borne virus activity in humans and domestic and wild vertebrates in South Dakota is not known. The World Health Organization (88) defines an arbovirus as follows: "an arbovirus must produce a viremic in one or more vertebrate species, multiply in some arthropod that feeds on viremic blood and be transmitted through feeding." Mosquitoes or other arthropods fill these requirements because female mosquitoes take blood as a requisite to egg maturation. Blood from any vertebrate host contains the essential nutrients for ovarian maturation (65). Not all mosquitoes prefer blood from the same host so a wide variety of …

Biological nitrogen fixation, the mechanism of the enzymatic conversion of the inert nitrogen gas into amino acids in the cytoplasm of the microorganism has puzzled many scientists for decades. The recent discovery of some free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria has encouraged the investigation of this mechanism. A big step taken in the rapid elucidation of this mechanism was the first reproducible cell-free nitrogen-fixing system from Clostridium pasteurianum successfully obtained by Carnahan et al. (9) in 1960. Sodium D-thyroxine was evaluated for possible embryotoxic and/or teratogenic effects following oral administration in New Zealand White rabbits. All animals utilized were alert, active and apparently disease-free virgin does weighing three and one-half to four kilograms. Rabbits were individually housed in stainless steel batteries and maintained on a commercially available palletized diet and mineral supplement. Feed and water were provided ad libitum in animal quarters air conditioned to minimize environmental temperature fluctuations. The frequency and succession patterns of coleopterous species in cattle dung were determined for two localities in eastcentral South Dakota during 1969 and 1970. Thirty-nine species of beetles were screened as potential predators of the face fly, Musca autumnalis De Geer, a pest of cattle and horses; and 1 Coleoptera, 1 Hymenoptera and 1 nematode were screened as parasites of the same host. Succession studies of insects inhabiting bovine manure revealed that four families of Coleoptera were recovered from the manure and, in descending order of abundance, were Hydrophilidae, Staphylinidae, Scarabaeidae, and Histeridae. Various levels of selenium and arsenic additions were made to several types of chicken diets to study their effects on growth and reproduction criteria. Three experiments were conducted. The first study involved day-old chicks and terminated at 64 weeks of age. These yearling hens were then used for the second experiments which terminated when the hens were 104 weeks old. The third study was initiated with 20 week old pullets and terminated when they were 52 weeks old. Feeding purified diets resulted in slower chick growth and lower mature body weights of hens. Selenium additions of 2.0 ppm resulted in …
