What's Next? The Intersection Of Politics And Marketing: A Look At Its Impact On Shareholder Wealth, Ashley Morgan
What's Next? The Intersection Of Politics And Marketing: A Look At Its Impact On Shareholder Wealth, Ashley Morgan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The first essay attempts to explain the heterogeneity in the stock market’s reaction to a firm’s lobbying for good efforts. It is hypothesized that higher (a) CEO equity-to-pay ratio, (b) marketing influence in the TMT, (c) marketing capabilities, (d) corporate social performance, and (e) institutional ownership, will be associated with less negative abnormal stock returns. Results indicate that firms with a greater amount of marketing influence in the top management team experience greater negative abnormal returns. While firms with a higher CEO equity-to-pay ratio and a greater level of institutional ownership experience less negative abnormal returns. The second essay explores …

Integrated Psychological Services In Pediatric Primary Care: A Program Evaluation, Kristen Laprade Johnson
Integrated Psychological Services In Pediatric Primary Care: A Program Evaluation, Kristen Laprade Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many children and youth experience emotional and/or behavioral health difficulties and lack appropriate access to care. Access to care limitations are particularly relevant to rural populations such as Mississippi. Integrated care models could serve as an innovative solution to increasing access to care for children and youth. In particular, the Three World View model of integrated care asserts that attention should be given to the clinical world (i.e., provision of evidence based services), operational world (i.e., charting, scheduling, referrals, etc.), and the financial world (i.e., funding and reimbursement). The current study utilized program evaluation tools to develop and evaluate a …
Behavioral Chronopharmacology Of Cannabinoids In Young And Aged Mice, Erik Lewis Hodges
Behavioral Chronopharmacology Of Cannabinoids In Young And Aged Mice, Erik Lewis Hodges
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The overarching goal of this research is to explore the biological mechanisms of aging and formulate novel therapeutic approaches to mitigate age-related impairments. The presence and pervasiveness of ~24 hour (circadian) rhythms in molecular and behavioral dynamics suggests that the mechanisms regulating these rhythms are integral to biological aging and possibly amenable to therapeutic interventions. Based on evidence presented in this dissertation, we conclude that the endocannabinoid system is a mediator of both central and peripheral circadian physiology. Additionally, the hormetic pharmacological properties of the synthetic cannabinoid CP55940 suggest that bidirectional modulation of circadian rhythms via cannabinoids is possible. Chapter …

Novel Ophthalmic Formulations For Improved Natamycin Delivery In Fungal Infections Of The Eye., Akash Vijay Patil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Natamycin (NT) is a front-line drug in the management of ocular fungal infections (OFI). An ophthalmic marketed NT suspension (Natacyn®) is currently the only FDA approved medication prescribed in the pharmacotherapy of OFI. Current NT pharmacotherapy requires frequent topical administration (every hour or 2-hours over 6-8 times in a day) due to it being instilled as eye-drops. This leads to higher precorneal losses and subsequent poor permeation and bioavailability. Therefore, in this research study, alternative ocular formulations of NT were investigated with an intent to improve precorneal retention and corneal permeation in comparison to Natacyn®. Chapter 1 discusses various aspects …

Post-Soul Speculation: An Exploration Of Afro-Southern Speculative Fiction, Hilary Word
Post-Soul Speculation: An Exploration Of Afro-Southern Speculative Fiction, Hilary Word
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT This thesis is an examination of female authored, post-soul, Afro-Southern speculative fiction. The specific texts being examined are My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due, Stigmata by Phyllis Alesia Perry, and Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. Through exploration of these texts, I posit two large arguments. First, I posit that this thesis as a collective work illustrates how women-authored Afro-Southern speculative fiction based in the post-soul era embodies and champions womanist politics and praxis critical for liberation through speculative elements. Second, I assert that this thesis is demonstrative of how this particular type of fiction showcases the importance …

Learning Community Impact On Low-Socioeconomic Student Success In A 4-Year Public University, April Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Low-socioeconomic students often persist and graduate from institutions of higher education at lower rates than middle and upper-socioeconomic students. Learning communities are one proactive program established in higher education to support first-year students in their academic and social acclimation into college. However, learning community literature tends to focus on the success of the participant population as a whole. This study sought to contribute to existing learning community literature and low-socioeconomic student literature by measuring learning community impact on low-socioeconomic student academic success in terms of GPA, same-institution retention, and same-institution degree completion within six years. This quantitative study measured GPA, …
Contraband Camps And The Freedmen's Bureau During The Civil War And Reconstruction, Kristin Bouldin
Contraband Camps And The Freedmen's Bureau During The Civil War And Reconstruction, Kristin Bouldin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation discusses the connections between policies developed in the contraband camps and the policies enacted by the Freedmen’s Bureau during Reconstruction. It argues that that contraband camp policies created several models for Bureau agents to follow, and that Bureau agents failed to learn from the problematic contraband camps and enacted policies and programs that had already failed in the camps. In addition, it argues that the federal government failed to provide effective oversight for the camps, which alloindividual camp commanders to institute policies that often undermined the ability of the contrabands to gain economic autonomy, and that poor oversight …

Carceral Matrix: Black Women's Writing In Response To Mass Incarceration, 1963-2019, Allison Michelle Serraes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation broadens the definition of confinement literature, a critical and developing subfield in African American literary studies. It argues that contemporary Black women writers are the early theorists of the complex and insidious reach of the U.S. prison-industrial complex. Through their probing representations of Black female characters’ interactions with state-sanctioned social control and patriarchal violence, Gayl Jones, Alice Walker, Suzan-Lori Parks, and DaMaris B. Hill expand critical understandings of confinement and imprisonment. This dissertation contends that these writers’ depictions of sexual and reproductive control as part of the developing carceral state reveal how confinement and imprisonment operate on intersecting …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background
Milk allergy is the most common childhood allergy. Reading food labels is important to prevent an allergic reaction. By United Kingdom (UK) law, milk needs to be listed on the food label if it used as an ingredient. Products can be called ‘free from’ milk if manufacturers have undergone rigorous process and testing to ensure it is not contaminated with milk. Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) like ‘may contain milk’ statements are unregulated and can be used at manufacturer’s discretion. Similarly, ‘Vegan’ products are not regulated by law and appear to be on the increase. Objective
