The Effect Of Ultra-Violet Light Upon The Growth Of Zea Maize., W. H. Clashman Jan 1930

The Effect Of Ultra-Violet Light Upon The Growth Of Zea Maize., W. H. Clashman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many experiments have been performed to determine the effect of ultra-violet light upon the growth of plants and animals. The conclusions reached by the experiments concerned are not constant in all cases. The more significant of these studies are here reviewed. Sheard and Johnson (17) state that the skin is the medium which separates the organism, whether it be plant or animal, from its environment. The skin is, therefore, the medium of reception of radiant energy and the seat of transformation or utilization of the incident energy. No changes of a physical or chemical character are produced in the cells, …

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads Jan 1929

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before entering upon a discussion of those writers of the Elizabethan Age whose works present specific instances of Personal Retractation, let us turn our attention to the problem in general and try to find out why writers of this age and of earlier times felt it necessary to repent of their literary efforts. Some critics may say that retractation was merely a literary convention; and why bother about its beginnings, sources, et cetera? Others may have the opinion that it was a personal trait, only a means of satisfying some peculiar whim or fancy of the author. Some may go …

Truancy In The Public Schools : Its Cause And Cure., Kathleen Miller Jan 1929

Truancy In The Public Schools : Its Cause And Cure., Kathleen Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this age in which we live it is not hard to find a problem but it is often difficult to choose one. These problems have arisen as a result of the complex social and industrial institutions which have evolved as a result of human inventiveness and the competition among men to better our living conditions and increase our comforts. According to statistics compiled by the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the proportion of those who enjoy these modern conveniences is small when compared to those who have suffered as a result. The problem of this study is one which …

Sketches Of Robert Browning's Women., Mame Morris Boulware Jan 1929

Sketches Of Robert Browning's Women., Mame Morris Boulware

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

No other poet has given to the world such a diversity of woman characters as has Robert Browning. Longing for variety he represents his womanhood, not in classes but by individual differentiation; he portrays the simple, the complex, the subtle, the particular, the impulsive and others--each distinct from the rest. Browning emphasizes natural charms less than intellectual and moral loveliness. He strives to depict women as they are in themselves. By suggestions of spiritual nature, by delicate workmanship, he sets his feminine character before us. With dexterous versatility he creates type after type, each a character in herself. Two of …

The Education Of The Natural Man : A Study In The Political Philosophy Of J. J. Rousseau., Esther E. Mason Jan 1927

The Education Of The Natural Man : A Study In The Political Philosophy Of J. J. Rousseau., Esther E. Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In these, the opening words of Emile, Rousseau admits us to a knowledge of one of the principles of his thought. Everything is good, he thinks, as it comes from the hand of God. It becomes bad through the interference of man with the work of nature. We might assume, then, that the interference is bad, and that man was better, more virtuous, before he was interfered with, or educated. And as a matter of fact, Rousseau found some such answer to the problem when it first presented itself to him. In Emile he finds another and more practical solution, …

A Study Of Atropa Belladonna, (Linne) Grown In South Dakota, Floyd J. Leblanc Jan 1927

A Study Of Atropa Belladonna, (Linne) Grown In South Dakota, Floyd J. Leblanc

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The economic importance of Atropa Belladonna has long been recognized because of the valuable alkaloids which it contains. Belladonna belongs to the Solanaceae or Nightshade family, which is composed of about 1500 species, many of these also being of economic importance. At the academy of Agriculture in Klansenburg since 1916, two constant deviations from the normal variety of Atropa Belladonna L. have been grown. They are Atropa Belladonna var. flava and Atropa Belladonna var. intermediata. The alkaloidal content is higher than that of the normal variety. Belladonna, grown in other parts of the country, undoubtedly has been thoroughly studied in …

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning Jan 1926

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reconstruction began in Kentucky somewhat sooner than in the States south of the Blue Grass Commonwealth. As soon as the invading Confederate army withdrew from the State in 1862, loyal Kentuckians began to prepare for peaceful pursuits and to restore the State, as best they could, to somewhat the position it occupied before the war between the states. Of course it was impossible to remake the State as it was before the struggle, but at least the civil authority could be restored, and the State prepared for the reign of peace. The dates 1862 to 1870 have been selected as …

Sir Richard Steele, Reformer., H. Carter Davidson Jan 1926

Sir Richard Steele, Reformer., H. Carter Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because the critics of the eighteenth century admired form more than thought, Sir Richard Steele has been sadly neglected and all honours have been heaped upon his literary partner, Joseph Addison. Slowly the readers of the twentieth century are beginning to realize that Steele had all the originality, while Addison had nothing but polish. It is to present a few of the astoundingly original and influential ideas of Steele that this paper has been written. To the best of my knowledge after some extended search, the reforms of Richard Steele have not been treated, at least not in the manner …

The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan Jan 1926

The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much work has been done in the past on the nutritional value in young life of different dairy products, all of which experiments have been carried to successful completion by various men at different times. There is, however, no published information demonstrating the comparative values resulting from experimental work in the nutritional value of ice cream as a supplementary diet in infant life. For the purpose of the following experiments, the albino rat, (Mus Norvegicus Albinus) and the Norway rat, (Mus Nor vegicus), together with Guinea Pigs and cats were used. It is a well-known fact that rats exhibit the …

John Donne The Preacher., Dick Houston Hall Jan 1925

John Donne The Preacher., Dick Houston Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the year 1573 when Shakespeare and Marlowe were already boys of nine, Chapman in adolescence, Spenser, Lyly and Richard Hooker men of twenty, John Donne, then important to only a few but destined to the company of royalty, was born. Walton says, in his very excellent but inadequate and often inaccurate “Lives of Dr. John Donne, etc.,” that his father as descended “from an ancient and worth family in Wales.” Gosse, however, calls this simply “a pious wish” because nothing is known of his father’s parentage. He was prosperous iron merchant of London, who died in 1576 leaving his …

The Influence Of The Diet Of The Cow And The Effect Of Heat Upon The Antiscorbutic Potency Of Milk, Lynn Copeland Jan 1923

The Influence Of The Diet Of The Cow And The Effect Of Heat Upon The Antiscorbutic Potency Of Milk, Lynn Copeland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inroduction: For a long time there has been a belief among scientific investigators and medical men that certain diseases, both of man and animal were the direct result of a faulty diet. In other words, something which was needed by the body for maintenance of growth and health was thought to be frequently lacking in the diet of man and animal. Attention was first called to these accessory substances thru investigations into the cause of the disease beri-beri. In 1884, the Japanese Navy, under the direction of Admiral Takaki, positively demonstrated that beri-beri was the result of a faulty diet, …

A History Of Ohio River Trade At Louisville From Its Beginning Until 1840., John Edward Heller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dominant theme in the study of any phase of Ohio River history is found in the great extent of the river system and the vast area of the drainage basin of the Mississippi to which this stream forms so important a part. The basin of the Mississippi, as has been aptly said, is the "Body of the Nation," all other parts of the nation being but members, important in themselves, yet more important in their relation to this.(1) In extent it is the second great valley of the world, being exceeded only by that of the Amazon.(2) In a …

The Effect Of Condensed, Dry, And Fresh Milk In The Diet Of Albino Rats., John T. Walsh May 1922

The Effect Of Condensed, Dry, And Fresh Milk In The Diet Of Albino Rats., John T. Walsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although much work has been done in determining the nutritional values of different milks, all of it has been carried on at different times by various men, and there is no published data demonstrating the relative values derived from experiments which were carried on simultaneously and in which all subjects were under the same conditions. It is well known that rats show the effect of conditions to which they are subjected very easily and respond to them in the same manner in which man does. They are therefore a fit subject for nutritional experimentation. The Albino rat lives three years …

A Study In Professional Ethics., Lewis William Dockery May 1922

A Study In Professional Ethics., Lewis William Dockery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Professional ethics does not differ in its essential nature from general ethics; both are concerned with problems of human conduct. The difference between the two is a difference of scope but not of nature. The scope of general ethics is as broad as the purposive acts of rational persons, while the scope of professional ethics is limited to the purposive acts of lawyers, physicians, teachers, clergymen, and other professional persons. The former includes all normal persons irrespective of their vocations; the latter includes only persons who are in professional life. Professional ethics takes the field of general ethics for granted; …

History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden May 1921

History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the one hundred and forty years of Louisville's existence, it has grown from a log cabin settlement with no churches to a city with 269 churches and church property valued at over $30,000,000. It is impossible to measure the moral and religious force that they have exerted on the city. It can best be appreciated when one thinks of what the city would be without them. Few of us would care to live in such a city. In the field of education, Louisville churches have contributed much. Some of the first schools in the city were conducted by ministers, …

Sympathy And System In Giving., Elwood Street May 1921

Sympathy And System In Giving., Elwood Street

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A quarter of a century ago, Abraham Epworth Rounds, aged forty-five, came shambling out of mountainous Eastern Tennessee to one of our Kentucky cities. He was intent on making a living in easier fashion than scratching it from the lean soil of the mountainside. Among his immediate relatives were nineteen people, defective from birth – blind, deaf, feeble-minded. Abraham Epworth Rounds ran true to the family form. His vision was so defective that he had been given a few years of schooling at the Tennessee School for the Blind. In Louisville, at first, he made a precarious living for himself …

Some Aspects Of Madison Cawein's Poetry., Julia C. King Jun 1916

Some Aspects Of Madison Cawein's Poetry., Julia C. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After a careful study of Madison Cawein's poetry, and comparing his views on religion and philosophy with those of some of the great English poets, Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron, Tennyson and Browning, I shall summarize them as follows, and treat each subject by comparison with these writers and with selections from his and their poems, substantiating these statements: 1. Cawein's conception of God is That God is the Fountain of all Mind, Beauty, Truth and Love. 2. His Poetry Embodies the Idea of Pantheism. 3. His Poetry Teaches the Evolution of the Soul. 4. His Poetry Expressed the Platonic Philosophy of …

Some Phases Of Our Modern Industrial Problem., James Asa White 1886-1953 May 1914

Some Phases Of Our Modern Industrial Problem., James Asa White 1886-1953

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The original intention of this dissertation was to have been a brief treatment of some phases of our modern industrial problem. Later, however, it was decided to offer suggestions for solutions to these various problems. This I have attempted to do in the form of appendices. The greater emphasis will be given to the side of the laboring man in relation to his environment, his fellow-worker, and organized capital, rather than to organized industries as such. It is very evident from the great unrest now apparent in the laboring world, that something is radically wrong with the present system of …

Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee May 1912

Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Having been born and brought up in China, an empire, where the people are utterly ignorant of the vital importance of a good system of public water supply, and having decided to take chemistry as my profession, I feel intensely interested in the examination of water for the purpose of convincing our people in the far east to pay proper attention to sanitation on a chemical basis. The average life period there has been roughly estimated to be thirty years, and we have now in the Middle Kingdom a population of 450,000,000. It means in each century we have approximately …
