The Relationship Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of Residents Of Homes For Aged In Eastern South Dakota, Darlien G. Klug
The Relationship Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of Residents Of Homes For Aged In Eastern South Dakota, Darlien G. Klug
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To say that the problems of aging are universal, touching all of all culture at one time or another, appears to be something of a truism. Yet, short of birth and death, scarcely any part of the pattern of living affects all mankind to so great degree. With added years come decrease in physical vigor, declining health, and increased imminence of death- all conditions to which the aging must adjust. In American society these problems are particularly acute, largely because of the predominantly urban and industrial character of our culture. In South Dakota, particularly, growing numbers of elder citizens give …

A Study Of Selected Factors Related To Level Of Living On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Joseph F. Powers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The eager spread of Western society with its insatiable desire for new lands and raw materials has brought with it an exposure to cultures often diametrically opposed to western concepts and attitudes. As contact with alien cultures was made, resistance to plans for “progress” was often experienced and the “primitive” peoples were judged to be irrational savages. The westward advance of our fore-father is written across the pages of history in the bold of the American Indians. “When our ancestors landed on this continent they first fell upon their knees and then upon the aborigines.” Needless to say, the Indian …

The adolescent period is recognized as a crucial one in the development of individuals. This study is centered on the nutritional status of girls who are in this stage of development. Cooperative regional studies by experiment stations and school lunch studies in several states have covered many phases of nutritional status for various population groups in recent years. Investigators agrees that there is need for further information in regard to the dietary practices and nutritional status of adolescents, and there appears to be the greatest concern with respect to adolescent girls. The average annual birth rate for Indians in the …

A Status Survey Of The Requirements Of Thirteen Teacher Training Institutions Offering Baccalaureate Degrees In Elementary Education, Kenneth Ellwood Fritz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The demand for more and better qualified teachers has risen sharply in the past decade. The increasing population of the United States has been one factor contributing heavily to this demand. Another factor having considerable influence in recent years is the “Sputnik scare” brought forth by the launching of the Russian satellite on October 4, 1957. Particularly since that time, the American public has been more education conscious than in the past. The demand for a better quality in teaching has been more noticeable than in the past. It has been in the field of mathematics and science that the …

The Relationships Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of A South Dakota Rural-Nonfarm Community's Older Population, Denton E. Morrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Declining health, loss of physical vigor and the increased probability of death are conditions to which the aged of all societies must adjust. In addition, many older citizens in American society must face unique problems including the termination of gainful employment; reduced income; isolation through death or removal of family, friends, peers; increased periods of indolence; and a decreasing standard of living. Moreover, later life with its attendant complex of problems now faces more people in this country than ever before. The problems of older citizens in American society have therefore become the focus of considerable public attention in recent …

Estimating Commercial Expansion In Brookings Resulting From The Anticipated Increases In South Dakota State College Enrollments, Norma Ruth Koch

The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the conclusions of anthropologists is that of cultural variability and the relativity of value systems. This means that the designs for living with its system of moral values which one society has evolved may differ considerably from those of another. Each society has their unique value system (moral code). The Dakota Indians have (or had) theirs and the people of Western civilization have theirs. As a result of the culture contact of these two groups over the past seventy-five years, the Dakota Indian has been exposed to, even coerced to follow, a value system different than his own. …
