A Follow-Up Study Of Adult Home-Economics-Related Occupational Courses Conducted In South Dakota, 1968-1969, Sandra Jenter Hanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to investigate the adult home economics related occupational courses conducted in South Dakota during the 1968-1969 school term. At the time this study was initiated, there were no specific criteria for adult occupational classes in vocational education for South Dakota. Classes were offered for persons who had already entered the labor market and who needed training or retraining to achieve stability or advancement in employment. Class enrollment, length of time for the course, and/or charge per hour depended on the objectives of the class and the type of class offered. Classes could have been …

Comparison Of South Dakota State University Graduates Of The Home Economics And Of Other Curricula With Respect To Family Living Variables, Janice Hofer Grimm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Marriage and the family as we have known them in the past are currently undergoing greater change at a more accelerated rate than ever before in history. Many writers concerned with the family and social problems would lead us to wonder if marriage is disappearing. There is an increase in communal living, exchange of marriage partners, and "open" campus dormitories. The divorce rate has been climbing steadily for a number of years. But when one looks more deeply into communal life for example, it is discovered that the duration of communal living is generally about two years. A study done …

Utilization Of Encounter Groups In A Residence Hall, Robert Melville Keith, Jr. Mar 1972

Utilization Of Encounter Groups In A Residence Hall, Robert Melville Keith, Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research is focused on how to make residence hall living a more valid and relevant learning experience for the students. The physical arrangement of living areas in most traditional American residence halls is constructed with separate general living areas, i.e. wings. Since the residents of the wing are usually physically separated from the other wings, the individual wing becomes a relatively independent environment having living/interacting peculiarities all its own. The author of this research assumed that the individual wing is the most immediate dormitory influence on a resident. By concentrating a directed growth producing experience at the wing level, …

Manpower Training Programs In South Dakota : Socio-Economic Attributes Of Participants Associated With Training Outcomes, James W. Delong Mar 1972

Manpower Training Programs In South Dakota : Socio-Economic Attributes Of Participants Associated With Training Outcomes, James W. Delong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because of the unemployment, underemployment, poverty and occupational opportunity problems experienced in South Dakota, it is appropriate that manpower programs currently operating in the State be studied. To maximize the potential benefits of these programs it is necessary to understand their structure, their purpose, their goals and their effects. Likewise, the extent of participation in the programs should be determined along with finding out what type of trainee is benefitting the least or the most from the training experience. There has been considerable research into a wide spectrum of manpower programs and manpower needs in urban areas; however, relatively little …

Urban Insurrections: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach Toward An Integrated Typology, James Russell Stewart Jan 1972

Urban Insurrections: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach Toward An Integrated Typology, James Russell Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility and appropriateness of employing a multi-disciplinary approach in the study of urban insurrections in an effort to construct a typology which would include all of the elements common to each disorder. The multi-disciplinary method is necessitated by the biases which are inherent in any analysis that is restricted to either a psychological, sociological, or politico-historical treatment of episodes of collective behavior. All of the disciplines make major contributions to any analysis, but it is the contention of this writer that the disciplines must be integrated before the most accurate depiction …

Speech Training And Speech Activities In Institutions Of Higher Education In Taiwan, Chang Yuh-Sheng Jan 1971

Speech Training And Speech Activities In Institutions Of Higher Education In Taiwan, Chang Yuh-Sheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An M.A. thesis in speech on the status of speech training in Taiwan, China, is proposed. From personal experience, this author has discovered some difficulties which Chinese students meet when they take up speech in American universities. The chief reason for this might be that the Chinese students who study speech in American universities and colleges have a somewhat limited knowledge of the speech areas and an. inadequate background of speech training. Since speech courses are elective in most of the universities in Taiwan, the students' interest in participating in speech activities, such as speech contest and ·dramatic performance, has …

Adjustment Of Rural And Urban Residents In Five Retirement Homes In Northeastern Wisconsin, Grace E. Kiefert Jan 1971

Adjustment Of Rural And Urban Residents In Five Retirement Homes In Northeastern Wisconsin, Grace E. Kiefert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need for this study is indicated by gaps in gerontological research and information. Until the last twenty years, studies were not often made of the many aspects of the aged in society; and currently, many questions in this field remain unanswered. Some studies have dealt with the physical setting of the retirement homes, but the individual's perception of the home has not been studied. The actual physical conditions of the homes are inconsequential to this study because the residents' perception of the situation· is critical to adjustment. This will provide the focus for this study. The objectives of this study …

A Comparison Of An Individualized English Program With A Traditional English Program In Desmet High School, Beverly Jean Wolkow Jan 1971

A Comparison Of An Individualized English Program With A Traditional English Program In Desmet High School, Beverly Jean Wolkow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the incredible amount of information being uncovered each day and with the emphasis swinging from subject-centered curriculum to child-centered curriculum, education is in turmoil. Educators realize students cannot learn all the facts needed for the future. Since many people will have to retrain for new jobs several times in their lifetimes, students today probably cannot even learn enough for continuous occupation. To meet these challenges, educators have been searching for new methods of organization and instruction. One such method is individualized instruction. The purpose of initiating and studying a program of individualized instruction in English was to establish the …

Selected Determinants Of The Hiring Policy Of Employers Relative To Businesses In Five Counties Of South Dakota, Don Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Description of the Problem For nearly everyone in our society, remunerative work has provided a meaningful role. It also provided an avenue for the attainment of respect, dignity, and the essentials of the "good life." On the other hand, unemployment has necessitated reliance on programs for the indigent and unemployed. The central focus of this study was the Janus-headed problem of unemployment and underemployment. The approach was oriented to a level of organization which has not previously been adequately explored. Unlike most of the studies which have attempted to meliorate the exigencies of unemployment, this study focused on the needs …

A Conceptual Analysis Of Alienation In Current Theory And Research, Lanny Aron Neider Jan 1971

A Conceptual Analysis Of Alienation In Current Theory And Research, Lanny Aron Neider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the assumed relationship between theory and research with respect to alienation. The basic hypothesis of this study is that empirical research on alienation would be influenced by existing theoretical formulations on the topic. It is argued that Melvin Seaman's 1959 conceptualization of alienation would constitute the major theoretical influence inasmuch as it alone provided a systematic set of researchable meanings. To test this basic hypothesis, four sub-hypotheses were developed: (1) Based upon Seeman's five dimensional scheme one should expect a fairly equal emphasis on the examination of all dimensions of alienation in …
