The Effectiveness Of The Tarmac Reading Program, Dan G. Wilder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Statement of the Problem. It was the problem of this study to determine if educationally-deprived students participating in the TARMAC Diagnostic-Prescriptive Reading Program would show significant differences in reading abilities compared with educationally-deprived students who were not participants in that program. Limitations of the Study. The following limitations were imposed upon the study: 1. Initial grade levels in reading in control and experimental groups were measured by California Achievement Test scores as criteria for defining educationally deprived. 2. The 1975-76 school year was used as the experimental period. 3. The results were limited to one school and forty student participants. …

A Comparison Of Two Smoking Reduction Treatments Under Conditions Designed To Be Interfering Or Not Interfering With The Smoking Habit., Gary Clive Salk 1944-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thirty smokers were solicited from the Wichita, Kansas community via the newspaper and broadcast media for a stop-smoking project. The volunteers were assigned to one of two treatments: double smoking or a modification of Von Dedenroth's (1964) treatment. Each of these treatments was further divided into two groups. These groups were designed to provide high and low interference with the smoker's habit. No effect was observed for interference and it was observed that the experimental conditions probably did not permit the possibility of more than a small interference effect in either group. However, a significant effect for time and time …

Human Problem Solving Of Two Applied Tasks In Economic Allocation, Jerry Alan Kackley

The objective of this paper is to examine in depth one aspect of human problem solving; specifically, to deal with a task environment familiar to the managerial practiocioner --- one of allocating scarece resources in an equitable and efficient manner toward the accomplishment of a defined goal. The central focus will be on measuring the problem solver’s relative efficiency and equitability in solving this allocation task using two different sets of data. To observe the problem solver’s thought processes, the “thinking aloud protocol” will be used. The use of protocols in discussed in Chapter 2. Of prime importance in the …

Automated Recognition Of Human Speech : A System Survey, A Problem Analysis, And A Frequency Shift Experiment, David Robin Scott
Automated Recognition Of Human Speech : A System Survey, A Problem Analysis, And A Frequency Shift Experiment, David Robin Scott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature and experimental research was conducted in order to accomplish several objectives. First of all, the establishment of a historical background of speech recognition efforts was desired. This background would reveal the various basic approaches taken in the past to recognize speech. In addition, the disadvantages and contributions of each system would be noted in order to recognize and analyze the problems inherent in recognizing speech. Secondly, an analysis of the major problems blocking automatic speech recognition was desired not only to investigate these problems, but also to evaluate the state of their solutions. Thirdly, an experiment was performed …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Statement of the problem. The central problem of this study was twofold: (1) to determine whether the educational research preparation offered by selected colleges and universities bore out the findings of critics, and (2) to synthesize and synergize opinions and facts regarding educational research, as expressed by men active in the field, into a flexible proposal whereby individual student's programs in research preparation could be "custom-made" to suit their most obvious research needs. Speech Training And Speech Activities In Institutions Of Higher Education In Taiwan, Chang Yuh-Sheng
Speech Training And Speech Activities In Institutions Of Higher Education In Taiwan, Chang Yuh-Sheng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An M.A. thesis in speech on the status of speech training in Taiwan, China, is proposed. From personal experience, this author has discovered some difficulties which Chinese students meet when they take up speech in American universities. The chief reason for this might be that the Chinese students who study speech in American universities and colleges have a somewhat limited knowledge of the speech areas and an. inadequate background of speech training. Since speech courses are elective in most of the universities in Taiwan, the students' interest in participating in speech activities, such as speech contest and ·dramatic performance, has …

An Analysis Of Three Approaches To Grammar With Recommendations For A Multiphasal Grammar, Rose Marsha Kessler
An Analysis Of Three Approaches To Grammar With Recommendations For A Multiphasal Grammar, Rose Marsha Kessler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today the teacher is confronted with three approaches to the teaching of grammar, all of which contain useful concepts; it is the major contention of this study that the best of each of these approaches may be the desired choice. It is the intention of this paper to propose a multiphasal grammar and to show that such a grammar seems to be the ultimate direction for the teaching of the English language. This multiphasal grammar will combine the best of the three approaches: the most useful and logical elements of traditional nomenclature; the structuralists' emphasis on the sound of language, …
Freedom In Heidegger., John Duffy Trager 1937-
Freedom In Heidegger., John Duffy Trager 1937-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis represents an investigation into the meaning and development of freedom in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Part I deals primarily with Sein und Zeit. Dasein, human reality, is defined both as a finite, thrown being-in-the-world and as a free entity, projecting its possibilities. Dasein achieves authenticity in the renunciation of the crowd and by embracing its ultimate possibility--death. The conclusion to Part I argues for the identity, in Heidegger's thought, of finite freedom and temporality. Part II deals with Gelassenheit, a work of Heidegger's latter period. Freedom is expressed in a new vocabulary. Man must release himself but …
