Leaf and twig tissue were analyzed for contents of protein, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus and then subjected to statistical analysis. No difference was found between burning techniques. Protein and phosphorus increased and …

Sodium Bentonite, Sodium Bicarbonate And Limestone Supplementation In High-Concentrate Diets For Ruminants, Barry Howard Dunn Jan 1977

Sodium Bentonite, Sodium Bicarbonate And Limestone Supplementation In High-Concentrate Diets For Ruminants, Barry Howard Dunn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past several years, there has been increased interest in what has been referred to by some as the two-phase feeding of ruminants. This includes backgrounding, when animals are fed diets high in roughage during a growing period, followed by high-grain feeding during a relatively short finishing period. An interim period of grain adaptation, usually 2 to 3 weeks in length, is necessary in this feeding system to avoid the deleterious effects of the rumen acidosis associated with abrupt changes from predominantly roughage diets to high-grain diets. Feedlot performance during this adaptation phase is generally lower than desired. The …

Lysine-Energy Relationships In Corn-Soybean Meal Diets For Growing And Finishing Swine, James L. Girard Jan 1977

Lysine-Energy Relationships In Corn-Soybean Meal Diets For Growing And Finishing Swine, James L. Girard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing feed costs in recent years have led researcher and producers to look to different sources for their feedstuffs. Many by-products of various industries have been studied to determine their potential as livestock feeds. One product that has been used to spare feed grains in the diet by increasing the total dietary energy and increasing feed efficiency. The amino acid lysine represents another opportunity to decrease food costs of swine diets when protein supplementation is costly. Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most practical swine diets. The addition of lysine has proven effective in diets adequate in other …

In Vitro Analysis Of Pre- And Early Postimplantation Development Of Lethal Yellow (Ay/Ay) Mouse Embryos, Linda L. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dominant AY gene of the agouti locus (linkage group V) in the house mouse (Muse musculus) is one of approximately eleven alleles specifying coat color. Homozygosity of the AY allele is thought to cause death of the embryo in utero around the time of implantation. For this reason the AY/AY genotype is called the lethal yellow mouse. The precise time that the primary gene defect is first expressed is not known. Attempts to pinpoint the phenocritical period in an effort to discover the basic biochemical alteration specified by the lethal gene have thus far …

The Relationship Between Soil Test And Small Grain Response To P Fertilization In South Dakota Field Experiments, Paul Elias Fixen Jan 1977

The Relationship Between Soil Test And Small Grain Response To P Fertilization In South Dakota Field Experiments, Paul Elias Fixen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phosphorus is one of the two most limiting nutrients to crop production in South Dakota. Because of this fact, many recommendations for P fertilizer are made each day by the South Dakota State University Soil Test Lab. Nearly 65,000 tons of available O are marketed each year in South Dakota as commercial fertilizer. This amounts to over 18 million dollars or expense for South Dakota farmers. Therefore, it becomes essential that recommendations for phosphorus fertilizer be as accurate as our knowledge of the soil-plant system allows. Those recommendations are currently based on the results of the Modified Bray 1, 1:7 …

Inheritance Of Regrowth And Other Characters In Smooth Bromegrass, Geprge Lance Holborn Jan 1977

Inheritance Of Regrowth And Other Characters In Smooth Bromegrass, Geprge Lance Holborn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Land utilization is becoming increasingly important; farmers and ranchers are continually striving to produce more from production sites and to realize some production from their presently non-productive areas. Progress in this direction must be forthcoming in all areas of agriculture. In the case of cool-season grass species, growth takes place in the spring and fall of the year. With the exceptions of the cool-season grass species, orchardgrass, Dactylis glomerata L., little if any mid-summer growth is produced. Orchardgrass, however, is not winter-hardy or very productive under dryland conditions in South Dakota. Currently, there are no cool-season grass varieties recommended to …

The inclusion of opaque-2, double mutant …

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee Jan 1976

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The composition of cow's milk, including both the fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) content, is known to vary over rather broad ranges. Breed and individuality of the cow are the major factors influencing this, but many other factors are known to exert their influence. However, it has generally been observed that compensation or complementing occurs when the milk of cows is mixed together; so that the composition of milk from a herd will tend toward averages or norms. This effect usually is even more marked as the milk from two or more herds is commingled. Payment for milk on the basis …
