The purpose of the current study is to determine the persuasive techniques involved in the TV advertisements currently broadcast in the United States and Japan and the relationships of these techniques to cultural factors. This study is intended as a contrastive analysis of selected aspects of the phonological systems of English and Korean. Contrastive analysis is basically the manner in which most foreign language courses are taught. The field of contrastive linguistics has recently split into three areas: traditional contrastive analysis, error analysis, and interlanguage. Willa Sylbert Cather was born in December 7, 1873, in Winchester, Virginia, and Pearl Sydenstricker Buck was born in Hillsboro in the adjoining state of West Virginia nearly nineteen years later, on June 26, 1892. When they were sensitive young girls, both of them were exposed to "foreign” cultures, which were quite different from their original Victorian cultures of the East. Willa and her family moved to the Nebraska frontier when Willa was eight years old. A Study Comparing The Self-Concept Scores Between Anglo And Chicano Children In The Canutillo, Texas School District, Glen M. Kraig

The problem of this study was to determine if differences exist in the self-concept scores between Anglo children and Chicano children. A secondary problem was to determine the level of correlation between self concept scores and academic averages. The Martinek-Zaichkowsky Self Concept Scale for Children was used to determine self concept scores and grade point averages reported by the students' classroom teachers were used for the academic averages. The findings of the study warranted the following conclusions: (1) Anglo, first grade children have a significantly higher total self concept than do Chicano, first grade children. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationships among Piagetian levels of cognitive development, linguistic skills, and reading achievement in elementary pupils. The subjects were 212 pupils in grades K-3 at a school in Sullivan County, Tennessee. The subjects were administered conservation tests of number, quantity of matter, and length and linguistic tests of syllabication, synthesis of phonemes into words, and analysis of words into phonemes by the researcher. Scores on pre-reading skills from the reading subtests of the Metropolitan Readiness Tests and scores on meaning vocabulary, reading comprehension, and word study skills from the Stanford Achievement Test …

In the late nineteenth century, diverse social and economic conditions in Europe caused immigration to America. The European experiences of these pioneers continued to influence their reactions against the pressure to assimilate into a Midwestern culture. Of the German people who settled in the Dakotas, the German Russians, particularly those who homesteaded in the Eureka, South Dakota area, formed one of the most culturally cohesive communities. When two major railroad companies were recruiting settlers for the Eureka area, the Germans from Russia were looking for an escape from the increasing pressure to blend into Russian society. The problem of this study was to determine if achievement scores in reading and language arts could be increased for students who participated in the newspapers in education program. Ninety-three seventh grade students were selected for the study; seventy-seven students completed the study, sixteen students were lost due to attrition. Two experimental groups and one control group were selected by random assignment from the seventh grade class at one school. The Metropolitan Achievement Test was administered to all students as a pretest. The freshmen at South Dakota State University are primarily students who have lived their entire lives in small agricultural communities. They are neither stupid nor unintelligent but merely inexperienced in writing formal exposition. Many of them come from towns with populations under one-thousand and high school graduating classes of twenty-five to fifty. Their primary means of communication (up until they enrolled in college) was through speech. Because they rarely write, they feel very uncomfortable about learning to write effectively. The purpose of the study was to (1) compare the performance on left and right hemisphere processing tasks of male and female kindergarten students from three instructional approaches, and (2) to determine the effectiveness of an educational application: the use of "hands-on" inquiry-oriented science activities designed to engage the right hemisphere in improving left and right hemisphere processing. Subjects included 79 students enrolled in intact kindergarten classes representative of three instructional approaches: (1) the Traditional-Conventional Instructional Approach, (2) the Montessori Approach, and (3) the Open Activity-Centered Instructional Approach.
