A Study Of Teacher Effectiveness As Evidenced By Supervisor Ratings And Placement Of Teachers And Its Relationship To College Academic Success, Miles Curtis Olson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Various criteria have been used by individuals in the hiring of teachers as supposed indicators of future success in the classroom. Some research has been done in the field of predicting who the good teacher will be, but the employer still have little more than the subjective judgement of others, his own observation in an interview, and the college record of the applicant to guide him in selection. This study will deal primarily with one facet of the three means of selection, that is, the college academic record. This study will attempt to show the relationship, or lack of, between …

A Study Of High School Journalism Surveyed In Works Of Authors In Communication Studies And A Plan For Operating A Newspaper And Journalism Course In The Public High School At Flandreau, South Dakota, Jean E. Macksam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study looks at the subject of high school journalism. A course that will not overburden student or teacher can be set up in the high school and still leave time to supervise an edition of the paper each week. From 1900 to 1930, the function of a high school publication was mainly the practice of writing, a part of the English course. Its values were considered to be in the form of increased ability with which a student might perform this art of writing after practicing on the newspaper. One opinion was that the value of learning to write …
An Analysis Of Pari-Mutuel Racing's Contributions To The South Dakota Tourist Industry And To Public Finance In The State, Gene Lohrke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The pari-mutuel racing industry in South Dakota adds employment, income, and tax revenue to the state’s general economy. The tax is paid largely by non-residents, and the tax revenue depends almost entirely on the amount of wagering. The pari-mutuel tax thus agrees with Adam Smith’s third canon of taxation which deals with convenience of payment. The first objective of this study is to show the number of dollars added to the South Dakota economy from wagering and non-wagering expenditures of non-residents in connection with their trips to South Dakota pari-mutuel race tracks, and to compare these expenditures with other types …

The Relationship Of Selected Characteristics Of Farm Operators To Attitudes Toward Retirement, Wayne L. Larson
The Relationship Of Selected Characteristics Of Farm Operators To Attitudes Toward Retirement, Wayne L. Larson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A recent development in the social and economic history of the United States is the evolvement of an institutionalized stage of retirement in the life cycle of the average worker. In the early part of the twentieth century, retirement was not considered a major problem in our society. However, the number and proportion of people surviving to “post-retirement” age has been increasing steadily in both the rural and urban population. This is due, primarily, to declining mortality. Declining fertility, prior to World War II, has also had some effect on the increase in the proportion of people over 65 years …
Dairy Product Demand Projections To 1975: Their Impact On South Dakota's Dairy Industry, Norman R. Kallemeyn
Dairy Product Demand Projections To 1975: Their Impact On South Dakota's Dairy Industry, Norman R. Kallemeyn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The economic history of the United States is replete with examples of adjustment and readjustment by firms and industries. Such adjustments are usually made necessary by changes in the economic environment, and failure to adjust rather quickly and completely to such changes can mean economic disaster for entrepreneurs within an industry, and can result in insufficiencies in the total economic system. To offset the effects of change, it is often advantageous to attempt to foresee change in the economic environment, to estimate the future impact of change on relevant sectors of the production and marketing system, and to recommend adjustments …
Leisure Time Interests And Recreational Patterns Of Delinquent Boys And Girls Prior To Their Entry Into The South Dakota Training School, Louis Job Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study dealt with recreation and its association with juvenile delinquency. It is well known that the function of recreation is not to curb juvenile delinquency, but its effects of prevention cannot be overlooked. Recreation may well be a modern tool for rehabilitation aspects as well as a preventive measure for juvenile delinquency. The author felt that one of the greatest faults of recreation, which could very well show the lack of maturity of the profession, is the neglected segment of our society to whom the role could be most vital. The youngsters most likely to become delinquent are those …

A Comparison Of Motor Abilities Of Normal And Mentally Retarded Children, Dwayne G. Head

Proper education for the mentally retarded child presents a problem. The purpose of this study was to determine the quantity of organic acids present in silage. To be sure that the methods of analysis were correct, two different procedures were used: column and gas-liquid chromatographic analysis. To determine the actual quantities of the organic acids, 36 samples from various containers were used. The containers used were concrete silos, 55 gallon barrels, and also some samples were analyzed which were ensile din pint, quart, and one-half gallon jars. It was found that there is no real definite amount of organic acid produced in different silage fermentations.

A Comparison Of Some Limnological Changes Caused By The Brookings Sewage Treatment Plant On Six-Mile Creek And The Big Sioux River, Richard Ruelle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: In the days of the early pioneers in South Dakota and other sparsely settled areas, there was no problem in finding a sufficient supply of water for drinking, cooking, and washing purposes. The problems of waste disposal were taken care of by the microorganisms in the soil, the microorganisms easily being able to keep pace with the few settlers. As cities and towns began to form, usually along a stream where there was an abundant supply of fresh water, sewage disposal became a growing problem. The easiest way to get rid of the sewage was to dump it into …
