Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin Jun 1956

Culture And Conflict In Israel., Hannah Scoggin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Times Square went mad with noise and excitement, and a small freighter slipped from its Brooklyn berth into the drama of the night. It was December 31, 1949--midnight-January 1, 1950; and I was on my way to the world in general and Israel and the Near East in particular. To say the words Near East, to hear them spoken, to read the combination of Latin letters, even to think them fleetingly can conjure up for me a haze of incense-tinged dreams in which I see exotic sights, breathe pungent odours, and hear mysterious sounds. The Near East is all this …

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis May 1956

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nearly all Old Testament theological works include large sections on the nature of men. While these works discuss meanings and usages of such important terms as "body," "soul," and "spirit," they devote very little space to the term "heart." This neglect leaves the impression that the Old Testament has only a passing interest in the part of man's nature which is revealed under the term "heart." Lexical and critical studies also minimize the importance of the term "heart." Franz Delitzsch has the most notable works in the theological field of the Old Testament on the study of the "heart." The …

A Study Of Vocational Choices And Preferences Of Freshmen Male Students At State College In Terms Of Their Abilities And Scholastic Achievement In College, Robert G. Christianson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The writer in this problem is deeply concerned with those high school students who are preparing themselves for the future and are going to college. Naturally colleges as well as students and their parents are interested in factors which make for success in college. Several of these are well known, such as, general mental ability, keen interest in college work, good study habits, regular attention to college tasks and definite vocational choice. The last of these mentioned, definite vocational choice has been subjected to less research than any of the others. This study has as its objective to determine if …

The Fench Writers In The Seventeenth Century: The Literary Works Of Corneille Converted And Stabilized The French Language, Bernard Raphael

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932, argues that the literary work of Pierre Corneille converted and stabilized the French language during the seventeenth century. It surveys the major literary institutions and figures shaping French letters during this period, including the Salon de Rambouillet and its role in refining literary taste, and the founding of the French Academy under Richelieu and its work compiling the French dictionary. Corneille's development of French classical tragedy is examined in detail, particularly through "Le Cid," with attention to his treatment of the …

Word-Play In Shakespeare., Mary E. Burton Jan 1925

Word-Play In Shakespeare., Mary E. Burton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A careful perusal of Shakespeare’s works leads to one outstanding conclusion. Shakespeare was preeminently interested in words, as such. His every play shows a painstaking attention to words in their various shades of meaning. It is our interest to present some definite proof of this extraordinary emphasis on words, and to attempt in a small way to explain the reason for this particular trait of Shakespeare’s. Certainly as skillful a playwright as he would not have included so many carefully planned word-plays in his dramas if the audience of the time were not interested in the language itself as well …
