A Comparative Analysis Of Performance Of College Women On The Kraus-Weber Test And The Aahper Test, Sharon Ann Mundt Jan 1961

A Comparative Analysis Of Performance Of College Women On The Kraus-Weber Test And The Aahper Test, Sharon Ann Mundt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

America has become more cognizant of the need for physical fitness through the Kraus-Weber Test of Minimum Muscular Fitness and the Youth Fitness Program instigated by President Eisenhower in 1956. The low level of physical fitness in the United States has been attributed largely to the high degree of mechanization. Labor saving devices have decreased the natural physical activity, leading to little physical stamina development by day to day living. The rapidly changing mode of American living has left its imprint on the physical fitness of American youth. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the Kraus-Weber …

The Technical Abilities And Manipulative Skills Which Should Be Taught In A High School Vocational Agriculture Farm Mechanics Program In South Dakota, Charles O. Stormo Jan 1961

The Technical Abilities And Manipulative Skills Which Should Be Taught In A High School Vocational Agriculture Farm Mechanics Program In South Dakota, Charles O. Stormo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The typical high school vocational agriculture teacher experiences a lack of time necessary to teach all of the technical abilities and manipulative skills that have become a part of the farm mechanics program. He may spend time teaching outdated abilities when his time could be more profitability used in teaching the abilities that are required in modern mechanized farming. Perhaps some time should also be applied to anticipating and developing those abilities required to do jobs which are now commonly referred to specialists but may be required of the student when he becomes established in farming several years hence. An …

Responses Of Experimental 3, A Sorghum Variety, To Gamma Radiation And Colchicine, Hubert Dennis Haensel Jan 1961

Responses Of Experimental 3, A Sorghum Variety, To Gamma Radiation And Colchicine, Hubert Dennis Haensel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diploid mutant shoots having the characteristics of inbreds have arisen from colchicine-tumors induced on highly inbred varieties of Sorgum vulgare Pers. To produce C-tumors, colchicine-in-lanolin was applied to the coleoptiles just emerging from the seed coat during germination. If the occurrence of somatic reduction were preceded by mutation and followed by restoration to the diploid number, a resulting homozygous, diploid mutant cell in an advantageous position, competitively and/or spatially, could assume leadership in the apex of the growing point of the shoot. According to this hypothesis, chromosomal markets heterozygous in plant embryos preliminary to colchicine treatment would be homozygous in …

Variations In Motor Fitness Resulting From Calisthenic Exercises, Donald R. Hilsendager Jan 1960

Variations In Motor Fitness Resulting From Calisthenic Exercises, Donald R. Hilsendager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Motor fitness development of high school students by the use of various physical activities has been of major interest to physical educators for many years and has received national interest in recent years. Ray Weiss reported 13 Unites States army officers present at the Third Annual Physical Fitness Institute expressed grave concern regarding our schools’ responsibilities in fitness. Carl A. Troeater Jr. had this to say about the present day felt need for fitness: “Few educators need to be convinced of the importance of fitness in our youth. For the past ten years, a deluge of newspaper and magazine articles …

Strength And Physical Fitness Of Rural Versus Urban Boys As Determined By The Rogers Physical Fitness Index, James L. Welton Jan 1960

Strength And Physical Fitness Of Rural Versus Urban Boys As Determined By The Rogers Physical Fitness Index, James L. Welton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The farm family has been recognized by many as a hardy lot who could endure a hard life and strenuou8s labor. On the other hand, city people have thought of as being weaker because of a life less demanding. In the past it has been accepted generally that the rural boy was superior to the urban boy in over-all physical strength. The rural boy has been stereotyped as a big, muscular individual with a strong back and weak mind. The town boy, on the other hand, has seldom been considered as an exceptionally strong individual. Throughout the years the farm …

A Study Of Seventh Grade Problems Compiled Into A Check List, Catherine Thurston Jan 1960

A Study Of Seventh Grade Problems Compiled Into A Check List, Catherine Thurston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transaction from the sixth to the seventh grade for the early adolescent has been a long recognized problem. Various schools have tried different methods to make it smooth and more pleasant since this is a critical period physically, emotionally, and socially because of the changes taking place within the individual. The curriculum has been changed and shaped around the needs of the early adolescent. Recent courses in guidance and years of experience in teaching have pointed out the fact clearly that the early adolescence has many concealed problems with which they are wrestling, and from which they seek relief. …

Changes In Cardiovascular Condition Resulting From An Eight Week Training Program As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Merle L. Foss Jan 1960

Changes In Cardiovascular Condition Resulting From An Eight Week Training Program As Shown By The Cameron Heartometer, Merle L. Foss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect of different activities and conditioning exercises on the cardiovascular system has been the basis for many recent studies by physical educators and physiologists. No doubt much of this research has been prompted by statements such as that by Reidman, “An athlete is only as good as his heart.” Reidman reasoned that the ability of the athlete to perform work was dependent in large measure on the ability of the heart to supply oxygen to the muscles. This, in turn, was dependent upon two factors: (1) the capacity of exertion, and (2) the ability of the heart to return …

The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows Jan 1960

The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the period between 1940 and 1960 artificial insemination of dairy cows grew from the experimental stage to an extensive business enterprise in the United States. According to the Dairy herd Improvement Letter (Vol. 36, No. 3, A.R.S., U.S.D.A.) only 7,359 cows and heifers were artificially inseminated in 1939, but by 1959 this number had increased to 6,932,249. Along with the extended use of superior sires, a logical conclusion was that some attention should be directed toward increasing the use of good female germ plasm. If this could be accomplished, a more rapid improvement in the quality of dairy cattle …

A Comparative Analysis Of Performance By The Madelia Public School Students On The Kraus-Weber Test And The Aahper Fitness Test, Donald Ray Nehowig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical fitness has always been an important part of an athletic program, and it has always been highly regarded for our servicemen during war years. But people who were concerned with our overall fitness brought out the fact that this fitness decreases markedly after an athletic season and after a war. This report by Dr. Kraus attired our nation’s leaders to such an extent that President Eisenhower created a council on Youth Fitness and had numerous meetings to discuss the fitness problem and how it could be improved. The American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation joined in the …

The Relationship Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of Residents Of Homes For Aged In Eastern South Dakota, Darlien G. Klug Jan 1960

The Relationship Of Selected Factors To The Personal Adjustment Of Residents Of Homes For Aged In Eastern South Dakota, Darlien G. Klug

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To say that the problems of aging are universal, touching all of all culture at one time or another, appears to be something of a truism. Yet, short of birth and death, scarcely any part of the pattern of living affects all mankind to so great degree. With added years come decrease in physical vigor, declining health, and increased imminence of death- all conditions to which the aging must adjust. In American society these problems are particularly acute, largely because of the predominantly urban and industrial character of our culture. In South Dakota, particularly, growing numbers of elder citizens give …

A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood Jan 1960

A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term “selective matings” implies the selection of a sire to breed to each female on an individual, rather than a group or herd basis. Mating systems, other than random mating, may be classed either as the mating of like to like or as the mating of unlikes. This likeness or unlikeness may be based either on blood relationship or on individual appearance. The advantage and limitations of each mating system have been well worked out on a theoretical basis, and some of system have been thoroughly tested by experimentation and in the field. In actual practice many breeders use …

Study Of Dietaries And Nutritional Status Of Adolescent Indian Girls In Boarding Schools Of The Dakotas, Margaret I. Talcott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The adolescent period is recognized as a crucial one in the development of individuals. This study is centered on the nutritional status of girls who are in this stage of development. Cooperative regional studies by experiment stations and school lunch studies in several states have covered many phases of nutritional status for various population groups in recent years. Investigators agrees that there is need for further information in regard to the dietary practices and nutritional status of adolescents, and there appears to be the greatest concern with respect to adolescent girls. The average annual birth rate for Indians in the …
