Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin Jun 1956

Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Times Square went mad with noise and excitement, and a small freighter slipped from its Brooklyn berth into the drama of the night. It was December 31, 1949--midnight-January 1, 1950; and I was on my way to the world in general and Israel and the Near East in particular. To say the words Near East, to hear them spoken, to read the combination of Latin letters, even to think them fleetingly can conjure up for me a haze of incense-tinged dreams in which I see exotic sights, breathe pungent odours, and hear mysterious sounds. The Near East is all this …

A Study Of Selected Characteristics And The Extent Of Church Activity Of The Membership And Officials In The Free Methodist Church, Upper Midwest Region, Bruce Leffingwell Kline

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of the many established and recorded religious groups in the United States over two hundred are classified as Protestant. The sociology of religion, however, has dealt mainly with the larger, more liberal denominations, leaving the many, smaller religious associations relatively unexplored. Nevertheless little information exists which is focused directly on the membership characteristics of a given denomination throughout a specific region. This is particularly true of the smaller Protestant religious associations, any of which are more fundamentalistic in their orientation than the larger denominations. Since most previous research deals with the larger, more liberal churches, the question arises, what type …

Time And Tide : A Study Of The Conflicting Concepts Of Time Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, R. Clyde Mccone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Indian peoples of the Americas, as well as non-literate peoples around the world, have been swept or are being swept from their cultural moorings by their contacts with ‘white’ civilization. These cultures, whose values center around permanence and patience, have been engulfed in an expanding social order which exalts change. Impelled by its time oriented concepts of progress, opportunity, profit, speed, and efficiency, civilization’s contacts with familizational cultures have been uprooting, breaking, and crushing. The problem of this study shall be to define the Dakota concept of time, to distinguish it from that of Western civilization, and to discover …

Attitudes And Opinions Relating To The 4-H Junior Leadership Program In South Dakota, John F. Younger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

More than two and one-half million rural urban boys and girls in this nation are now members of one of the largest rural youth organizations; namely, the 4-H Club. Adult leadership available has not been adequate to service this group; consequently, it has become necessary to call upon the junior members of local organized 4-H Clubs to assume duties and responsibilities in assisting with this leadership work. Over 1,500 of the 15,000 or more 4-H members in South Dakota are currently enrolled as Junior Leaders.

Status Of The Curriculum And The Practices And Regulations Affecting It In The Four-Teacher High Schools Of South Dakota, George Webbenhurst Jan 1955

Status Of The Curriculum And The Practices And Regulations Affecting It In The Four-Teacher High Schools Of South Dakota, George Webbenhurst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the United States public education has been generally designated as a local responsibility rather than a state or federal function. The local community is also expected to contribute the greater share of the financial cost of operating the school. The school, being controlled locally, is designed to best meet the demands of the community it serves. This results in a certain amount of variance in the curriculums of the school of this country. A certain amount of similarity in the curriculums is due to the regulations imposed by state regulations and also, in cases of federal financial support, by …

History Of The Kidder Consolidated School Covering The Fourteen-Year Period From 1941 Through 1954, Francis W. Richter

In recent years there has been a great deal of speculation concerning the role of the small high school in the educational picture in South Dakota. The investigator has not intended to make a comparison between the small high school and the large high school but rather has undertaken to survey the Kidder Independent Consolidated school and note its progress toward fulfilling the needs of the community and keeping abreast of the times from 1941 through 1954.

A Survey Of The Occupational Status Of Post World War Ii Agriculture Education Graduates Of South Dakota State College, Harry Franz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today facts are demanded by everyone and for every purpose. To some extent, every activity of our life is governed by the results of a study of books and periodicals. This is true of a farmer cultivating his land, feeding his livestock, or purchasing his machinery. It is also true of persons in other vocations; the minister, the banker, the public official, the educator, the business man, and many others. When the vocational agriculture teacher has a problem he consults a “Handbook on Teaching Vocational Agriculture” which is a collection of organized facts based on experience. The efficiency in teaching …

A Study Of The Administrative Problems Related To The Scheduling Of Regular Classes And Extracurricular Activities In Ninety-Two High Schools In Eastern South Dakota, G. Wesley Peppers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Each school in South Dakota and for that matter each school in the United States has its particular problems in the administration, organization, operation, and supervision of each school. Many of the problems are similar or related while others pertain only to local situations. Large schools may have entirely different problems from very small schools yet some of their problems may be the same. Schools may have similar problems depending upon such things as size, geographical location, prosperity of the community, industry of the community, nationwide economic conditions, and races or nationalities in the community. The administration, supervision, organization, and …

Estimating Commercial Expansion From Irrigation Development In The Oahe Unit, John E. Thompson Jan 1953

Estimating Commercial Expansion From Irrigation Development In The Oahe Unit, John E. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Commercial activity in an economy that is predominantly agricultual is very sensitive to changes in farming conditions. It is generally agreed by businessmen in agricultural areas that the success of their business operation is largely dependent upon the number and prosperity of farmers in their trade areas. For this reason businessmen often encourage proposals to increase the number of forms in their trade areas and support measures designed to improve the economic position of farmers. In South Dakota, where rainfall is considered a limiting factor in agricultural production, considerable interest has been taken in irrigation as a means for increasing …

A Study Of The Practices And Procedures Prevailing In The Legion Government Day's Programs In Five South Dakota Schools During 1953, Philip R. Haskett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The project was adopted by the national American Legion in 1951; however, similar programs were in existence in a number of schools prior to that time. The approach to the problem has been unique in South Dakota. · Because it is sponsored by a state-wide organization, the American Legion, projects are round in the smaller as well as in the larger schools. The purpose of this study, then, is to determine the practices and procedures used in Legion Government Days' programs in five schools in this area of South Dakota. The programs which are the subject of this investigation originated …

Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem stated as a broad social question is : Has the Farm Ownership loan program been achieving its objectives of reducing farm tenancy and promoting security of tenure through family farm ownership? Available evidence indicates that the program may not have been very effective in reducing farm tenancy either nationally or in a high-tenancy area such as South Dakota where 53 percent of the farmers were tenants in 1940 . From its inception in 1937 through June 30, 1950, the Farm Ownership loan program made 58, 395 direct and insured loans in the United States. This figure compared with …

What happens to our high-school graduates educationally, and how well are the needs of the 1948-49 high-school graduates being met should be of special interest to college administrators, teachers and public school personnel, and of general interest to the public. This study provides certain fundamental information upon which judgments can be based but does not profess to give the solution or answer to how certain problems are being met. That which constitutes an adequate program of higher education varies according to different viewpoints and philosophies. If one takes the position that all students with better than average scholastic aptitude should …
