Characterization Of Staphylococcus Species Isolated From Raw Milk With Special Reference To The Enterotoxigenic Coagulase-Positive Types, Adnan M. Ammouri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous reports from many parts of the world have described the occurrence of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning. Some studies have incriminated raw milk as a reservoir of the staphylococcus organisms as the vehicle of transmission. Recently Cheddar cheese has been implicated as the contaminating agent in food poisoning outbreaks traced to dairy products. The frequency of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning has stimulated interest in the characterization of members of the staphylococcus genus. The strains particularly important are those capable of production an enterotoxin. In order to determine the strains of staphylococcus organisms isolated from raw milk which are …

Anatomy And Bud Formation Of Subterranean Parts Of Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula L.), Charles A. Beasley Jan 1964

Anatomy And Bud Formation Of Subterranean Parts Of Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula L.), Charles A. Beasley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to obtain plant material for in vitro bud formation studies, many preliminary experiments involving germination and seedling growth were conducted. Anatomical studies were conducted to establish the identity of underground parts. Cyclic temperature changes from 20 0C and 30 0C (12 hours each) provided 97, 80, and 21% germination for mottled, grey, and purple seeds in 12 days. Mottled seeds require only 2 cycles of alternating temperature to approach or equal the germination percent obtained with 10 additional temperature alternations. Two cyclic temperature changes provided that one-fourth of the maximum germination percent of grey and purple seeds obtained …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Shrink-Resistant And Antibacterial Finishes On Wool Blankets After Repeated Launderings, Coila M. Janecek Jan 1964

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Shrink-Resistant And Antibacterial Finishes On Wool Blankets After Repeated Launderings, Coila M. Janecek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wool blankets are important to the economy of the state since South Dakota is one of ten leading states in wool production. Wool’s greatest competitor, synthetic fibers, has increased in production from 85.2 million pounds in 1949 to 470.5 million pounds in 1958, an increase of approximately 550 percent. This competition by synthetic fibers has resulted in the wool industry undertaking intensive re-search to develop finishes that would improve the quality of wool products. Results of South Dakota and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Stations research indicated that wool blankets ranked highest of all fiber types in warmth qualities, however, shrinkage in …

The 4-H program receives considerable attention in event attendance as well as in publicity all through the state 4-H contests held during the South Dakota State Fair. The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Microflora Of Raw Milk, Jaswant Singh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The proper handling of milk samples prior to bacterial analysis has been somewhat of a problem to dairy processors of South Dakota. There have been, and still are, many queries by these people about the treatment of o milk sample prior to the determination of a bacterial count. Should the milk samples be frozen prior to determining the number of bacteria? If it is feasible, what effect will the freezing have on the number of bacteria found? No tangible information about this problem has been found in the literature. Standard procedure emphasize mainly the icing of milk sample before analyzing …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to learn the extent of adult homemaking education in vocationally approved high schools in South Dakota and to investigate opinions concerning possibilities for increasing the adult homemaking program. Comparative Studies On The Effect Of Nitrogen Supplements On Nitrogen Fixation By Aerobacter Aerogene, Ramachandra B. Patil Feb 1963

Comparative Studies On The Effect Of Nitrogen Supplements On Nitrogen Fixation By Aerobacter Aerogene, Ramachandra B. Patil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect on nitrogen fixation of additions of washings and the dialysate derived from the Aerobacter aerogenes culture fixing nitrogen has been studied. The effects on nitrogen fixation of limited supplements of casein hydrolysate and ammonium acetate as sole sources of nitrogen and in combination have been compared. Data has been presented to show that addition of washings or the dialysate to the growth medium stimulates nitrogen fixation. Similarly, in the presence of casein hydrolysate, the starved and the nonstarved cells fixed nitrogen much earlier than the control cultures with no supplements of exogenous nitrogen. On the other hand, in …

A Study Of A Legume Weevil, Sitona Scissifrons Say, In South Dakota, Gale B. Mast

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

No previous literature was found pertaining to the economic damage to crops by the weevil, Sitona scissifrons Say. Dr. Robert J. Walstrom of the Entomology-Zoology Department at South Dakota State College found heavy damage on roots of alfalfa in artificially infested cages which was believed to have been caused by this weevil. Field observations had revealed that many alfalfa as well as clover roots lacked nitrogen nodules. The S. scissifrons species alone or in combination with other root feeding insects was suspected of affecting the productivity and longevity of alfalfa plants in South Dakota. Considerable leaf and bud feeding by …
