Development Of A Simulation Game In The Area Of Housing, Beverlee Olson Buenning
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on the development of a simulation game to teach certain aspects of housing. Underlying the development of the game was the assumption that a simulation game can be an effective teaching technique. The development of the game involved the use of a simulation design: objectives and generalizations for housing, questions that required decision-making, and designing a game board. More precise objectives were (1) to gain information about simulation gaming, particularly current research in the area of gaming in home economics, and (2) to develop a game for use in teaching specific behavioral objectives in the area of …
A Study Of Selected Objective Factors In College Basketball And Their Relationship To Team Success, Richard M. Dohrer
A Study Of Selected Objective Factors In College Basketball And Their Relationship To Team Success, Richard M. Dohrer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between selected components of basketball and winning. Winning was analyzed in three ways: by total points scored, point spread, i.e., difference in points between the losing and winning teams, and final won-loss percentage within the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. A secondary purpose of this study was to develop regression equations to predict total points scored, point spread, and final won-lost percentage on the basis of the correlations with the independent variables and the intercorrelations between the independent variables. 1. There is no significant statistical relationship between the selected …
The Probability Of A Basketball Rebounding In Specific Areas After A Missed Shot Is Taken From A Certain Area, James Egge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rebounding in basketball has always been of concern and importance to coaches at all levels of competition. The collection of data concerning on-the-court performance of basketball players has increased greatly during the past twelve years; however, only limited rebounding statistics have appeared in recent studies. Allsen concluded that shots attempted from the right side have a tendency to rebound to the middle and right side. On the other hand, when shots were attempted from the left side a greater percentage of missed shots rebounded to the right side or middle area of the court. In Allsen's study there was equal …

Relationship Between Pre-Meet Anxiety Level And Gymnastic Meet Performance In Women's Intercollegiate Gymnastics, Barbara Kae Langemo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Competing in athletics, by their very nature, subjects’ participants to many anxieties and stresses. Each person is an individual in the way he/she responds to certain stimuli and the responses are dependent upon social-background, personality, intelligence and emotional status. All of these factors intertwined dictate how an individual reacts to a variety of stimuli. Each competitor will differ in the degree of anxiety felt and the intensity may dictate how each will perform during competition. This one factor, anxiety, may explain why two individuals equal in skill level and physical ability perform so differently during competition in any given sport. …

Subjects for this study were 55 volunteers from the SDSU football team. The subjects were divided into four groups, three experimental and one control. Each group was assigned randomly an experimental set of drills selected from those frequently used by coaches. They conditioned six weeks, four times weekly, for fifteen minutes each day. The drill sequences were designated: Group A--quick drills and 10-second drills; Group B--wave drills; Group C--speed drills and sprints; and Group D was the control group. In addition to the drills administered to the three treatment groups, all four groups took part in weightlifting three days per …

News Diffusion Among South Dakota State University Students, Vadakkeveetil Alexander Thomas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study attempted to determine the pattern of news diffusion of Vice President Spiro Agnew's resignation October 10, 1973, among the students of South Dakota State University, Brookings. A questionnaire, which asked the 224 respondents the first source of information, the time of hearing the news, location of hearing the news, if they had told the news to anyone else after hearing it, and if they had sought further information from any source, is the basis for this study. The most important finding from this study …

The Norwegian Heritage In America: Rølvaag's Concern For A Pluralistic Society, Hazel L. Halvorson
The Norwegian Heritage In America: Rølvaag's Concern For A Pluralistic Society, Hazel L. Halvorson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ole Rølvaag has been acclaimed as an interpreter of the Norwegian immigrants, particularly those who settled on the Midwestern prairies. In his probing of the psychological side of pioneering, he added a new dimension to what Henry Cornmage!' calls the "two grand themes of American history"--immigration and the westward movement. The central purpose of Rølvaag’s life was two-pronged: the interpretation of his countrymen's experience in the New World and the preservation of Norwegian heritage in America. The latter cause he championed for two reasons: l) to help the immigrants make their adjustment to the new land, and 2) to enrich …

Income Expectations Among Adc Recipients In Rapid City, South Dakota : An Application Of Discriminant Analysis, Craig Edwards Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the present study the question of expectations of welfare recipients, specifically income expectations, is addressed. The general population chosen for examination are women and children receiving Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) payments. This general population is examined in an attempt to determine the specific factors contributing to positive or negative income expectations. These factors cover a wide range of socio-economic considerations, such as employment, receivable income, race, age of recipients~ the number of dependent children, and many other factors. The specific problem may be stated as follows: Does an identifiable, identical set of variables exist among unmarried ADC recipients …
Pathos And Its Paradox : The Vision Of J. M. Synge, William K. Schultz
Pathos And Its Paradox : The Vision Of J. M. Synge, William K. Schultz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For J. M. Synge what Francis Bickley calls the "hard light" of reality and the "passion" of imagination are combined in the character of the Irish peasant. As Bickley again observes, "in this people, as he saw it--and he had no sentimentality to mar his vision--the god and the beast were mixed in just proportions; corresponding to that juxtaposition of exaltation and brutality which figures in his theory of poetry." It is the poetic richness of Synge's language, too, that juxtaposes the potential of language and the potential of life. It is a rhythmic language that pulsates with the fullness …

A Multi-Variate Analysis Of Selected Socio-Demographic Factors Associated With The Attitudes Of Big Stone Lake Area Residents Toward Community Services, Oscar J. Schinkel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A research project was conducted in the Big Stone lake area. This area included Roberts and Grant Counties in South Dakota and the city of Ortonville in Minnesota. In 1969 a 2800 acre tract of land was purchased near Big Stone City, South Dakota by a consortium of three electric power companies. A 450 megawatt plant will be constructed on the site. The completion date is projected for the summer of 1975. This planned industrial facility for a relatively rural area provided an opportunity to study the effects of rural industrialization. This phase of the total research project ascertained the …
