A Critical Study Of The Morality Of Carnal Warfare As Related To The Nuclear Age, Allen C. Isbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was undertaken for the purpose of clarifying the Christian's obligations regarding the military functions of his government. This study involved an investigation of several attitudes toward carnal warfare as expressed within the Christian tradition. It began with an analysis of the ever-present polemic regarding pacifism and developed into a discussion of the moral implications involved in various defense strategies. Attention was also directed to the need of solving the arms race which precariously threatens the world with unprecedented destruction.

Somatic Chromosome Reduction In Sorghum After Colchicine Treatment, Gerald Milo Simantel Mar 1963

Somatic Chromosome Reduction In Sorghum After Colchicine Treatment, Gerald Milo Simantel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diploid mutant plants that breed true in subsequent generations arise following colchicine treatment of sorghum seedlings of the variety Experimental 3. The production of diploid mutants was found to be dependent upon the genotype as well as the presence of certain environmental conditions after colchicine treatment. To explain the homozygosity of the mutants, it has been proposed that a reduction of chromosomes to a haploid condition occurred followed by doubling to restore the diploid number. To test this hypothesis, seedlings heterozygous for chromosome markets (one and two reciprocal translocations) were treated. After treatment of 320 seedlings heterozygous four one reciprocal …

A Comparison Of The Libraries Of Selected Small And Large Schools In South Dakota, La Verne Williams Feb 1963

A Comparison Of The Libraries Of Selected Small And Large Schools In South Dakota, La Verne Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of the high school library in our nation’s schools can be divided into three definite steps. The early schools in the United States had no libraries. This phase was followed by an era in which schools purchased some books for students to read, but chiefly as a recreational activity. The third step in the evolution is the concept that the modern high school library should be an intellectual library. Many schools have made progress in this present phase of library development. This survey was conducted to compare the physical aspects of libraries of small schools with those of …

A Survey Of The Extent Of Adult Homemaking Education In Vocationally Approved High Schools In South Dakota With Implications For Possible Expansion, Marlene Olson Westby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to learn the extent of adult homemaking education in vocationally approved high schools in South Dakota and to investigate opinions concerning possibilities for increasing the adult homemaking program. Analysis of the data from the returned questionnaires revealed that, while homemaking education for adults is available as a part of the vocational program in some high schools in South Dakota, in the majority of high schools, it is found to be entirely lacking. Of the 109 vocationally approved high schools investigated, 13 offered adult homemaking classes at some time during the three-year period. The majority, …

Major Differences In The Background Evaluation Of Top-Ranking And Bottom-Ranking Students Of English At South Dakota State College, Robert Edward Tembeck

This thesis specifically looks at the selected students’ …

The Effect Of Isometric Contraction And Calisthenic Exercises On Strength Development Of Male College Freshmen, Dennis L. Shefcyk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The lack of physical fitness of Americans is a problem of major concern to people throughout the United States. With the growing concern for the improvement of physical fitness, it is imperative that the physical educators know the best means of developing and maintaining physical fitness in our adults as well as the students. The American people are constantly looking for a quick and easy way of doing things and because of this physical educators must develop a concise and effective physical fitness program that will be brief and simple to administer. Most physiologists and physical educators agree that strength …

Economics Of Scale In Dairying: An Exploration Of Comparative Models Of Stanchion And Loose Housing Systems, Wayne J. Schulte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide South Dakota Dairy producers and others interested in establishing large scale dairy operations with a more complete set of guide lines that will help them to determine the profitableness of expanding existing or establishing new dairy producing units. It is hoped that many management problems, encountered by existing or previous “cow pools” can either be eliminated or greatly reduced in future large scale dairy operations. An average of the four surveyed 8-140 cow dairy herds and eight model dairy systems were analyzed in this study. The three objectives were to: (1) determine …

Comparison Of Theoretical, Laboratory And Field Discharge Ratings For A Closed Conduit Spillway, Fred A. Schmer Feb 1963

Comparison Of Theoretical, Laboratory And Field Discharge Ratings For A Closed Conduit Spillway, Fred A. Schmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Comparing theoretical and laboratory model discharge rating curves for a small discharge structure is relatively easy, but obtaining reliable field data on the prototype for additional comparison sometimes presents formidable problems. Generally, the construction and testing of a model and a corresponding prototype to obtain comparisons is not economically feasible. In this particular case, the reverse order of development was employed, and a model was constructed of an existing field structure. Data was obtained from both the laboratory and field studies and theoretical, laboratory, and field comparisons made. It was the desire of the author to substantiate criteria on which …

An Analysis Of Current Printing Programs At Southern Negro Universities And Colleges Granting The Bachelor Of Science Degree, By Ford Ratcliff Feb 1963

An Analysis Of Current Printing Programs At Southern Negro Universities And Colleges Granting The Bachelor Of Science Degree, By Ford Ratcliff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Constant evaluation is necessary to determine whether or not an education curriculum is serving the purpose for which it was designed. Curriculum construction is the result of the efforts of one man or a staff of men, usually based upon his or their experience in the field. Because of this fact, the resulting curriculum may be inadequate for the total development of the student in the area of his education. Little, if any, study has been made of Negro universities and colleges with reference to general curricula for printing programs found in such institutions. It is the purpose of this …

Farming Opportunities, Career Choices, And Educational Aspirations Of Farm Boys In South Dakota, Kenneth J. Ostroot Feb 1963

Farming Opportunities, Career Choices, And Educational Aspirations Of Farm Boys In South Dakota, Kenneth J. Ostroot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A drive through any part of South Dakota will reveal that many farmsteads are vacant. Empty farmsteads are evidence that farmers have quit farming. The agricultural census shows that the number of South Dakota farms is decreasing and the average size of farms is increasing. Farmers have found it profitable to increase the size of farm units, and they have been able to operate larger units by substituting capital for labor. AS a result, entry into farming is becoming more difficult as opportunities are fewer, capital required to enter has increased, and operations have become more specialized. Farm boys in …
