Social Distance Correlates: Religiosity, Education, And Personality, Jeanne C. Bigger Jan 1962

Social Distance Correlates: Religiosity, Education, And Personality, Jeanne C. Bigger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Equal access to social privileges for all men is a right that has been overtly defended in America, but a right which has not always been fully maintained in practice. Ethnicity has provided obstacles to harmonious intergroup relations when associated with prejudice. The church and the school have been expected to take the lead in combating intolerance, but investigations of the role of religiosity among prejudiced and tolerant subjects have raised a question as to the effectives of religious training. If the use made of religious belief is determined by the individual’s psychological needs, it may be that personality characteristics …

A Study Of Phosphate-Selenite Interrelationships Using Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mearl C. Mahl Jan 1962

A Study Of Phosphate-Selenite Interrelationships Using Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mearl C. Mahl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although much of the work concerning anion uptake by yeast has been done with cake yeast, the majority of the studies reported in this thesis were performed using a pure culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Two media are described which produce a sufficient number of yeast cells possessing good phosphate and selenite uptake properties. A study of the relative rates of the uptake of phosphate, selenite, selenate, and sulfate shows phosphate anions to be absorbed at a much faster rate than others. Thirty minutes after its addition, selenite appeared to be inhibitory to the cells. Selenate was also inhibitory to the …

The Flow Of Associated Press News Into South Dakota And Its Usage By Seven South Dakota Ap Dailies, Karl H. Friederich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Criticisms of the mass media are manifold. One that concerns this investigator is the criticism leveled against the quantity and quality of their content. These criticisms fall into the following general areas: (1) overemphasis on entertaining rather than on informing, (2) sensationalism rather than effective popularization, (3) insufficient interpretation and reluctance to exercise the opinion function, (4) lack of both quantity and quality in media content in smaller communities, and (5) bad taste and lack of social purpose in advertising, a criticism frequently extended to charges of cynical manipulation of consumer thought. The foundation of this study is the Associate …

Marked Chromosomes In Sorghum, Chester Chen-Chiu Huang Jan 1961

Marked Chromosomes In Sorghum, Chester Chen-Chiu Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As previously reported, true-breeding diploid mutant plants arise for colchicine treatment of sorghum seedlings of lines Experimental 1 and Experimental 3. It was hypothesized that such mutants may result from point mutations made homozygous by a somatic reduction of the chromosomes followed by doubling in a cell which organized a new growing point after inactivation of the original by colchicine. The first part of this study was an attempt to test this hypothesis by treating with colchicine sorghum seedlings containing a reciprocal translocation in the heterozygous condition which serves as a chromosome marker to indicate whether chromosomal homozygosity was induced. …

Factors Contributing To And Affecting The Cellulose Digestibility Of Pelleted Roughage, John Russell Jahn Feb 1960

Factors Contributing To And Affecting The Cellulose Digestibility Of Pelleted Roughage, John Russell Jahn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transition to the pelleting of natural feeding materials has produced many problems. Various opinions have been expressed by the investigators regarding possible solutions to these problems. The proper mechanical formation of the pellet or wafer has been studied by several investigators. Several necessary factors have been determined. The temperature ranges that will produce the best possible product, from a feeding standpoint, have been tested against various pressures. The fineness of grinding or chopping have also been considered, as they relate to the digestibility and economy of the finished product. Moisture and adhesive agents have been considered in determining what …

An Analysis Of Front Page News Pertaining To Juveniles In South Dakota Daily Newspapers For The First Three Months Of 1960 With Regard To Favorable And Unfavorable Content, Harlan S. Stensaas Jan 1960

An Analysis Of Front Page News Pertaining To Juveniles In South Dakota Daily Newspapers For The First Three Months Of 1960 With Regard To Favorable And Unfavorable Content, Harlan S. Stensaas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Newspapers have often been accused of emphasizing the sensational giving minimum attention to the non-violent or “good” news in which young people are involved. Evidence to support or to disprove such accusations has, however, been lacking. The accusations have evidently been made on a basis of casual, informal observation of the media and on the basis of public opinion polls. The teen age group, then, is in the public eye and the impression which the public gets is perhaps obtained largely through the mass media. The question which arises would be, “is the press fair in its presentation by Gilbert …

The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows Jan 1960

The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the period between 1940 and 1960 artificial insemination of dairy cows grew from the experimental stage to an extensive business enterprise in the United States. According to the Dairy herd Improvement Letter (Vol. 36, No. 3, A.R.S., U.S.D.A.) only 7,359 cows and heifers were artificially inseminated in 1939, but by 1959 this number had increased to 6,932,249. Along with the extended use of superior sires, a logical conclusion was that some attention should be directed toward increasing the use of good female germ plasm. If this could be accomplished, a more rapid improvement in the quality of dairy cattle …

Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla Jan 1960

Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct water through its macro-pores is known as its permeability. Permeability should not be confused with infiltration, which is the term for expressing the absorption of water into the soil. The infiltration rate is the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. The rate at which water moves through soil is called the hydraulic conductivity; whereas a measurement of this same rate is used to calculate the permeability. Hydraulic conductivity is most commonly expressed in the units of velocity, whereas permeability is expressed as the square of …

Ruminal Variation In Ph, Temperature, Bacterial Flora, And In Vitro Activity As Affected By Ration Change And Season, Norman Theodore Miller Jan 1960

Ruminal Variation In Ph, Temperature, Bacterial Flora, And In Vitro Activity As Affected By Ration Change And Season, Norman Theodore Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The outstanding importance of the vast member of microorganisms in the rumen to the nutritional physiology of the ruminant makes it imperative that the factors influencing the numbers and types of these organism be thoroughly understood. A knowledge of when these ruminal fluctuations occur and their causes, whether it be due to external environment or dietary change, would be of significant value in the preparation of rations which could stimulate the ruminal flora to their maximum efficiency and in turn receive maximum feed efficiency from the animal. The specific objectives of this project are as follows: to make periodic checks …

A Differential Medium For The Isolation And Cultivation Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus From Bovine Liver Abscesses, Charles Leslie Lamke Jan 1960

A Differential Medium For The Isolation And Cultivation Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus From Bovine Liver Abscesses, Charles Leslie Lamke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sphaerophorus necrophorus is of considerable economic importance since it is the cause of many pathological conditions in a wide variety of animals. One such condition is liver abscess of cattle. This one costs the packing industry several million dollars a year. Grant (15) suggested that a selective medium be devised for the isolation and cultivation of S. necrophorus. Becrens (2) has used a veal infusion medium containing brilliant green for the isolation of the organism. This medium does not inhibit the group D streptococcus and great care has to be used in making the medium. The difficulty of maintaining cell …

A Study Of Selected Factors Related To Level Of Living On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Joseph F. Powers Jan 1960

A Study Of Selected Factors Related To Level Of Living On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Joseph F. Powers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The eager spread of Western society with its insatiable desire for new lands and raw materials has brought with it an exposure to cultures often diametrically opposed to western concepts and attitudes. As contact with alien cultures was made, resistance to plans for “progress” was often experienced and the “primitive” peoples were judged to be irrational savages. The westward advance of our fore-father is written across the pages of history in the bold of the American Indians. “When our ancestors landed on this continent they first fell upon their knees and then upon the aborigines.” Needless to say, the Indian …

Studies On The Persistence Of Corynebacterium Insidiosum In Soil And Of An Antagonistic Variant Of The Species, Gordon Albert Nelson Jan 1960

Studies On The Persistence Of Corynebacterium Insidiosum In Soil And Of An Antagonistic Variant Of The Species, Gordon Albert Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies were conducted on the persistence in of Corynebacterium insidiosum, the alfalfa wilt bacterium, and on an antagonistic variant of that species. The persistence was followed by plate counting colonies from soils heavily inoculated with cells of this bacterium. The antagonistic variant of the species was studied directly and from cells or culture filtrates spot-planted on agar media containing seeding of other bacteria. Most cells of the wilt bacterium remained viable on glass surfaces for over 7 months at different temperatures, and in moist sterilized soil for over 72 days at room temperature. The calls persisted for only a few …
